Greeting card in Photoshop

Tuk-tuk-tuk! :) It’s time for a new lesson. It will be especially useful to those who want to make a gift to close people, but have not yet decided on the idea. Enough words. Let’s start work on the card!

Sources:

Step 1

Let’s start by creating a new document …. say, 450px wide and 540px high. Set the foreground color to # cb0862 and taking a tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool (G)), fill the background layer with this color. Name the first layer “Pink Background”.
So, once you’ve done this, download the Heart Pattern into your Photoshop. Create a new layer on top of the background. Use the tool again Fill (Paint Bucket Tool (G)) and this time set it to “Filling pattern“(Fill with Pattern). From the list of patterns, select” Hearts. “Name the layer” Hearts Background. “

Next, standing on the “Hearts Background”, go to the menu Layer styles (Layer Style). This can be done like this: Layer – Layer Styles – Blending Options (Layer – Layer Style – Blending Options) …. or double click with the right mouse button on the patterned layer.
Set the following settings for “Heart Background”:

Step 2

Now your image looks like this:

In this step we will add a little shine. Create a new layer on top of all the previous ones. Foreground color is set to white (#FFFFFF). Activate the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool (G)), the gradient type is linear, the color is from front to transparent. Then on the new layer that you just created, drag the gradient line diagonally from the upper left corner about 100-150px. For example:

Next, name the gradient layer “Shine 1” and also reduce the fill (Fill) to 40% in order to get a result similar to mine:

Step 3

Working with layers you can make adjustments to your work at any time. As an example, I will now replace the background pink color with # ba044a.

Create a new layer and place it above the “Pink Background” layer, then fill the new layer with color # ba044a and press Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) + E to merge it with “Pink Background”.

Go to the “Hearts Background” layer, then go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness \ Contrast (Layer – New Layer – Brightness / Contrast). Set the values: Brightness +15; Contrast +15. Now our background has changed and looks like this:

Create a new layer on top of all the others. Set foreground color to #cd344f , and background plan on #650a33. Activate the tool Gradient ( Gradient Tool (G)), gradient type – radial; color – from foreground to background. Draw a gradient line as shown below:

Name the resulting layer “Page”

Step 4

Now it’s time to work with the Pen Tool.
So activate Pen (Pen Tool) set it to the “Path” mode (Paths) and create the shape of a folded corner of the page. When you’re done, right-click on the contour – from the submenu, select “To form a selected area“(Make Selection), like this:

Press key Delete . Create another new layer above the “Page” layer. Right-click on this new layer, select in the menu “Create clipping mask“(Create Clipping Mask), set the blending mode to”Multiplication“(Multiply).

Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool (B)). From the set of brushes, choose a standard round rigid brush; about 50 pixels in size. Also, make sure the foreground color is # 650a33. Now draw a little with the brush the bottom of the page, like this:

Currently, the drawing looks a bit rough … isn’t it? We can fix this with a fairly simple method: Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur), set the blur value to about 27 pixels .. The result should look like this:

Step 5

When you are satisfied with the result, select the “Page” layer and the blur layer and merge them into one (Ctrl (Cmd) + E).
At this stage you should have five layers: “Pink background”, “Hearts background”, “Brightness \ Contrast”, “Shining 1”, “Page”. If you have succeeded – continue the lesson!

Create a new layer and place it at the top. Convert it to a clipping mask for a layer (Create Clipping Mask) “Page”. Go to “Layer Style” and select “Stroke“(Stroke); position -” inside “(Inside); size – 8 pix. Color – #1d0610. Next, go to “Gradient overlay“(Gradient Overlay) and set the following settings:

Translator’s Note: Before moving to the “Layer Style” fill the new layer with any color. Set the “Fill” value to “0”. Also, you can adjust the opacity value when working with “Gradient Overlay” to your own taste.

