Create a flipchart for text in Photoshop

At a time when digital displays are increasingly being replaced by digital displays, in places like airports, train stations, bus stations, and so on, they still live as a symbol of travel. Whether you use them in the application interface or retro design, the author is sure that you will find this lesson useful and interesting.

Materials for the lesson:

Open Photoshop and create a new document with 1200 x 600 pixels.

First, fill the background layer with # 666666. Next, use the texture with the scratches to give the background a surface appearance.

Use the texture suggested at the beginning of the lesson, or select one of the free tests from the list. Place your texture in the document just above the layer with the background. In the layers panel, change the blending mode of the texture layer to Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 10%.

The author has chosen the word for the inscription TYPE. You can use your text. Activate the tool Text(Horizontal Type Tool) and write it. To do this, select the font League Gothic with a size of about 500 pt. After creating the test, go to the menu Layer – Rasterize – Text (Layer> Rasterize> Type).

Create a new layer and use the tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool) in mode Figure (Shape) and with a radius of 15 pixels, draw the basic form of the scoreboard around the first letter. Calculate the dimensions so that the board figures do not touch each other. Also note that the shape layer must be under the text layer in the layers palette.

In the future, we duplicate the shape of the flipchart for the remaining letters.

Now put this layer in a new group. To do this, make it active and go to the menu Layer – Group Layers (Layer> Group Layers). Name the group Flap 1, to make your work more organized.

Add three layer styles to the shape – Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay), Shadow (Drop Shadow) and Stroke (Stroke). And so, go to the menu Layers – Layer Style – Gradient Overlay (Layer> Layer Style> Gradient Overlay).

Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay),

In the gradient settings window, select the style Mirror (Reflected). Now open the gradient editor by clicking on its view.

Choose from a set of black to white gradient.

Shadow (Drop Shadow)

Now we are going to add a shadow effect to our layer so that the shape of the scoreboard stands out from the background. In the layer style settings window, click the tab Shadow (Drop Shadow).

Stroke (Stroke)

Using the settings from the screenshot, add a stroke.

Now we rasterize the basic figure of the board. To do this, go to the menu Layers – Shredded – Figure (Layer> Rasterize> Shape). Select this layer in the layers palette and load its selection in the menu. Selection – Load Selection (Select> Load Selection). This will create a selection around the shape.

Now reduce the selection in the menu Selection – Modification – Compress (Select> Modify> Contract). In the dialog box, set the value to 5 pixels.

Create a new layer and fill it with the previously compressed black selection # 000000.

Result at this stage.

To create the appearance that the scoreboard is divided into two parts, we need to duplicate the upper part of the inner shape to a new layer and set it to our own layer style. Find the center of the inner figure. To do this, go to the menu Editing – Free Transform (Edit> Free Transform). Make sure you have the option checked. Show controls (Show Transform Controls).

Check that you have the Ctrl + R rulers turned on and pull out the horizontal guide, leaving it in the center of the shape.

Using the tool Rectangle selection(Rectangular Marquee Tool) create a selection around the top half of the shape. After that go to menu Layers – New – Copy to New Layer (Layer> New> Layer via Copy). This will automatically create a new layer with the selected upper part of the shape.

Make sure that the layer with the created half is active in the layers palette and open the layer style window. Apply Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

Create a new layer on top of the text layer. Make a selection with the tool Rectangle selection(Rectangular Marquee Tool) with dimensions of 200 pixels wide and 6 pixels in height. Fill the selection with gray color # 333333. With the tool Free transform (Free Transform) edit the edges of the rectangle by moving them inside.

Now we are going to make loops that will fasten the plates. Create a new layer and use the tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool) draw a rectangle with the size of 6×25 pixels and fill it with black color. Apply a layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

Duplicate the layer you just created and move the copy to the right. In the layers panel, select a layer with a separator (a gray horizontal line in the middle of our scoreboard) and two layers with loops.

Put these three layers in the layer group in the menu Layers – New – Group of Layers (Layer> New> Group from Layers) and name this group Split 1.

Now duplicate the group Flap 1 on the menu Layers – Duplicate groups (Layer> Duplicate Group). Name the duplicated group – Flap 2, so your work will be more organized and easier to navigate.

Use the tool Move(Move Tool) to put a copied plate under the next letter.
Repeat these steps for the following letters, changing the names of the duplicated groups.

Using the method described in the previous step, duplicate the group Split 1 and give the copy a name Split 2. Move this group to the next letter.

Repeat these steps for the following letters, changing the names of the duplicated groups.

Set the foreground color to white #FFFFFF.

Choose a tool Gradient (Gradient Tool) on the toolbar. In the top settings panel, select the radial mode for the gradient. Now click on the gradient window to open its editor.

Choose a gradient from white to transparent.

Now create a new layer on top of all other layers. Draw a gradient starting from about the center of the document to the end. Use the free transform to transform the glow layer so that it extends from the edges of the document and is oblong. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).

Create a new layer for the inner shadow, which will be visible at the edges of our document. Activate the tool Rectangle selection (Rectangular Marquee Tool) and in the top settings menu, set the value Feathering (Feather) 50 pixels. Now go to the menu Selection – All (Select> Select All). Invert selection Shift +Ctrl +I and fill it with black.

In this step, we will add some color to our work. Activate the topmost layer in the layers palette and add a new adjustment layer to the menu. Layers – New Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Gradient Map). Change the colors of the gradient adjustment layer to yellow and purple, if necessary, tick the setting Inversion (Reverse) so that the yellow colors cover the light shades of the work, and the purple colors influence the shadows.
Change the blending mode of the adjustment layer to Chromaticity (Color) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 50%.

That’s all. The author hopes that the lesson with useful and rich information will be very useful to you.
