Rain Animation in Photoshop

In this lesson we will try to animate cloudy weather.

Hero of events choose yourself.
Since this is a lesson in animation, I will briefly describe the stages of creating a central character, without going into details.

First, create a new document (for example, 450x500pix).
We translate the background into the state of a simple layer (double click on the LMB).
And we apply to this layer the Gradient Style (Layer-Layer Style-Gradient Overlay).

Soft Brush (Brush Tool) light blue on the New layer draw a strip at the bottom of the document and lower its Opacity (Opacity) approximately to 50% This is the boundary of the land.

Now draw the clouds.
Again, use a soft bluish brush. Slightly blur the lines (Gaussian blur filter – Filter-Gaussian Blur). Blur everything 2-4pix. Determine the degree of blur, depending on the size of your document and the desired result. And add individual points on the New layer, slightly lowering their Opacity (Opacity). The degree of opacity reduction choose yourself.

Let’s go further.
The main character, who had to walk in the rain)))

It all starts with a sketch, then I drew a base, gradual detailing, shadows and the HERO is ready! ))))

I worked with a brush (Brush Tool), changing the Opacity (Opacity) and using Gaussian blur (Filter-Gaussian Blur). You can merge all layers into a group (Ctrl +G) or merge into one layer (Ctrl +E, if you are sure that more correction is not required)))
Add a reflection – the surface is wet … ..

A copy of the protagonist, a reflection of it vertically (Edit-Transform-Flip Vertical), Opacity reduction (Opacity) layer to about 65% (you can still soft Eraser Eraser Tool wipe a little) and blur the reflection with your finger (Smudge Tool) Strength60%

Rigid White Brush 1-3pix draw a few points. To make the rain trickles thin, take a smaller brush. Depending on the distance between the points, the density of rain varies. What rain do you like more?

Using Transformation (Edit-Transform) stretch the points. Copy the layer and fill the entire space of the picture.
Next, merge all the parts of the rain together. The resulting layer is copied and placed copies one under the other. We unite.

Reduce the Opacity of this layer to about 40%
Now, for the layer Rain create a mask (Add layer mask – button at the bottom of the layer panel) and paint over the following areas:

Select the doggie by clicking on the icon of this layer. +Ctrl, and the rest is drawn with a soft brush.
We have painted over the places where there will be no rain.

By the way, you can make the background of the rain: drops smaller, opacity below. The distribution is the same. And then merge the foreground and background layers together.

Let’s leave a layer for now Rain at rest.
Make circles on the ground from raindrops.
There is such a brush called Splish splash with drops of water, it will be useful to us.
Create three layers and on them in white or bluish color draw circles from the water.
Reduce the size of each layer vertically and add perspective – expanding at the front and tapering in the background. In order to give volume to the space.

Remember that the size of the droplets on the ground must match the size of the raindrops!
Here is what happened:

This is an example of one of the layers. Layers can be called: Drops on the ground, Drops on the ground 1, Drops on the ground 2.
To each layer Drops on the ground I added a layer mask and black soft brush opacity 50% held a strip in the far part of the surface with drops. The farther – the worse it can be seen.
It’s easier to make one mask and copy it onto the remaining layers (press the mask icon +Alt and drag to another layer).
I also shaded the bottom of the dog’s boots and the base of the reflection a little.

Now draw a spray of rain on the clothes.
Again three new layers and on each rigid white brush draw different points, and then apply a Gaussian blur filter (Filter-Gaussian Blur). The degree of blur choose for yourself. Experiment in the same way with Opacity.

You can also use the brush Splish splash. I used the option of splashing water droplets in different directions.
Reduce the brush and distribute such droplets on the cloak. Unnecessary parts erase Eraser.

For layers Drops on clothes create a layer mask , hiding the dog (click on the icon of this layer +Ctrl). Since, we drew the drops falling from above, and not flowing down the object. The resulting mask is copied to other layers of drops on clothes (how to do – see above).
It turns out a lot of layers – and as I said, it is convenient to combine them into groups: Precipitation, Dog etc.
The preparation of the animation is complete.

We proceed to the revival of the picture.
Open the Animation Window (Window-Animation) and begin to work.
I will tell you how to make a simpler version of the animation, for example, for an avatar and a more complex, but larger in weight, option.