Activate the tool “Magic wand (Magic Wand Tool (W)), set a tolerance of about 10, make sure that the checkbox is checked “Smoothing” (Anti-Aliasing) and uncheck “Sample from all layers (Sample All Layers). Then click on the “Page” layer in the layers palette to make it active. Make a click Magicoh chopsticksOh (Magic Wand Tool (W)), inside the document. You should get this selection:

Create another new layer (of course above all others) … and convert it to a clipping mask for the “Page” layer. Switch to Layer style (Layer Style) and add “Stroke“(Stroke); position -” inside “(Inside); size – 4 pixels; type of stroke -” gradient “. Use gradient to stroke from step # 1 (golden gradient).

Step 6

In this step, we will draw a wrapped corner of the postcard.
Set foreground color to #cea051. Activate the tool Pen (Pen Tool (P)) in “Layer layer“(Shape Layers). Create a new layer on top of all the others. Draw a curved corner like this on a new layer:

Give a name to the new layer, for example – “Page Flip”. Activate the Gradient Tool (G) and set these color settings:

Then, create a new layer above the “Page Flip” layer, right-click on it and select from the submenu “Create Clipping Mask” (Create Clipping Mask). Using the Gradient Tool, drag a gradient line like the example below.

Translator’s Note: type of gradient when drawing, set either “Mirror” or “Linear” (to your own taste).

Step 7

After adding a gradient, the page looks like this:

In my opinion, the corner turned out to be too dark. This can be corrected by adding an adjustment layer “Brightness \ Contrast“(Brightness / Contrast). Go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness \ Contrast (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness / Contrast). Set the values - Brightness: +31; Contrast: +19. This adjustment layer should be at the very top of all layers, convert it into a Clipping Mask to the Page Flip layer (right click on the layer — select Create Clipping Mask in the submenu).
After correction you will get a similar result:

Step 8

I think we are a great team and have achieved a great result! = D
We continue! Now add the shadows from the curved corner to the main page.
Create a new layer and place it between the “Shine 1” and “Page” layers. New layer name “Page Shadow”.

Blend mode set to Multiplication (Multiply). Activate the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool); gradient type – Linear (Linear Gradient); fill type – From foreground to transparent; foreground color – #382220. Standing on the “Page Shadow” layer we create a selection along the outline of the “Page” layer (“Ctrl“+ click on the thumbnail of the” Page “layer.) Drag the gradient line from the top left corner of the selection to the bottom right.

Standing on a layer with a gradient, go to Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur). Set the value to blur: 10-20 pix

Now your image looks like this:

Step 9

Now we will add the shadow of the curved corner of the page. Create a new layer. Place it under the Page Flip layer. Name the new layer Inner Shadow. Convert the “Inner shadow” layer to the clipping mask to the “Page” layer. You will have this scheme:

Set the blending mode of the Inner Shadow layer to Multiplication (Multiply). Activate the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool). The settings use the same ones that we applied in the previous step for the shadow. Drag the gradient line as shown in the image:

Step 10

Now my favorite part of the work begins – we will decorate a postcard!
Set Primary Color # 330a1c. Activate the tool Pen (Pen Tool (P)) in mode Layer layer (Shape Layers). Create a new layer and place it above the “Page” layer (as a clipping mask). Using the tool Pen create an abstract beautiful form (refer to the figure below):

Set the blending mode of this layer. Multiplication (Multiply). Reduce the value “Fill“(Fill) to 45% Name the layer “Pocket”. Download and install the Flora pattern in Photoshop. Go back to the “Pocket” layer. Go to the menuLayer style“(Layer Style). Add the following parameters:

Step 11

So we added the effect of fabric (silk) to our pocket. Now, your postcard should look something like this:

Add a pocket more silky look. For this we will use adjustment layers. Press combination Ctrl (Cmd) + Click on the “Pocket” layer icon. Then go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness \ Contrast (Layer – New Layer – Brightness / Contrast); Settings – Brightness: +nineteen and Contrast: +18.

