Create a black and white poster in Photoshop

Final result

Source materials:

STEP 1. Create a new document (600X650px).
Fill the document with the color shade # 343030.

Upload an image ‘City in the fog’, move the image to our document and position it at the bottom of the document:

So apply to the layer with the city layer mask . Choose a large soft round brush of black color with an opacity of about 20%, and apply a brush on the layer mask to hide the upper part of the city, combining the upper part of the city with the background:

Next, on the city image layer, apply a new adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation), as a clipping mask.

Settings for the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation):

Color tone(Hue): 0
Saturation(Saturation): -100
Brightness(Lightness): 0

STEP 2. Next, repeat Step 1, but this time add an image of the sky with clouds (see the source materials at the beginning of this lesson), place the clouds at the top of the document:

STEP 3. Next, download the rusting metal texture. Move the texture to our document, rename the texture layer to ‘metal texture’.

Now, lower the layer’s opacity to 10%. Next, apply an adjustment layer to the layer. Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation):

Settings for the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation):

Color tone(Hue): 0
Saturation(Saturation): -100
Brightness(Lightness): 0

This should add detail to our background:

STEP 4. Now download a set of watercolor brushes.

Create a new layer, name this layer ‘dark watercolor brushes’. Use several brushes from the set; in the brush settings, set the color shade to black, the brush opacity is 20%:

Next, repeat the same technique, this time apply brushes to a new color on a new layer, name a new layer ‘bright watercolor brushes’:

STEP 5. So, upload an image of an old man, move the image to our document and place it on the left side of the document:

Next, reduce the opacity of this layer to 80%. Apply a layer mask to this layer, then choose a medium-sized soft round black brush to hide the edges of the image of the man:

Next, apply adjustment layers. Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation) and Levels (Level):

Settings for the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation):

Color tone(Hue): 0
Saturation(Saturation): -90
Brightness(Lightness): 0

Settings for the adjustment layer Levels (Level):

14 / 0.93 / 235

STEP 6. Repeat Step 5, add the second man to our image, position it on the right side of the document:

STEP 7. Now, create a new layer, name this layer “light source”.

Via Radial gradient (radial gradient from white to transparent), draw a light source between two men.

Next, lower the opacity of the ‘light source’ layer to 50% and change the blending mode to Overlap (overlay):

STEP 8. Next, download the gangster image from the link at the beginning of the lesson. Move the gangster image to our document.

Next, reduce the opacity of the gangster layer to 90%, apply a layer mask to the layer and apply a black soft round brush to the mask layer to hide the lower part of the image and combine the image of the gangster with the main background:

Next, apply adjustment layers. Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation) and Levels (Level) (use each adjustment layer as a clipping mask):

Settings for the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation):

Color tone (Hue): 0
Saturation (Saturation): -85
Brightness (Lightness): 0

Settings for the adjustment layer Levels (Level):

9 / 0.87 / 221

STEP 9. Next, type the text at the top of the document. As the text I used the names of the main characters of the film:

Text Settings:

Font (Font): Mrs. Strange
The size (Size): 60pt
Tracking for selected characters (Kerning): -50
Colour (Color): ffffff
(Translator’s Note: activate the tab “Symbol”, go Window – Symbol (Window-Symbol). In the settings, you can already customize the text).

STEP 10. Next, create a new layer, name this layer ‘vignette’. With the help of a large round black brush with low opacity, walk around the edges around the document.

This should help attract the attention of the observer to the center of our composition:

So create a new layer, name this layer ‘central light’. Create a radial gradient from white to transparent in the center of your image.

Then, reduce the opacity of this layer to about 7%.

STEP 11. Next, add text at the bottom of your image. You can duplicate the text from the real movie poster, which is located at the bottom of the image.

Use the same text settings as for the upper text, but, of course, reduce the font size slightly:

Next, download the globe icon from the link at the beginning of this lesson. Move the globe icon to our document and position it at the bottom to the right of the text. Reduce the opacity to 20% to make it subtle:

STEP 12. Next, type the name of the movie.
Text settings for the movie title:

Font (Font): Egypt 22
The size (Size): 92pt
Tracking for selected characters (Kerning): -50
Colour (Color): ffcb03

Next, apply layer styles to text to get the effect of gilded text. We need to apply the option shadow, outer glow, emboss, gradient overlay and stroke. The settings for each option are listed below:

Shadow (Drop Shadow):

Blend mode (Blend Mode): Multiplication (Multiply)
Colour (Color): 000000
Opacity (Opacity): 100%
Angle (Angle): 90
Bias (Distance): 2px
Swipe(Spread): 0%
The size (Size): 5px

External glow (Outer Glow):

Blend mode (Blend Mode): Normal (Normal)
Opacity (Opacity): 20%
Noise (Noise): 0%
Colour(Color): ffffff
Swipe(Spread): 0%
The size (Size): 46px

Stamping(Bevel and Emboss):

Style (Style): Inner bevel (Inner Bevel)
Method(Technique): Smooth(Smooth)
Depth (Depth): 171%
Direction (Direction): Top (Up)
The size(Size): 0px
Softening (Soften): 2px

Angle(Angle): 90
Height(Altitude): 30 degrees
Mode backlight(Highlight Color): ffefc7
Opacity(Highlight Opacity): 75%
Mode the shadows(Shadow Color): 000000
Opacity(Opacity): 75%

Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Blend mode (Blend Mode): Normal (Normal)
Opacity (Opacity): 100%
Gradient (Gradient): 63532d / e3cfa0 / e3cfa0 / bca864 / efe2b4
Style (Style): Linear (Linear)
Angle(Angle): 90

Stroke (Stroke):

The size (Size): 1px
Position (Position): Inside (Inside)
Blend mode (Blend Mode): Normal (Normal)
Opacity(Opacity): 100%
Type of strokes(Fill type): Gradient(Gradient)
Gradient(Gradient): d0bc8e / 9d8c54 / 463f28 / 463f28 / 9d8c54 / d8c495
Style(Style): Linear(Linear)
Scale(Scale): 100%

STEP 13. Now, create a new layer, name this layer ‘overlay lighting’.
Create a radial gradient from white to transparent in the center of the image .:

Next, reduce the opacity of this layer to 15%, and change the blending mode to Overlap (overlay):

STEP 14. Next, create a new layer, name this layer “bleaching / darkening”. Let’s go Editing – Fill (edit> fill) and fill the layer with 50% gray. Then, change the blending mode to Overlap (overlay). This mode will hide your fill with 50% gray, but will allow you to make light correction without harming your image.

Use a soft black brush, about 10% opacity to create shadows and a soft white brush to lighten.

In the screenshots below, you can see the ‘bleaching / darkening’ layer under normal blending mode and blending mode Overlap (overlay):

STEP 15. Next, apply 3 final adjustment layers. Do not use these adjustment layers as clipping masks, since we want to apply this correction to the entire image, and not just to the underlying layer.

Settings for the adjustment layer Gradient map (Gradient Map):

Gradient (Gradient): color limits 094b9c to ffd200
Opacity (Opacity): 3%

Settings for the adjustment layer Levels (Level):

3 / 0.95 / 246

Settings for the adjustment layer Curves (Curves):

(see settings below):

And we finished the lesson!
