In this tutorial, I will show you how to create an abstract poster with the help of several stock photos.
Step 1. Start by creating baselines for the triangle. We will use the tool Pen tool (Pen) (P), but before that let’s activate the ruler (CTRL + R), which will help us to create the shape of the correct shape. Install auxiliary lines, then take Pen tool (Feather) (P). Create the bottom line, then define the center and add sidelines. After that we create a contour stroke with a hard brush of 1 px.
Step 2. Remember that this triangle is just a basic contour. Next we will create something more interesting. To begin with, create some short lines along the contour of the triangle. You can place them in any direction, just make sure they are about the same size and follow the shape of a triangle. To better understand, look at the screenshot below.
Activate again Pen tool (Feather) (P). Now we will use it to create several different shapes for the triangle. Try to make them different. When finished, delete the base lines of the triangle.
Step 3. Take Eraser tool (Eraser) (E). He will help us to diversify the figures. Use it to create thin lines that look like cracks. If you have a graphics tablet, you can experiment with the pressure of the pen.
Step 4. Now create another triangle. This time it should be bigger, and the contour should be thicker. Repeat the previous step with a ruler to create a regular and even figure. After that, remove 1/3 of the circuit. In this place we will add abstract shapes.
Step 5. We continue to create new shapes. Do not repeat, show your creativity. New figures should be larger than the previous ones, this will give depth to our work. When finished, repeat the above process with the tool. Eraser tool (Eraser) (E).
Step 6. Add a new triangle filled with color inside the very first one. It will be the center point of the whole composition.
Step 7. Now let’s work as a tool. Brush tool (Brush) (B). Download the brushes and load them into Photoshop. With their help, we will create a grunge effect for the poster. You can also use this to focus attention in the center of the composition. We work with a brush around the smallest triangle.
Step 8. The inner part of the triangle is the most important and interesting place of the whole composition. We will work on it now. We clamp CTRL and click on the thumbnail of the layer with the central triangle to load its selection. On a new layer, we work with different brushes to create an interesting effect. To add diversity, duplicate (CTRL + J) the triangle and change its color to white. Then we create a new layer, load the selection of the white triangle and work with the brush already with it. Thanks to the selection, the brush will act only within the selected shape. Next, take Eraser tool (Eraser) (E) (soft and round) and erase to make some areas of the triangle darker.
Step 9. Download photos from the roots. Open it in Photoshop. Use the tool MagneticLasso Tool (Magnetic lasso) (L) to cut the necessary part. Selecting the root, do not try to create the perfect lines, now we just have to cut out what we need, and then use the eraser to get rid of the excess.
Step 10. Insert the root of the working paper. Place it near the middle triangle. Adjust the size, tilt, position (CTRL + T).
Step 11. Do not you think that the root of the general background looks somehow inharmonious? I think so too. To fix this, create a new layer above the root layer and apply a clipping mask for it (CTRL + ALT + G). Then take Brush tool (Brush) (B) black and working with it in the place where the root is in contact with abstract figures. This will create an effect as if it grows straight from the triangle.
Step 12. Repeat steps 9-11 two more times. We have to place three roots on our composition.
Step 13. Use the brush again. Choose any and work it around the root. Hold down the CTRL key and load the selection of one of the layers with the root. Activate the layer on which we worked with a brush, and erase the part that overlaps the root.
Step 14. Repeat step 13 on the other root. You do not need to do these manipulations for all the roots, in our case two will be quite enough.
Step 15. Let’s add some adjustment layers. Both are set to blend mode. Normal (Normal) and Opacity (Opacity) 100%. Make sure that the layer Gradient map (Gradient Map) with a black-white gradient located above the layer with a gray-white gradient map.
Step 16. A little color composition does not hurt. Activate the tool Single Row Marquee Tool (Horizontal selection) and create a selection anywhere. Then take Paint bucket tool (Fill) (G) and fill the selection with blue. Transform the line (CTRL + T) and place it so that it runs along the side of the central triangle.
Step 17. Duplicate (CTRL + J) a layer with a line twice. Move the first copy up a little, the second – down. Erase the line in some places lines to create a more interesting effect.
Step 18. Draw several low circles Opacity (Opacity) filled with the same color as the lines.
Step 19. Create a new layer and activate Brush tool (Brush) (B). Use a soft round brush to draw two circles above the previous ones. Set the layer blending mode to Soft light (Soft light).
Step 20. Before we begin to distort our composition in perspective, we will hide the layer with the right bottom line. This is necessary so that when transforming into perspective, we will not spoil it.
Step 21 Now create a new layer and merge it on all existing layers. Then we activate the transformation in perspective. Edit – Transform – Perspective (Editing – Transformation – Perspective) and moving the two lower nodes to the center. The lower part will become narrower, resulting in a distortion effect in perspective. Now the image looks much better.
Step 22 As a result of the transformation a small error was formed. The original image is visible on the sides (this is seen in the screenshot above). We do not need it. To fix, we hold down the CTRL and load the layer selection. Then go Select – Inverse (Selection – Invert). Next, take Paint bucket tool (Fill) (G) and fill the selection with white.
Step 23 Now you can make the blue line visible again. Move the layer with it to the very top of the layers palette and adjust it a bit (CTRL + T).
Step 24 Open the image with a hand in Photoshop. Via Magnetic Lasso Tool (Magnetic lasso) (L) cut the hand and transfer it to the working paper. To make the selection accurate and accurate, zoom in on the image.
Step 25. The hand looks somehow ordinary, let’s edit it a little. We use Lasso Tool (Lasso) (L), to select each finger and transform them so that they are at a distance from each other. Also use the tool Clone stamp tool (Stamp) (S) to correct some areas. Dodge (Clarifier) and Burn tool (Dimmer) (O) – the main tools that we will use in this step. The image below will help you correctly edit your hand.
Step 26. We have a hand in the center of the composition. We must find a suitable position for it in the center of the triangle.
Step 27. Now we have to create such an effect, as if the hand goes out of their central triangle. For this we take Pen tool (Pen) (P) and create a contour, convert the contour to the selection and on the new layer, which we place under the layer with the hand, fill it with black color. Selection does not remove. Invert it Select – Inverse (Selection – Invert). Activate the layer with the hand and remove the bottom part that goes beyond the triangle. When finished with this, delete the layer with the black triangle.
Step 28. At this stage, we can adjust the image a little more. Add small parts, several adjustment layers, transform something, erase unnecessary somewhere, etc.
Step 29. We are almost done. All we have to do is add a few background textures to make the composition more interesting. Load the textures and open them in Photoshop. Adjust their size, tilt and position (CTRL + T). Soft eraser (E) erasing the central part so that it does not overlap the triangular abstraction. Having added a pale yellow color, we will lighten the composition a little and make it more interesting and pleasant for the viewer.
And in the final add top and bottom of the strip.
