Festive vintage card in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create interesting text using wood, vintage and grunge textures to create a vintage look. As for the background, we will use a theatrical stage with a beautiful antique curtain. At the end of the lesson to create a vintage postcard, we will place the resulting scene inside the old photo frame.

So, in this lesson we are going to create in Photoshop an old postcard “Happy New Year”. In the Chinese horoscope, 2014 is the year of the wooden horse, so based on this, we are going to design a postcard.

Used materials:

Final image

Start with this old room as a background for our theatrical scene.

Apply Rectangular marquee tool (Rectangular area) to make the room taller. Highlight part of the wall and ceiling of the room and move them up. Select a part of the wall again and copy it to fill the empty space. Drain these two layers.

Apply CloneStamp (Stamp) to make the connection of two layers of the wall seamless.

On the new layer, add the effect of the sun’s rays, using one of the brushes “sun rays” (registration is required for downloading); set white overlay mode Overlay (Overlap), Opacity(Opacity) 30%.

Add adjustment layer Exposure(Exposure) with the following settings Exposure(Exposition): -1.08; Offset(Shift): 0.0000; GammaCorrection(Gamma Correction): 1.00. This will darken the image a bit.

Now let’s create the text 2014, using this wooden horse as a focus point.

Remove the bottom of the toy, as shown in the picture, and using copying wood, lengthen the toy.

On the new layer, add the numbers “014” to create 2014. For numbers, you can use the Intro font – a free font.

For numbers, apply a wood texture using a clipping mask — right-click on the texture and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask).

If you want to get different effects, you can use a different layer for each digit. Select a layer with a number and a layer with a clipping mask and convert them into a smart object or merge them. Open the layer style window of the new layer / smart object, and add the following layer styles. For embossing and texture figures, you can use patterns.

Do not forget to add using BrushTool (Brush) shadows for each digit. You should get a similar result.

Insert a rope in our document to hang our wooden composition. Apply several adjustment layers for the rope. Brightness / Contrast(Brightness / Contrast), Hue/Saturation(Hue / Saturation): ColorBalance(Color balance). Also add an effect to it. InnerShadow(Inner shadow).

Insert an image of another rope, as shown in the image below. For a better color combination, add adjustment layers. Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) and others.

I added a simple canvas flag that says “Happy New Year”, but you can use any texture you want. You can, for example, add wooden decorative flower shapes.

Now we have to add a shadow for the whole wooden composition. To do this, select all the layers of the wooden composition, duplicate and merge them. Place the resulting layer below all other layers and add an effect to it. DropShadow (Shadow).

For finalization, add a theater curtain, add an effect. DropShadow (Shadow).

To connect all the objects together, you can add GradientMap(Gradient map).

You can duplicate and merge all layers. To give a vintage look to the resulting layer, use the old photo frame. Place one copy below the image layer and one copy above the image and set the blending mode SoftLight(Soft light). If you want a torn effect, you can choose one of these images Torn Paper.
