Create dynamic sports wallpaper in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create dynamic sports wallpapers in Photoshop. We will combine different textures, splashes, spots, particles into one whole picture. You will also learn the so-called non-destructive method of image processing, which will be useful to you in everyday tasks.

Step 1

Create a new file with a size of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Our wallpapers are designed for widescreen monitors.

Step 2

Create a new layer. Set foreground color to # 040916. Hit Alt + Backspace to fill the layer with the current color.

Step 3

Add a texture to make the background look more dynamic. The texture is imported directly to the working document as a smart object using the command File – Place (File – Post). Due to this, the imported image is automatically transformed into a smart object, to which we will be able to apply various filters with the ability to turn them off and adjust at any time.

Paste the texture on the document.

Step 4

Press Ctrl + T to activate the free transformation, grab one of the corners and rotate the texture 90 degrees counterclockwise. Or, after activating the transformation, click on the picture with the right mouse button and select Rotate 90 degrees CCW (Rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise).

Adjust the scale so that the texture completely fills the entire working canvas. When finished, press Enter to apply the transformation.

Step 5

Bleach the texture. Above the texture we add an adjustment layer. Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue/ Saturation (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue / Saturation). Use the slider to set Saturation (Saturation) at -100. Then we transform the adjustment layer into a clipping mask by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + G key combination or by pressing the special button at the bottom of the settings panel.

Step 6

Now we have to invert the texture, but since it is a smart object, you cannot do it directly. Double click on the thumbnail of the smart object in the layers panel to see its contents. Then press Ctrl + I or go Image – Adjustments – Invert (Image – Correction – Invert) to invert the color of the texture. After that, press Ctrl + S to save the result, and close the document with the contents of the smart object.

You should get something like this.

Increase texture visibility with an adjustment layer. Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Levels (Layer – New adjustment layer – Levels). Shift the gray slider to the left, as shown below.

Add a photo with green grass using the same command. Place (Post).

Step 10

Create a selection of the central part of the photo using Lasso Tool (L) (Lasso). Do not try hard to create the perfect shape of the selection, let it be something similar to what is shown in the screenshot below.

Step 11

Select the fragment and click on the button in the lower part of the layers panel. Add layer mask (Add layer mask) to add a mask according to the shape of the selection. You should get the result as shown below.

Step 12

Open the photo with buildings in Photoshop. On the layers panel, right-click on the layer and select Layer from Background (Layer from the background). Then select the building using any convenient selection method. I used Magic Wand Tool (W) (Magic Wand) in combination with Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) (Rectangular lasso).

We refine the selection using the command Select – Refine Edge (Allocation – Refine Edge). After the correction, click OK to confirm the changes.

Step 13

Add a mask according to the shape of the selection.

Select the side buildings. Click on the already added layer mask and fill the selected areas with black color to hide them.

Step 15

Before importing buildings to the main working document, we transform the layer into a smart object, so that we can freely transform it without losing quality. Right click on the layer and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object).

Step 16

Now move the building to the working paper. Adjust the scale and place it under the grass layer.

Step 17

Import the watercolor texture (Watercolors_Vol1 file – Watercolors_V1_1032.jpg) into the working document using the command Place (Post).

Rotate the texture as shown below.

Place the texture under the buildings.

Bleach the texture by applying an adjustment layer. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Double click on the smart object with watercolor texture. In the document that opens, press Ctrl + I to invert the colors. Save the result and close the document.

You should get this result.

Change layer blend mode to Screen (Lightening).

Open the photo with the girl and select it. Since the background is homogeneous, we can use the tool to highlight Magic Wand Tool (W) (Magic Wand) or team Select – Color Range (Highlight – Color range). You may need to refine the edge to get a tidier selection without unnecessary artifacts around the edges.

Add a mask according to the shape of the selection.

Convert the layer with the girl into a smart object.

We import the girl to the working paper and place it above the grass layer.

We write the word GAME using the Futura STD Extra Bold font. If you do not have this font, select another one with a rather wide lettering. Also on the panel Character (Character) customizable Kerning (Kerning).

Load the photo of the ball in Photoshop. Hide the background and convert the layer into a smart object.

Add a smart object with a ball to your working document. Adjust the size (Ctrl + T). Place the ball above the layer with the girl, blocking the original ball in the photo.

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to the ball and slightly adjust the brightness of the mid-tones. Do not forget to convert the adjustment layer into a clipping mask.

Open the photo with a football goal and select the front gate.

Create a mask from the selection, then convert the layer into a smart object.

Place the gate under the layer with the girl.

Add a new layer under the layer with the gate. Create a selection inside the frame of the gate and fill it with white to create something similar to the grid. Reduce the layer opacity to 50%.

Take the tool Line Tool (U) (Line) and draw the details of the frame.

We have an image with the silhouette of a goalkeeper. Since the background is completely black and the silhouette is white, we will set the layer blending mode to Screen (Lightening). This will completely remove the black color and leave only the white silhouette. You can take the same image or draw your own.

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) layer with the ball and reduce the size of the copy. We place it near the goalkeeper, as if he is trying to catch this ball.

We also have a photo of mountains with a white background. Via Magic Wand Tool (W) (Magic Wand) select the mountain, create a new layer and fill the selection with black. You can find a similar picture, or from scratch to draw in Photoshop.

Insert the created silhouette of the mountain on the working paper. Invert colors (Ctrl + I) and convert a layer into a smart object.

Rotate the shape 180 degrees and adjust the size. Duplicate it and place it under the building.

Insert the texture with paint stains (Spray Paint pack file – Media_Militia _-_ Spray_Paint_Textures_05.jpg) as a smart object. Place it above the text.

Transform the paint layer into a clipping mask for the text (Ctrl + Alt + G).

Then above the text we place the texture with the blot.

Double click on the blob layer thumbnail to open the smart object. Press Ctrl + I to invert the colors. Save and close the smart object.

Go back to the working paper and paste the copied texture under the layer with the girl.
