Create a colorful logo in Photoshop

Today I will show you how to create a beautiful Apple WWDC logo in Photoshop CS5 using shapes and layer styles. You will learn how to create a beautiful logo, while not using a lot of technical techniques. The link to the PSD file of the lesson is listed at the end of the lesson. So let’s get started!

Final result

Step 1

First, create a new document (Ctrl + N) in Adobe Photoshop CS5 with the following dimensions: 1920 px x 1200 px (RGB color mode), resolution 72 pixels per inch (pixels / inch). Choose a tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool (G)) and fill the layer with the background color tint # 120807. Choose an Apple logo in PNG format. Add the selected logo to our working paper, I used the logo, a link to which is given at the beginning of the lesson. If necessary, you can zoom in on the image with the tool. Free transformation (Free Transform (Ctrl + T)).

Step 2

We get the following result.

Step 3

So, we created the outline of the logo. Now we add the next box to it. In this case, I chose the tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool (U)), in the settings of this tool set Radius (Radius) 15 px, then hold the (Shift) key + draw the next box, as shown in the screenshot below. Next, with the tool Free transformation (Free Transform (Ctrl + T)), rotate the square 45 degrees.

Reduce value Fillings (Fill) to 0% for a layer with a square. Next, click on the icon. Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel to apply a layer style Shadow (Drop Shadow).

Next, apply a layer style. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Go to the gradient settings. Set the gradient colors shown in the screenshot below. Click the OK button to close the gradient editor options window.

Change the blending mode for the layer with the square to Hard light (Hard Light).

We get the following result.

Step 4

We need to rasterize a new layer. To do this, create a new layer on top of the layer with a square, next, select both layers, and then press the keys (CTRL + E) to merge them together. Now, with the tool Move (Move Tool (V)), we can position the box inside the contour of the logo. When using the tool Move (Move Tool (V)), hold the (Alt) key + drag the square to create a duplicate square. Create a few squares. Using tool Free transformation (Free Transform (Ctrl + T)), vary the sizes of the squares.

Step 5

For duplicate layers with squares, we apply a different value. Fillings (Fill).

Next, we will also change the color of the squares.

In this case, create another duplicate of the layer with a square (by selecting the tool Move (Move Tool (V)) + holding the (Alt) key + drag the box to create a duplicate layer). Next, press the keys (CTRL + U) and in the correction dialog box Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) shift option slider Color tone (Hue) to the left to change the color tone of the square.

Now duplicate the blue square layer. Place duplicate blue squares as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 6

Continue adding squares, this time in a different color. To change the color, use the same correction command. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Now, duplicate the square box several times using the technique described above.

We get the following result.

Step 7

Layers with squares should be located one behind the other. Next, we return to the layer with the first square, create a duplicate layer (using the tool Moves (Move Tool (V)) + keys (Alt)). And then, change the color of the square with the help of correction Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation (CTRL + U)).

Now, duplicate the square box several times using the technique described above.

Step 8

Continue adding small squares of different color shades. Create a duplicate of the very first layer with a square, using the technique described above. And then, change the color of the duplicate square using correction Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation (CTRL + U)).

We get the following result.

Step 9

Using the above technique, add more squares of different color shades.

Step 10

In the central part of the logo, we will add more colored squares in the larger size. Apply to these layers a varying degree. Opacity (Opacity), as well as various blending modes, for example, Overlap (Overlay), Hard light (Hard Light), Soft light (Soft Light). Vary the size of the squares with Free transformation (Free Transform (Ctrl + T)).

Step 11

Now, remove the layer with the outline of the logo.

Step 12

By clicking on the icon “Create a new adjustment layer or fill layer” (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel, add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) on top of all layers. Set the curve as shown in the screenshot below to make a slight color correction.

Congratulations, we have completed the lesson!