Let’s start with the simple.
For example, I will make an avatar with a resolution of 150x175pix.
Algorithm that we will use to create animation, I have already told in my lessons:
the motion of the main object is superimposed by the movement of other objects.
First of all, remove the chain icon connecting the layer icon and layer mask Rain. The rain moves, and the dog stands still))) The rain is the main object.

For the first frame, raise the rain layer up. It is better not to move with Transformation (Edit-Transform), and the arrows or pressing paintwork.
Make a copy of the frame (one – Duplicates selected frames), and for the second frame we move the rain down.
Create a series of frames (2Tweens animation frames) and in the opening window put the number 2.
Now delete the last one – the 4th frame to create a uniform motion.

We got an animation of 3 frames.
“Revive” drops on the ground and on the raincoat.
one-th frame – Drops on the ground, Drops on clothes
2-th frame – Drops on the ground 1, Drops on clothes 1
3-I frame – Drops on the ground 2, Drops on clothes 2.
Time for all frames 0.2 sec.
It turns out like this:

And now let’s try something more complicated.

Some additional training.
First of all: if you want the animation to be longer in the number of frames, that is, the number of different events (otherwise there is simply no sense in making the same frames, increasing the file size), you need to make the layer with the rain longer — to make it longer))) one rain under the other, and three.
Increasing the number of frames by increasing the number of frames in the series, you only make the rain slower. And the power of doing things … )))) Just do not get carried away with this.

Secondly: copy the layer Clouds (in the end, three layers) and apply a plastic filter to two of them (Filter-Liquify) or Transformation (Edit-Transform- …) to slightly change the position of the clouds.

Thirdly: on a new layer (above the clouds) draw a lightning brush.
Copy this layer, slightly increase the size of the copy (Edit-Transform).

Now we make a mixed copy of all visible layers – it is convenient to do this on top of all layers of the document. How to do: get up on the topmost layer and press – Ctrl +Alt +Shift +E.
Using Levels (Image-Adujstmens-Levels …) make this layer bright. I also slightly reduced its color (Image-Adujstmens-Hue \Saturation …). And with the help of the layer mask, it hid a part of the flare (painting the invisible part of the layer with a black soft, large brush). This layer is called Shine.

I also wanted the dog to wink)))
Make a copy of the face on a new layer and using the Plastic filter (Filter-Liquify) slightly squeeze the cheek (make sure that the edges of the copy layer do not budge) as it rises when you wink. It is this copy that we will include in the frame where the dog will wink.
Now draw the second open eye and paint over the visibility of the closed one. This can be done on the New layer or, if you have brought all the layers with the image of a dog together, on the main layer This is the main position of the muzzle during the entire animation.

Now for the frames …
As in the first case, we create two frames with the movement of rain, but now we are creating a series of 6 frames (the latter is being deleted). A total of 7 frames.
I set the time – 0.1 seconds.
Make a copy of the 4th frame, change the time of the original frame and its copy to 0 sec.
We do the same with the now 6th frame (previously 5th): copy and change the time.
It turned out 9 frames. The 5th frame is a copy of the 4th, the 7th frame is a copy of the 6th (earlier 5th).

My distribution of layers in frames:
one – Clouds, Drops on clothes, Drops on the ground,
2 – Clouds, Drops on clothes 1, Drops on the ground 1
3 – Clouds 1, Drops on clothes 2, Drops on the ground 2, Lightning
four – Clouds 1, Drops on clothes, Drops on the ground 1, Light
five – Clouds 1, Drops on clothes, Drops on the ground 1, Lightning litter (larger)
6 – Clouds 2, Drops on clothes 1, Drops on the ground, Light
7 – Clouds 2, Drops on clothes 1, Drops on the ground, Lightning litter
eight – Clouds 2, Drops on clothes 2, Drops on the ground 2
9 – Clouds, Drops on clothes 3, Drops on the ground 1, Doggie winking

Explanations: clouds move slower than rain; layers of droplets on clothing and on the ground are repeated on frames that last for 0 sec – these additional frames for lightning; make sure that the first and last frames do not have the same layers – there will be a delay (if this is certainly not such an idea).

That’s all!
Experiment: make raindrops different in size, transparency, look for your option of creating splashes on clothes, try to draw flowing drops, a dog can pull with an ear … As usual, there is room for imagination and creativity!

Good luck to all!