Next, once again create a selection of the layer “Pocket” and go the same way but use the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) with these settings:

Repeat the selection a third time and go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue \ Saturation (Layer – New Layer – Hue / Saturation). Set the value of “Saturation” to +thirty.
Create the selection again, and add another adjustment layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation), but this time change the value of “Brightness” (Lightness) to -eleven. Lower the opacity (opacity) of this layer to 70%.

Step 12

In this step, we will “attach” the gold bezel to the silk pocket.
Create a new layer above the last adjustment layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation), which we added in the previous step. On the layer diagram, it will be placed in this order:

Create a selection of the layer “Pocket” (as was done earlier). Now go to Editing – perform a stroke (Edit – Stroke). In the submenu, set the parameters: width – 8 pixels; location – “center” (сenter). Click on “OK”.
Next, go to Layer style (double click on the stroke layer) and set the following parameters:

So, now you can name the new layer “Golden rim pocket”. And we again overcame the next stage! Hooray!

Step 13

As the saying goes: “Fun time, and the shadow of the hour …” :). Create a new layer and place it above the “Page” layer. Give a name to this layer “Pocket Shadow”. Set the blending mode of the layer to Multiplication (Multiply) and lower the Opacity to 60% Set foreground color to # 330a1c. Create a selection of the “gold rim pocket” layer and fill it with the previously set color.

Deselect and go to Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur). Set the blur value to about 10 to 20 pixels.
Now the image should look something like this:

Step 14

Let’s draw a piece of paper!
Set Primary Color # f7d29e and activate the tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool). Be sure to set the mode for this tool to Layer layer (Shape Layers) – this is very important! Create a new layer on top of the “Page” layer and draw a piece of paper on it, I mean, a rectangle like this:

Name this layer “Paper Sheet” and add some layer styles to it:

Step 15

Pay attention to the part of the sheet which is in the pocket. In my opinion, she looks too bright and distracts a lot of attention. We will now add a correction layer to fix this.

Create a selection of paper (“Ctrl“+ click on the” Paper Sheet “layer icon.) Go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue \ Saturation (Layer – New Layer – Hue / Saturation). Set these values to Saturation: -42; Brightness (Lightness): -45. Now the whole sheet looks much darker, but we want this effect to be applied only to the hidden corner.

To do this, stand on the layer Hue / Saturation, which we just added. Set foreground color to # 000000 (the black). Create a selection of the “Pocket” layer and invert it (Selection – Inversion (Select – Inverse)).

Activate the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) and fill the selection with black color (on the mask of the layer Hue \ Saturation). Now the layer map looks like this:

Create a selection of the hidden corner.

Now create another adjustment layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and enter the following parameters: Saturation: -36 and Brightness (Lightness): +25 . Good! Now your layer palette should look like this:

Step 16

By this step we got the following result:

Let’s add to the list of lines on which we place the text.
Set foreground color to # daa449 and activate the tool Line (Line Tool) (U)) and set the line thickness to 2 pixels. Create a new layer and draw lines on it:

Name this layer “Stitches”, set the blending mode Multiplication (Multiply) and lower Fill (Fill) to 65%

Step 17

In this step we will add the shadow of the sheet of paper.
Create a new layer on top of the “Page” layer (like a clipping mask). Set the foreground color to #330a1c. Create a selection of a sheet of paper and fill it on the new layer with the selected color.

Name the new layer “Shadow of a sheet of paper”. Set the blending mode Multiplication (Multiply) and lower the fill (Fill) to 50% Deselect. Switch to Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) (blur value 2-5 pixels.). Next Click a combination Ctrl + T to go to the transformation mode. Change the shape of the shadow so that it is visible from both sides of the sheet.

Step 18

The sheet is ready and now we can write our congratulations (or wishes). To do this, create a new layer above the “Stitches” layer. Download and install the font “Jellyka” (you can of course take any other font). Activate the tool Text (Type Tool (T)) and write your message. When it is ready, click Ctrl (Cmd) + T and turn the text so that it “lay” on the lines (you can also use the tool Move (Move Tool) for easy text placement).

