Today we will create an abstract design in Photoshop using stock images, brushes and a few recommendations for creating a composition. The lesson shows not only the technique of execution, but also reveals the essence of the application. It is very important for us that you understand each step. So you can learn something new from this lesson.

Upon completion of the lesson, you will learn:
– create a single script from multiple images
– use shades and colors to create focus
– adjust image hues
– cut objects from the background
– create grunge background
– create your composition based on color shades and textures
– carry out a thin image retouching

STEP 1. Let’s start by creating a new document 3000 x 2000 px in RGB color mode, with a resolution of 72 (CTRL + N). Open the paper texture, select all (CTRL + A), copy (CTRL + C) and paste into our document (CTRL + V). Place the texture as in the screenshot below.

STEP 2. Next, go Image – Correction – Discolor (Image> Adjustments> Desaturate), or press the keys (CTRL + SHIFT + U) and Image – Correction – Levels (Image Adjustments> Levels). Apply the settings listed below. Double-duplicate this layer (CTRL + double-click J) and place copies as shown below. Deploy them.

STEP 3. Choose a tool Eraser (Eraser Tool (E), set the round soft brush, 40% opacity (Opacity) and erase where the edges overlap to create a single unit. Use CTRL + click on the layer icon to select the corresponding layers.

STEP four. Open the image “Vienne_6_by_liam_stock” .jpg (File – Open(File> Open …). Double click on the layer to remove the lock. Click OK and then we go. Layer– Create duplicate layer(Layer> Duplicate Layer (CTRL + J).

STEP 5. Let’s go Filter – Other – Color Contrast (Filter> Other> High Pass). Install radius 2 px (radius) and click OK. Set the blending mode for this layer. Overlap (Overlay).
This will increase the contrast and improve the picture quality.

STEP 6. Let’s go Layer – Merge Visible (Layer> Merge visible (CTRL + SHIFT + E). Next, select the tool Pen (Tool (P), set in the top settings panel Contours (Paths) and highlight the girl. You can enlarge the image to make the selection more accurate. Do not forget to close the contour.

STEP 7. Right-click on the contour and select To form a selected area (Make Selection). Set the feathering radius to 0 px and click OK. Copy the image (CTRL + C), back to our document. Window – Untitled-1 (Window> Untitled-1) and paste the copied image of the girl (CTRL + V). Apply the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool (E) to remove any jagged edges.

STEP 8. Further. we go Editing – Free Transformation (Edit> Free Transform (CTRL + T) to switch to the free transformation mode, click and drag the square in the corner. At the same time, hold down the SHIFT key to keep the proportions. To exit the free transformation mode, press Enter. Go to the image.

STEP 9. Choose a tool Healing Brush (Spot Healing Brush (J) and click on the skin. This will help you to retouch quickly and efficiently. Let’s go Layer – Correction – Discolor (Layer> Adjustments> Desaturate) (press simultaneously CTRL + SHIFT + U).
You can apply the tool Stamp (Clone Stamp Tool (S), but it will take twice as long.

STEP ten. Next we go Layer – New corrective layer – Brightness/Contrast(Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Brightness / Contrast). Apply the following settings.

STEP eleven. Open the “Mountain_Stock_10_by_ForsakeWolf” image .jpg. Select the entire image (CTRL + A), copy the image (CTRL + C), return to our document. Window – Untitled-1 (Window> Untitled-1) and paste into our document. Press CTRL + T to switch to the free transformation mode and change the size as in the screenshot below. Press Enter and discolor the image (CTRL + SHIFT + U).

STEP 12. Next we go Layer- Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All). Open the watercolor brush file. In the upper brush settings palette, load the abr file from the folder where the watercolor brushes are located, click load or double click on the file.

STEP 13. Since we are standing on a layer mask, select the tool Brush (Brush Tool (B), select one of the brushes that you loaded in STEP 12 and rotate the brush to get horizontal splashes. A preview of the brush setting is very useful, use it as an example.

STEP 14. Install brush opacity (Opacity) 30% (click “3”), reduce its size to about 1400 px and paint over the edges of the image, as in the screenshot below. Next, change the brush, set opacity (Opacity) 100% (press “0”) and paint over the remaining edges. Duplicate the image (CTRL + J) and flip horizontally (CTRL + T> right-click> Flip Horizontal-Flip Horizontal).
Repeat the steps until you get the image, as in the screenshot below. Next we go Image – Correction – Brightness / Contrast (Image> Adjustments> Brightness / Contrast) and increase the contrast slightly.

STEP 15. Choosing a tool Move (Move Tool (V), CTRL + click on the model in the image to select the layer with the girl, then go again Layer- Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All). Repeat STEP 12 for the bottom of the dress.

STEP 16. Open the “1.psd” file from the downloaded “Cinema 4D Render Pack” folder. Turn off the visibility of the bottom layer and go to the “Layer 0” layer. Choose a tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), select the abstraction and copy it (CTRL + C).

STEP 17. Go back to our document and paste the copied image of the abstraction (CTRL + V). Let’s go Image – Correction – Discolor (Image> Adjustments> Desaturate) (CTRL + SHIFT + U), then go Layer – create duplicate layer (Layer> Duplicate Layer) (CTRL + J). Turn off the visibility of the original image layer.

