Create a bokeh wallpaper in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we will learn how to create bright wallpapers with bokeh effects using several filters, as well as creating a brush.

Step 1. Background and texture

Open Photoshop and create a new document (Ctrl + N) 1440 x 900 px in size with a transparent background, name the layer “Background1”, fill it with dark gray # 1E1E1E, (Edit-> Run Fill (Edit-> Fill) and enter this color), then add a layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) on “Background 1” by clicking on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette, color from # 1E1E1E to # 1F1F1F.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), rename it to “Background 2”, fill it with white, Edit-> Run Fill-> White (Edit-> Fill-> White), apply a different layer style. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) on this layer is from # E83484 to # CE5449 with these parameters:

Place the layer “Background 2” in the new group, to do this, drag the layer thumbnail to the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers palette, name this group “Background 2” and change the blending mode to Overlap (Overlay).

Step 2. Brush the heart

In this step we will create Brush (Brush) heart for bokeh effect, to do this, create a new document (Ctrl + N) with a size of 500 x 500 px and a transparent background, and then select the tool Arbitrary shape (Custom Shape Tool) (U), select the heart shape in the toolbar. Create a shape in the center of the document.

Change Fill opacity (Fill Opacity) for the shape by 50% and add a layer style Stroke (Stroke) to a 5px heart shape, and change Blend mode (Blend Mode) on Overlap (Overlay).

Make sure you have a heart layer activated and go Edit-> Define Brush (Edit-> Define Brush Preset) in order to save this shape as a brush. Call it “Heart Bokeh”.

Before using this brush, we need to adjust it a little more. To do this, open the panel. Brush (Brush), Window-> Brush (Window-> Brush), select the brush we created and change the settings as in the image below. Remember to save the brush when everything is ready by clicking on the lower right icon in the brush panel.

Step 3. Blurring Hearts

Now we have our own brush. Let’s go back to the main document. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool) (B), select the created brush and white color, then create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and draw a few hearts all over the document. When you are satisfied with the result, put this layer with hearts into a new group called “Bokeh hearts”, to do this, drag the layer thumbnail to the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers palette. Change Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this group on Lightening basics (Color Dodge).

Let’s add a little blur on these hearts, to do this, go Filter-> Blur-> Gaussian Blur (Filter-> Blur-> Gaussian Blur) with radius (Radius) 20 px. Change Fill (Fill) Blur 50%.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) in the same group, draw a few more hearts on the whole document using Brushes (Brush Tool). Add a Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) on these hearts, but this time with a radius of 5 px. Change Fill (Fill) of this layer to 75%.

Create another new layer in the same group, again draw a few hearts on the whole document using Brushes (Brush Tool). This time we will apply the filter Colour contrast (High Pass) on these hearts, for this go to Filter-> Other-> Color Contrast (Filter-> Other-> High Pass) with a radius of 5 px. Change Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Lightening basics (Color dodge) and him Fill (Fill) up to 50%.

Step 4. Bokeh Hearts

After creating blurry hearts, let’s create the foreground bokeh hearts. Create a new layer in the “Hearts Bokeh” group and draw some more hearts on the canvas.

Create a layer mask on this layer, activate the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool) (G), select a black and white gradient and draw a gradient on the layer mask that goes from the bottom of the document to about 35% up.

Duplicate the layer that we just worked with (Ctrl + J), put a new layer under the original, and then apply the filter Motion blur (Motion blur), for this we choose Filter-> Blur-> Motion Blur (Filter-> Blur-> Motion blur) with Offset (Distance) 100px and By angle (Angle) 0. Change Fill (Fill) of this layer to 20%.

Create a new layer in the same group, activate the soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B) white and draw on the right and left sides of the document using a different Opacity (Opacity) brush. The author used opacity from 25 to 35%. Create again a layer in the same group and with the same brush draw on some areas of the document to select individual hearts.

Step 5. Adjustment

In this step we will add two adjustment layers, for the first we will add Brightness / Contrast. For this we go Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Brightness / Contrast (Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Brightnes / Contrast) and set the values Brightness (Brightnes) 25 and Contrast (Contrast) 20.

For the second, add an adjustment layer. Selective color correction (Selective color) select Red (Reds) and add these parameters:

Our wallpapers are ready, I hope you learned something new when creating these wallpapers.
