In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a denim texture in Adobe Photoshop from scratch using only filters and layer styles. You can create your own denim texture by choosing any size you like. Using layer style Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), you can turn the texture into a denim pattern.
So let’s get started!
The final result:
Step 1
Open Photoshop. Create a new PSD document, set the size of the working document at your discretion. Create a new layer, name this layer. Denim back background (Jeans Background). Fill the new layer with # 1c8bd2.
Step 2
Let’s go Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter> Noise> Add Noise). Set the value Effect (amount) by 14%, as shown in the screenshot below. Install Distribution (distribution) noise on Uniform (Uniform).
Step 3
Create a new layer, name this layer. Fabric texture 1 (Fabric Texture 1). Fill this layer with a gray tint # 868686.
Step 4
Let’s go Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter> Noise> Add Noise). Set the value Effect (amount) by 172%, as shown in the screenshot below. Install Distribution (distribution) noise on Uniform (Uniform). Do not forget to put a tick in the box Monochrome (Monochromatic).
Step 5
Duplicate layer Fabric texture 1 (Fabric Texture 1). Name the duplicate layer Fabric texture 2 (Fabric Texture 2).
Step 6
Next, go Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur). Install Angle (Angle) 0, and Bias (Distance) by 25 px. And also change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).
Step 7
Now go back to the layer Fabric texture 1 (Fabric Texture 1). Let’s go Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur). Install Angle (Angle) 90, and Bias (Distance) by 25 px. And also change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).
The denim texture should look like in the screenshot below.
Step 8
Create a new layer, name this layer. Diagonal lines (Diagonal Lines). Fill this layer with white. Next, decrease the value Fillings (Fill) for this layer to 0%, and then add a layer style Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), use a pixel pattern as a pattern.
Step 9
Right click on the layer Diagonal lines (Diagonal Lines) and in the window that appears, select the option Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object). Right click on the layer again Diagonal lines (Diagonal Lines) and in the window that appears select the option Rasterize layer (Rasterize Layer).
Step 10
Next, decrease the value Fillings (Fill) for a layer Diagonal lines (Diagonal Lines) up to 0%. Now add the following layer styles: Shadow (Drop Shadow) and Stamping (Bevel and Emboss).
Step 11
Duplicate layer Denim back background (Jeans Background), name the duplicate layer Hatching (Crosshatch). Move this duplicate layer to the top, placing it on top of all other layers, for this we go Layer – Arrange – Bring to Front (Layer> Arrange> Bring to Front), so we will move the duplicate layer to the top. Next, go Filter – Strokes – Cross Strokes (Filter> Brush Strokes> Crosshatch). In the settings window of this filter install Stroke length (stroke length): 16, Sharpness (sharpness): 14 and Intensity (strength): 1. And also change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft Light).
Step 12
Create a new layer, name this layer. The effect of washed jeans (Pre-washed effect), fill this layer with white. Make sure the foreground color is set to white and the background color to black. Next, go Filter – Rendering – Clouds (Filter> Render> Clouds). Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).
Step 13
As a final touch, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation).
Step 14
Next, add an adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map). Set the following gradient colors: # 2c2f35 and # 7fc3fd. If you do not like blue jeans, then of course you can choose any color of denim at your discretion. Change the blending mode for the adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map) on Soft light (Soft Light) or Chromaticity (Color) if you want to change the color of the denim.
Step 15
In the final step, apply the filter Colour contrast (High Pass) to add sharpness to the image.
If you want, you can use Stitching brushes, for example, to create a realistic pocket. So, the final result of the denim texture you can see in the screenshot below.