STEP 18. Let’s go Editing – Free Transformation (Edit> Free Transform (CTRL + T) and scale and expand the image, as in the screenshot below. Press Enter. Next we go Layer- Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All).
We use only part of the abstraction as a dress for a girl. In our case, I want to create a headdress.

STEP 19. Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool (B), set up a round, hard brush (Rigidity 100% (Hardness) and paint over the layer mask as shown in the screenshot below. Thus, we will hide this part and leave only the desired shape.

STEP 20. Open the pen image. Repeat STEP 5 to increase the contrast. Next, go to the bookmark Channels (Channels), bookmark can be activated via Window – Channels (Window> Channels) and select the blue channel and holding the left mouse button, drag it to the window Create a new channel (Create New Channel). You will have a new channel, a copy of the blue channel.

STEP 21. Go to a copy of the blue channel. Next, go Picture – Correction – Curves(Image> Adjustments> Curves (CTRL + M). Image – Correction – Levels (Image> Adjustments> Levels (CTRL + L). Apply the settings, as in the screenshot.

STEP 22. Choosing a tool Brush (Brush Tool (B), press the “D” key to set the foreground color to pure black and paint the inside of the pen.

STEP 23. Let’s go Image – Correction – Curves (Image> Adjustments> Curves). Apply the settings as in the screenshot below. (click on the curve to enter a curve point, then draw a curve or enter values). We frame the image with the tool. Frame (Crop (C) to remove excess.

STEP 24. We got the maximum contrast between the silhouette of the pen and the background, we can cut the pen. Press CTRL + click on the blue channel copy icon to load the selection, then go to the tab Layers (Layers), click on the icon of the layer with the pen to make the layer with the pen active and go Selection – Inversion (Select> Inverse) or press hotkeys (CTRL + SHIFT + I), copy the image with the stylus (CTRL + C).

STEP 25. We return to our document (you can through the top menu bar Window – Untitled-1 (Window> Untitled-1) and paste the image of the pen into our document. Duplicate the feather layer. (CTRL + J), turn off the visibility of the layer with the original and bleach a copy of the layer with a pen (CTRL + SHIFT + U).

STEP 26. Next we go Image – Correction – Brightness / Contrast (Image> Adjustments> Brightness / Contrast). Apply the settings as in the screenshot below.

STEP 27. Next, press CTRL + T to switch to the free transformation mode, scale and place, as in the screenshot below. Press Enter. Duplicate this layer (CTRL + J), press CTRL + T, scale and place as in the screenshot. Do the same procedure with the rest of the feathers.

STEP 28. Select all the layers with feathers (SHIFT + click on the layers icon) and then go Layer- Merge Layers (Layer> Merge Layers (CTRL + E).
Next we go Image – Correction – Brightness / Contrast (Image> Adjustments> Brightness / Contrast) to match the shades.
Although we applied it on feathers, which did not mean that it would be perfect from the very beginning. Everything is achieved by trial and error, and it gives a lot of fun.

STEP 29. Turn on the visibility of our original layer with abstraction, and duplicate this layer again (CTRL + J). Press CTRL + T for the free transform mode and place the abstractions as in the screenshot below. Next, repeat STEP 18 to hide unwanted areas.
I added this “sleeve” because I want our model to stand out from the background and contrast, the best way to achieve this. I removed the part that covered the girl’s shoulder because I don’t want it to look like a weapon.

STEP thirty. Open the sky image. Select the entire image (CTRL + A), copy the image (CTRL + C), return to our document. Window – Untitled-1 (Window> Untitled-1) and paste into our document. Press CTRL + T to switch to the free transformation mode and change the size as in the screenshot below. Press Enter.

STEP 31. Discolor the image with the sky (CTRL + SHIFT + U), duplicate the layer, expand the image and place it as in the screenshot below. Further. we go Layer- Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All). Apply the technique as in STEP 12 to create borders, as in the screenshot below. Feel freer when choosing a brush opacity, you can vary the brush opacity to achieve more interesting effects.

STEP 32. Create a new layer (Layer- New – Layer Layer> New> Layer or CTRL + SHIFT + N). Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool (B), select a watercolor brush, rotate it so that you can draw the “oblique” splashes, press the D key and draw several splashes. Vary the brush opacity for a more harmonious combination (the keys from “1” to “0” change the opacity brushes from 10 to 100%).

STEP 33. Create a new layer (CTRL + SHIFT + N), select the tool Brush (Brush Tool (B), select a soft round brush and draw a few large strokes, as in the screenshot below. Use bright colors.

STEP 34. Set the blending mode for this layer. Soft light (Soft Light) and opacity (Opacity) 37%.

STEP 35. There is a terrible bright spot near the girl, let’s eliminate it. Duplicate the image with abstraction (CTRL + J) and place it like in the screenshot below, then go Layer – Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All).

STEP 36. Choose a tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool (T), click on the document and hold down the left mouse button and drag to form an area for text. Type text at your choice, press CTRL + A and set the font “Andes” and size approximately 190.

STEP 37. Go to the topmost layer, select all the work (CTRL + A), copy the merged layers (CTRL + SHIFT + C) and paste (CTRL + V). You will have a merged layer on top of all layers. Next, go Filter – Sharpness – Sharpness (Filter> Sharpen> Sharpen).
