Make an animated photo for Instagram

In this tutorial, we will use Adobe Photoshop to create animated photos for Instagram.

Part 1. How to prepare a document

Step 1

Use the Ctrl + N command to create a new document with the following settings: 1080×1080 pixels; resolution (Resolution) – 300 ppi.

Step 2

Go to menu File> Place Embedded (File> Place) and place the image in the center of the document.

Step 3

Now we need to convert our image into a smart object. Right-click on the image layer and select Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object).

Step 4

After that, let’s create a duplicate smart object: Right-click> Duplicate layer (Duplicate Layer).

Step 5

Create four more duplicate smart objects, just like in the previous step. After that, you can easily change the image in all smart objects by simply replacing the photo in the first smart object.

Step 6

Now let’s create the shapes for our template. Choose a tool Rectangle (U, Rectangle) to create a rectangle shape, and use the following settings: Width (Width): 432; Height (Height): 432.

Step 7

After that create a second shape with the following settings: Width (Width): 594; Height (Height): 594; No fill; Stroke (Stroke): 81.

Step 8

Create a third shape with the following settings: Width (Width): 756; Height (Height): 756; No fill; Stroke (Stroke): 81.

Step 9

Create a fourth shape with the following settings: Width (Width): 918; Height (Height): 918; No fill; Stroke (Stroke): 81.

Step 10

For the last form use the following settings: Width (Width): 1080; Height (Height): 1080; No fill; Stroke (Stroke): 81.

Step 11

Press V and select all the layers with our shapes, and then click on the Align Center Horizontally and Align Center Vertically buttons.

Step 12

Now we need to move each shape below each smart object.

Step 13

Make the main smart object and background layer invisible.

Step 14

Now select the first smart object and right-click> Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask).

Step 15

Create a clipping mask for each smart object using the same method as in the previous step.

Step 16

To simplify working with our layers, we need to create a group of layers. Highlight each smart object and shape to it, and then click the Create New Group icon. We should have 5 groups.

Part 2. How to create color effects

Step 1

To create a black and white filter, we will use a gradient map. Select the first smart object and go to Layer> New Corrective Words> Gradient Map (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Gradient Map).

Step 2

After that, right-click> Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask).

Step 3

Now create another gradient map above, but use the following colors # 21382e; # 3d3b6d; # fd605b.

Step 4

Select the layer with the gradient map you just created and create another clipping mask.

Step 5

Create another gradient map with a clipping mask in the second group with the following colors # 31444b; # 843332.

Step 6

Now let’s create another gradient map with a clipping mask, as before, but for the third group of layers. To do this, use the following colors # 16172b; # df7136.

Step 7

For the next group of layers, use a gradient map with the following colors: # dd0a00; # fe7f32.

Step 8

For the last group of layers, use a gradient map with the following colors: # 5b673f; # a23c2d.

Step 9

Now we need our image to look a bit dull. Go to Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Exposure (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Exposure) and use the following settings: Shift (Offset): +0.0200.

Part 3. How to create an animation from a static image

Step 1

To start creating an animation, open Window> Timeline (Window> Timeline) and then click Create video timeline (Create Video Timeline).

Step 2

Select a smart object in the first layer group, press Ctrl + T and rotate the image by -180 °, while holding the Shift button (translator’s note: or just right-click> Rotate 180 °).

Step 3

Select a smart object in the second layer group, and then press Ctrl + T and rotate the image by -90 °, while holding the Shift button (translator’s note: or just right-click> Rotate 90 ° counterclockwise).

Step 4

Select the next smart object, then press Ctrl + T and rotate the image 180 °.

Step 5

Select a smart object in the fourth layer group, and then press Ctrl + T and rotate the image 90 ° while holding the Shift button (translator’s note:or just right-click> Rotate 90 ° clockwise).

Step 6

Select the last smart object, then press Ctrl + T and rotate the image 180 °.

Step 7

Open the first smart object on the panel Time scale (Timeline) and move the time indicator to 0: 00: 00: 00. After that, click the timer icon next to Perspective (Transform) to create the first keyframe.

Step 8

Move the time pointer to 0: 00: 02: 00, and then rotate the smart object 180 ° while holding the Shift button.

Step 9

Open the second smart object in the timeline panel and create the first keyframe at 0: 00: 00: 00. Move the time indicator to 0: 00: 02: 00 and rotate the smart object 90 ° while holding the Shift button.

Step 10

Open the next smart object in the timeline panel and create the first keyframe at 0: 00: 00: 00. Move the time indicator to 0: 00: 02: 00 and rotate the smart object 180 ° while holding the Shift button.

Step 11

Open the fourth smart object in the timeline panel and create the first keyframe at 0: 00: 00: 00. Move the time indicator to 0: 00: 02: 00 and rotate the smart object by -90 ° while holding the Shift button.

Step 12

Open the last smart object in the timeline panel and create the first keyframe at 0: 00: 00: 00. Move the time indicator to 0: 00: 02: 00 and rotate the smart object 180 ° while holding the Shift button.

Here is how our animation should look after the above manipulations.

Step 13

Now we need to create an animation for color effects. Open the black and white filter in the timeline panel and move the time indicator to 0: 00: 00: 00. After that, click the timer icon next to the opacity to create the first keyframe.

Step 14

Move the time indicator to 0: 00: 04: 00 and change Opacity (Opacity) layer at 0% in the Layers panel.

Step 15

Duplicate this layer four times by right-clicking> Duplicate layer (Duplicate Layer) and place each duplicate filter above each smart object. The animation for this layer is copied with the layer.

Step 16

Select the gradient map in the first layer group, and then move the time indicator to 0: 00: 00: 00. After that, click the timer icon next to the opacity to create the first keyframe.

Step 17

Move the time indicator to 0: 00: 02: 00 and change Opacity (Opacity) layer at 0% in the Layers panel.

Step 18

Now we need to copy the keyframes. Select two keyframes, hold the Ctrl key, then right-click and click Copy (Copy).

Step 19

Open the gradient map in the next group of layers. After that, click the Timer icon “next to the panel Opacity (Opacity) on the panel Timeline (Timeline) and right click > Paste (Paste).

Step 20

Now let’s create copies of key frames for all gradient maps, as we did before.

Part 4. How to visualize animation for Instagram

Step 1

To save the animation for Instagram, we need to click the icon in the upper right corner and select Export video (Render Video).

Step 2

Make the following settings in the panel Export video (Render Video): Format (Format): H.264; The size (Size): document size; Range (Range): all shots (All Frames). And then click Rendering (Render).

Part 5. How to replace the image used in the template

Step 1

If you want to change the image used for the animation, then right-click> Edit content (Edit Contents) on the smart object we created at the beginning.

Step 2

Place the new image above the old one, press Alt + F4 to close the file, and then press Save (Save).

Great job! All is ready!

Thus, we can create an animated template in Adobe Photoshop using smart objects.
