Create a sports poster in Photoshop

This lesson is dedicated to the Euro 2016 European Football Championship. The national team of France opened the UEFA Euro 2016 Championship against Romania.

In this lesson, you will learn how to create a poster for a sporting event in football in Photoshop using basic blending techniques.

This lesson is amazing in that you can add individual touches to the poster simply by replacing the abstract background, as well as the original images of a football player and a stadium. Thus, you can create a template for any sporting event that you like, for example, tennis, boxing, athletics, etc.

Step 1

Create a new working paper with the following dimensions of 1920x1080px. Open the original Rain texture. Move this Rain texture to our working paper. Apply scaling to the texture (CTRL + T). Change the blending mode for the Rain Textured layer to Overlap (Overlay) and also reduce Opacity (opacity) layer up to 50%.

Step 2

Now place the original image with the abstract wallpaper on our working paper, and also add the original image with the football stadium. Apply scaling to the stadium image, and then change the blending mode for the stadium layer to Multiplication (Multiply).

Step 3

Open the original image with football player Steven Gerrard. This image is paid, but, of course, you can replace it with any other player you like. You can even create a poster for another sporting event besides football. You can choose the subject of American football, tennis or even boxing.

Now we have to remove the background on the image with a football player. To remove the background, you can use one of the selection tools: Fast selection (Quick Selection Tool), Magic wand (Magic Wand Tool), Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool). If you want to get the perfect selection, then use the tool Pen (Pen Tool).

I will use the tool Fast selection (Quick Selection Tool) to highlight the player image. Set the brush size to 33px. Once you have copied the selected area to a new layer, then add a layer mask to correct the edges of the image if the selection was not good enough. Thus, using the layer mask, you will carry out a safe correction of the selected image. To hide unnecessary parts of the image, use a black brush inside the layer mask.

Step 4

Select the layer with the image of abstract wallpaper and the layer with the image of Steven Gerrard and using the transformation tool (CTRL + T), zoom in on the images, as well as Flip horizontally (Flip Horizontaly) highlighted images. Change the blending mode for the layer with Steven Gerrard to Light replacement (Lighten) Thus, we get a beautiful double exposure effect by overlaying two images.

Step 5

Open the original texture of Old Paper in Photoshop. Move this texture to our working paper. Rotate the texture, and then change the blending mode for the texture layer to Soft light (Soft Light), the opacity of the layer with a texture of 10%.

Step 6

Next, place the grunge texture on our working paper. Change the blending mode for the layer with the grunge texture to Overlap (Overlay).

Step 7

Now add the Dust texture to our working paper. Change the blending mode to Light replacement (Lighten) and also reduce Opacity (opacity) layer with texture up to 70%. To a layer with a dust texture, add a layer mask and with a black brush and an opacity of 35%, paint over the mask. Remove dark areas of the texture (highlighted in red), as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 8

Now add the Snow texture to our working paper. Change the blending mode to Lighter (Lighten Color) and also reduce Opacity (opacity) layer with texture up to 30%.

Step 9

Next, add a texture with Optical Flare to our working paper. Change the blending mode to Lightening (Screen). Add a layer mask to the layer with the optical flare and using a black brush, process the edges of the texture to create a smooth transition.

Step 10

Add Particle texture to our working paper. Change the blending mode to Lightening basics (Color Dodge), and also reduce Opacity (opacity) texture layer up to 25%

Step 11

Let’s go Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map (Adjustment Layer> Gradient Map). Set black and white gradient. Set the blending mode for this adjustment layer. Gradient Map (Gradient Map) on Soft light (Soft Light), and also reduce the opacity of the layer to 45%.

Next, go Adjustment Layer – Photo Filter (Adjustment Layer> Photo Filter), Select a Sepia filter, and also set Density (Density) by 50%.

Let’s go Corrective layer – Curves (Adjustment Layer> Curves). Install entrance (Input) 89, Output (Output) 73.

Let’s go Corrective layer – Brightness / Contrast (Adjustment Layer> Brightness / Contrast). Set the value Brightness (Brightness) at -10.

Finally, let’s go Corrective layer – Search colors (Adjustment Layer> Color Lookup). Select the FuturisticBleak setting.

Step 12

For those who do not have Photoshop version CS6 and adjustment layer Color search (Color Lookup) respectively, then you can use another adjustment layer Gradient Map (Gradient Map), let’s go Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map (Adjustment Layer> Gradient Map). Set the gradient colors to # 872f2f and # fbfde6. Set the blending mode for this adjustment layer. Gradient Map (Gradient Map) on Overlap (Overlay). And also add a correction layer. Photo filter (Photo Filter), color # a0c6d7, Density (density) 50%

Step 13

Create a merged layer from all visible layers. To do this, go to the topmost layer and press the keys (CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + E). To merged layer, apply filter Colour contrast (High Pass Filter) to enhance the sharpness of the entire image. So let’s go Filter – Other – Color Contrast (Filter – Other – High Pass), set a radius of 2. Change the blending mode for the merged layer to Overlap (Overlay) as well as install Opacity (Opacity) layer 50%.

You can also use the final image as a background for a football scoreboard. All you need is to download the free score board PSD file to create your sports scoreboard.

You can edit it by adding the names of the players, the score of the game, as well as who scored a goal, etc. at its discretion.

You can see the final result in the screenshot below. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
