Materials for the lesson:
Let’s start by creating a new document (CTRL + N) with a size of 1280×1024 px (RGB color mode) with a resolution of 72 pixels / inch. We use Paint bucket tool (Fill) (G) to fill the background layer with # 353535.
Create a new layer and take a soft round brush (AT).
Use this brush to paint a bright spot in the center of the canvas (# A2A2A2).
We find a stock image with a model, I used a photo from deviantArt.com. I want to thank the author for this photo. But you can use your own image.
Remove the background in your favorite way. To do this, you can use the tools Pen tool (Feather) (P), Magic wand tool (Magic Wand) (W), Magnetic lasso (Magnetic lasso) (L) or even filter Filter – Extract (Filter – Extract).
Paste the mask on the layer with the model by clicking on the button Add lyaer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the Layers panel, and select the black brush Flat Curve Thin Stiff Bristles
We draw on the mask using this brush, adjusting the level Opacity (Opacity) and brush size to hide the areas shown below:
Create a new layer, select Paint bucket tool (Fill) (G) and fill the layer with white. Place this layer behind the layer with the model. Press CTRL and click on the thumbnail of the model layer. As a result, the selection is loaded. Hide the model layer and fill the selection with black using Paint bucket tool (Fill) (G).
Apply the following filter to the layer: Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur).
We get the following result:
We apply another filter to this layer: Filter – Pixelate – Color Halftone (Filter – Appearance – Colored halftone).
We get the following result:
Set the layer parameter Fill (Fill) by 0% and change the blending mode to Darker color (Dark color).
Make the model layer visible again.
Duplicate (CTRL + J) model and apply the filter: Filter – Filter Gallery – Stylize – Glowing Edges (Filter – Filter Gallery – Styling – Edge Glow).
We get the following result:
Place this layer under the original layer with the model. Duplicate (CTRL + J) it twice. For the best result, we merge all three layers with the edges glowing into a group (hold down CTRL to select several layers at the same time and press CTRL + G). After that we activate FreeTransform (Free Transform) (CTRL + T) and move the group slightly to the right. Change the blending mode to Difference (Difference).
Click on the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Curves (Curves) to make a slight color correction.
We get the following result:
Hold ALT (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click between the model layer and the Curves adjustment layer to create a clipping mask.
We get the following result:
Now load the c130_splatter, Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 and Seu_Davi brushes. Create a new layer and select a brush from the c130_splatter set. Use this brush to add strokes on the canvas in black (Opacity – 20%). We have a new layer under the layer with a model and a group of layers.
Add more strokes using the brush from the Seu_Davi set.
We get the following result:
Create a new layer and select the next black brush from the c130_splatter set.
Change the Opacity and add strokes as shown below. Place this layer under the model layer:
Create a new layer and this time choose a brush from the Seu_Davi set. The brush should be black with an Opacity of 20%.
Use this brush on the canvas as shown below. Lay the layer under the layer with the model.
Create a new layer again and select a brush from the Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set. The brush should be black with an opacity of 40%.
Use this brush to add new strokes, as shown below. Lay the layer under the layer with the model.
Paste the mask on the layer by clicking on the button. Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel. Then take a round soft brush (B) in black with an Opacity of 30%.
Brush paint on the mask to hide the areas shown below:
Create a new layer and select a brush from the Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set.
Use this brush to add new strokes. The brush should be black with an Opacity of 50%. Lay the layer under the layer with the model.
As we did before, we paste the mask on the layer and hide the extra areas with the same brush.
Create a new layer and select a brush from the Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set.
Use this brush to add strokes with color # 002020 with an Opacity of 30%. Place this layer under the layer with the model.
Paste the mask onto the layer and choose a black brush. We draw on the mask to hide the middle part of the layer.
We get the following result:
Next, create another new layer and using Paint bucket tool (Fill) (G) Fill the layer with the color #EFEFEF. Place this layer under the layer with the model.
Paste the mask on the layer by clicking on the button. Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel, and apply the following filter: Filter – Render – Clouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds).
Set the blending mode of this layer to Overlay.
Create a new layer and fill it with black.
Apply filter: Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter – Noise – Add noise).
We get the following result:
Set the Fill of this layer to 62% and change the blending mode to Color dodge (Lightening the basics).
Create a new layer and place it at the very top of the layers panel. Choose a black brush from the Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set.
Use this brush to add black strokes.
Paste the mask on the layer by clicking on the button. Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel, and select soft round brush (B) black with an Opacity of 40%.
Paint over the mask to hide the extra areas on the layer. Then set the Fill (Fill) of this layer to 70%.
Create a new layer and select a brush from the Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set.
Use this brush to add strokes as shown below. The brush should be black with an Opacity of 50%.
Paste the mask on the layer, as we did before, and edit it with black soft brush (B) to hide extra areas.
Click on the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation).
Move the slider to the left to reduce Saturation (Saturation).
Now we need to create a new layer and select a soft round brush.
Use this brush to add colors as shown below (Opacity):
Set the blend mode for this layer to Color (Chromaticity).
Now we have to draw several diagonal lines. Each must be on a separate layer, since each layer will have its own parameters. For this we will use the tool Line tool (Line) (U) with Wight (Width) 5 px. Line color is # 00FF00. Set the blend mode for this layer to Color dodge (Lightening the basics).
The next line will be # FF00FE. Set the layer blending mode to Lighten (Replacing light).
Create a new layer and draw two new lines of the same colors as the previous ones.
Paste the mask into layers with lines by clicking the button. Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose a round soft brush (B) of black color.
We draw on the mask with the selected brush to hide the edges of the lines:
We draw on the mask using the Flat Curve Thin Stiff Bristles brush to hide the extra areas of lines:
We get the following result:
The next line should be # FF00FE. Set the blending mode of this layer to Darker Color (Dark color).
Create a new layer and draw two new lines of the following colors: # 00FFEE and # FF00A0. Set the blend mode for this layer to Color (Chromaticity).
Create a new line with color # A2FF00. Set the color blending mode to Overlay (Overlap).
The next line should be #BEBEBE. Set the Fill of this layer to 54% and change the blending mode to Color dodge (Lightening the basics).
Create a new layer and draw another three new lines with a width of 43 px. Set the blending mode of this layer to Overlay (Overlap).
We get the following result:
Paste the mask on the layer by clicking on the button. Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose a round soft brush (B) of black color.
Draw on the mask with the selected brush to hide wide lines, as shown below.
Activate Pen tool (Feather) (P), choose Shape layers (Layer-shape) mode Drawing (Free pen) and draw several triangles with the following colors: # 00FF00, # 49FFCE, # FF49D6.
We get the following result:
We are done!
