Create a bright design for a poster in Photoshop

Various beverages, including alcoholic beverages, are the most frequently advertised products in the world. During major sporting events such as the Super Bowls, World Championships and the Olympic Games, companies spend millions on advertising their products on TV, using banners and advertising posters. In this case, due to the fact that drinks are liquids, it is very difficult to create a design using liquid objects. This requires great care, paying special attention to the separation of liquid objects and connecting them with each other, so that the result looks realistic.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a bright colorful advertising design for an alcoholic drink in Photoshop, using various methods and high-quality stock images. You will learn how to work with photographs of a liquid, learn how to take an image of an advertised drink, add matching elements to it, work with color and composition to achieve an excellent result.

It should be emphasized that this lesson does not in any way encourage the use of alcoholic beverages and is not an advertisement; this product is used only as an illustration of the methods outlined in the lesson.

Materials for the lesson:

Start by creating a new document in Photoshop, specify the size, as in the screenshot below. To create a new document, you can press the key combination CTRL+N or select in the menu File > New (File – Create).

Now add the main image of the bottle with a drink, for our lesson.

Move this image to your new document, move the image to position the bottle in the center of the workspace. To do this, use the tool. MoveTool (Move) (V).

Add color to our bottle image. To do this, create a new layer (click CTRL+SHIFT+N) so as not to spoil the original image. Choose a tool BrushTool (Brush) (B). In the tool parameter settings (to call them you can press the key on the keyboard B and click the right mouse button) specify the values for the size and stiffness, as in the screenshot below.

After adjusting the brush settings, start painting over the bottle. You do not need to strive to create any regular shapes, just follow the contours of the bottle. Use mainly red for drawing, as well as shades of orange and yellow. After painting with a brush, I got the following result:

For smoother mixing of the colors used, apply a filter to the layer. Filter > Blur > GaussianBlur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur). Specify a blur radius between 55-59 pixels.

After applying this filter, the colors used will be smoothly mixed, creating the effect of a gradient transition between them. Do not worry if color stains fall outside the borders of the bottle, later we will change the blending mode and this layer will not be noticeable on a black background. After the blur, I got the following result.

Change the layer blending mode to Color (Chromaticity), The opacity of the layer is 100%. As a result, the color will be added only to the middle tones of the image of the bottle, without affecting the pure white and black color. After this, the result will be as follows:

Duplicate this layer with the color and set the copy of the layer overlay mode. SoftLight (Soft light). This will increase the contrast and saturation of the colors used. I got the following result.

If you are satisfied with what your bottle looks like, you can finish adding color to it. I additionally duplicated the layers with color and moved the copies to the opposite side of the bottle, as shown below. Use the tool to drag layers. MoveTool (Move) (V).

Now let’s start adding spatter to work to create a dynamic effect.

Move this image into your work, discolor it – Image > Adjustment > Desaturation (Image – Correction – Discolor)(CTRL+SHIFT+U) and make the correction with ImageAutoLevels (Image – Autoton) (CTRL+SHIFT+L). This will make the image black and white and adjust the values for the Levels automatically.

Change the blending mode of the spray layer to Screen (Screen / Lightening). This will leave only the bright and neutral tones of the image visible and will hide everything that was black.

Move the spray layer (use the tool again MoveTool (Move) (V)) so that it seemed that the splash on the right bends around the bottle, as shown in the screenshot.

Now you need to erase too much. Choose a tool EraserTool (Eraser) (E). In the settings of the instrument parameters (by pressing the key on the keyboard E click the right mouse button) specify the following values for size and stiffness. For tool EraserTool (Eraser) we need a big brush of medium hardness.

Erase all the excess on the left and below the bottle, leaving only a splash on the right.
Add colors to our liquid splash. To do this, trigger a correction. Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation), by clicking CTRL+U. Set the following settings (note, you need to tick the Colorize (Toning)).

As a result, your work will look like this:

To create a more harmonious composition, add something else to your work, I used a photo of a martini glass (but you can choose something else if you want). I took an image from iStock Photostock (Note trans. The author does not give links), you can search for similar image on sxc.hu, deviantart.com and Google images.

Since my image with a glass is already on a black background, I just put it into work and changed the blending mode to Screen (Screen / Lightening), as we did with the spray layer. Try to find the same one, if you choose an image with a different background color, remove the entire excess background using the tool MagicWandTool (Magic wand) and layer mask.

Now we need to add more splashes and splashes to and around the bottle. You can use the images that are in the archive for the lesson. To add splashes follow the procedure described above, use different color tones in the settings for Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to create interesting color combinations.

My steps for adding splashes are as follows:

At this step, you create an atmosphere for all the work, giving it your chosen color tones, which will be the main ones in the final version. I decided to use shades of red, blue and pink. But you can use other colors at your discretion, as long as they combine with each other and the main color of the work.

Add a cherry to the work.
Move the cherry image to your work. Take the toolMagicWandTool (Magic wand) (W). Click on the white background around the cherry to highlight it and click Delete on keyboard. This will remove the white background around the cherry, but if some part of the background remains, take the tool EraserTool (Eraser) (E) and erase the extra background.

After we have separated the cherry from the background, duplicate this layer and change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap). This will make the cherry image more contrast.
Now use FreeTransform (Free Transformation) (to call it, press CTRL+T) to change the size of the cherry and place it in a suitable place. I think it’s best to place a cherry in the middle of a splash splash. Let’s create the impression that the cherry is inside this burst, i.e. floating in water, to do this, place the berry layer below the spray layers, but not all, leave some spray layers below the cherry.

When you decide on the size and location of the cherry, add a layer style. DropShadow (Shadow).

Note translator. Since we had two layers of cherries (one with the normal blend mode and one with the Overlap blend mode), and the author later mentions only one layer, we can combine these two layers. To do this, select them on the layers palette, right-click on them and select Merge Layers.
To add a layer style, click on the corresponding icon with the ‘f’ symbol at the bottom of the layers palette and select DropShadow (Shadow). Set the parameters as in the screenshot below.

Now duplicate the cherry layer several times and place copies in different places of your work. I placed some of them again inside splashes of water, and some around splashes.

Add the image of chili pepper to the work, you can use the image from the archive
Place this image in your working paper.

Next, follow the same method that we did with the cherry – cut the image with pepper, place it (or several) inside or near the spray. I got the following result.

Similarly, add to the work of strawberries. Cut it and place it in the desired place of work.

And finally, let’s add a paper lantern image to the work.

Select a flashlight in any way you like, I also removed the covers on the flashlight above and below. After selection, duplicate the layer with the flashlight several times, place the copies as if they are hanging on a string vertically (or horizontally), or you can leave only one flashlight. I used three copies of the flashlight and drew a thin white thread connecting them (draw a thin line using the BrushTool (Brush) and standard hard brush size of 3 pixels). Arrange all layers with flashlights, as we did earlier, i.e. place them below the spray layers.

The final result is shown below, you may have something more interesting! I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and learned something new! You can not stop at the achieved result, add something else to your work, add dynamism, and get your unique design decoration!