Set the blending mode of the text layer to Multiplication (Multiply). You can also make a light correction of the text (its color and brightness) by adding a correction layer to it. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). To do this, create a text selection and go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue \ Saturation (Layer – New Layer – Hue / Saturation). I set the following parameters: Hue: -6; Saturation: +29.

Step 19

I want to decorate the work with a gold medallion in the shape of a heart.
Download from the starting materials the shape of the heart. Create a new layer on top of all the previous ones. Set foreground color to # b58d4e and draw a shape for the future locket.

Step 20

Now add to the layer with the blank for decoration Layer styles (Layer Style):

Deep breath! And we continue! : D

Step 21

Layer layer name “Golden Heart”.
Then duplicate this layer and hide the copy (we still need it). Clear layer style. Above the Golden Heart layer, create a new layer. Then hold down the key Ctrl(Cmd) and click on the empty new layer and the “Golden Heart” layer, so both of them are both highlighted, like this:

Ok now click Ctrl (Cmd) + E, to merge them … this is how we get rid of layer styles, while maintaining their visual effects … :)
Now our layer is again without a name, so double click on it to rename it to “Golden Heart”.

Next, go to Editing – Transform – Flip Horizontally (Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontally). Then go to layer style and add an effect to it. Shadow (Drop Shadow), like this:

It remains to add a small touch! Activate the tool Sharpness (Sharpen Tool). Choose from a set of soft round brush size of about 60px, set mode (mod): normal (normal); intensity (strength): 25% Please note that there should NOT be a checkbox in front of “Sample All Layers”. Brush along the contour of the heart. Here’s what we got:

Step 22

Open the image “Link”. Save it to your computer. Open this image in a new document in Photoshop.
Make sure that the background in the image “Link” is transparent.
Switch to Editing – Define a brush (Edit – Define Brush). Give the name of the new brush “Link”. Click OK.

Go to the document with the postcard. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool (B)) and at the end of the list, select our new “Link” brush. Go to the brushes panel and set the following settings:

Now create a new layer and place it under the “Golden Heart” layer. Then, activate the tool Pen (Pen Tool), set it to Circuit (Paths) and draw the shape (path) of the chain. When the circuit is ready, right click on it and select Outline the contour (Stroke Path). Do NOT select the Simulate Pressure checkbox.

You should have a similar result:

Step 23

Add our chain of golden look.
Right-click on the “Golden Heart” layer (the original is hidden) and select Copy layer style (Copy Layer Style). Then go back to the layer with the chain and right-click on it, select – Paste style layer (Paste Layer Style). Here’s what happened:

Do not forget that the chain also casts a shadow. Thus, we just do the same thing as before – we create a new layer on top of the “Chain” layer, and then select two layers and merge them into one (Ctrl (Cmd) + E) (see step number 21 “). Go to the Layer Style and add Shadow (Drop Shadow):

Step 24

Let’s make the chain brighter. To do this, add a correction layer. Brightness \ Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) (as a clipping mask for the “Chain” layer). Settings for adjustment layer – Brightness (Brightness): +35, Contrast (Contrast): +35.

Step 25

Finishing touches = D
Create a new layer on top of all others, and name it “Glitter.” Set the layer to mode Lightening basics (Linear Dodge) and lower the fill (Fill) to 23%. Set the main color to #FFFFFF (white); select a standard soft round brush (brush (B)) with a size of about 30 pixels. Put a dot on the medallion in the lightest part, like this:

In my opinion it was very cute!
You can also add a bit of sharpness to the whole picture. To do this, create a copy of all layers.

Translator’s Note: To create a copy of all the layers, go to the top layer and press the key combination “Shift + Ctrl + Alt + E”

Then go to Filter – Sharpening – Sharpening (Filter – Sharpen -Sharpen). If the result seems rude, lower the value. Fill (Fill) up to 40% – 50%.

We are done! I am 100% sure that this card will cause the most positive emotions among your loved ones!
