How to create a layout (MockUp) cans of soda in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a mockup of soda cans. We will create the basic shape of the jar using vector shapes, set up Gradient (Gradient) and with its help we will give the bank a metallic effect. And also draw water droplets and using Smart Objects (Smart object) insert images and transform our layout (Mockup) into an easily editable template. Thus, you will be able to present your design product, repeatedly using a ready-made template.

Note translator: such layouts (Mockup) like this one, it is very convenient to use for design purposes. In just a couple of clicks, you set up a smart object, often simply inserting the finished image, and get the look of the final product.
The final result.

Material for the lesson:

Step 1. Open a new document in Photoshop and use the suggested settings.

Below you can see all the shapes of the elements that we need to create, with their name and location in the layers palette.

Let’s start creating the base of the can. Use the tool Rectangle (Rectangle tool) and its settings in the top options panel. Draw the first rectangle with the size of 568×1124 pixels and name it Middle 1. Create another rectangle 568 pixels wide and 1086 pixels high and give it a name Middle 2.
See the settings and order of the layers in the screenshot below.

Step 2. To create the top shape, we will work with the tool. Pen (Pen Tool) mode Layer Figure (Shape). Draw the left part of the shape as in the screenshot below and name this layer. Top shape 2.

Then using the tool Outline selection (Path Selection), select the created shape and, holding the Alt key + left click, drag the duplicated shape on the same layer. As soon as the duplicated figure is ready, we will give it the correct position. Press the key combination Ctrl +T, right-click and select an option Flip horizontally (Flip Horizontal). Arrange the shape as shown in the screenshot.

Step 3. Next we are going to create an upper jut canister. To do this, use the tool. Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool).
The settings are as follows:
Radius (Radius) – 5 pixels.
Preset size (Fixed Size) – 468pix. width and 25pix. height
Position the created shape as shown below and name this layer Top shape 1.

Step 4. To create the bottom of the jar, we will use the method that was used in step 2 to create the top shape. That is – to draw the lower figure we will work with the tool Pen (Pen Tool) mode Layer Figure (Shape). Draw the left part of the bottom shape as in the screenshot below and name this layer Bottomom Shape.

At the moment, our bank has this form. It will be more convenient to give the shapes the color of shades of gray in order to better distinguish all the elements.

Note translator: I advise you to keep this screenshot and open Photoshop in order to properly select the colors for each shape, this is important. Use the pipette and take the colors from the layer thumbnails.

Step 5. Now we are going to add light effects (glare) on the bank in order to revive it and make it look more real. To do this, activate the layer Middle 1,and double-clicking on the layer, bring up the layer style settings window. There select option Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) and use the suggested settings.

Since we created this gradient manually, it would be wise to save it for the future. To do this, in the gradient editing window, you can click Save (Save), choose a suitable name for your gradient and save it on your computer. And you can just press the button New (New) and this gradient will appear in the list of gradients in Photoshop.

Step 6. Activate the layer Middle 2 and reduce it Fill (Fill) at 0%. In layer styles, apply the same gradient as the previous shape, that is, the one you created and saved in step 5.

As you can see in the screenshot below, the author edits the gradient a little compared to the original, previously created. This is necessary so that when adding graphic elements of soda, we get a more realistic result. You can still not edit this gradient by adding graphics, you can go back and adjust.

Note translator: Sometimes, based on the color and saturation of the images you add to the design of the drink, you will have to adjust the gradient settings a bit, for example, Opacity or Blend Mode.

Step 7. To layer Top Shape 2 we will apply the following layer styles:
Inner shadow (Inner Shadow)

Then create a new layer. Shift + Ctrl + N and name it Top Gradient. Using the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool), create a selection that will cover part of the top layer shape Shape 2. Then activate the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool), in the top options panel, click on the preview in the gradient editor to select the gradient you created in the previous steps.
Apply the selected gradient along the entire length, as shown below:

Once you have applied the gradient, invoke the Free Transform key combination. Ctrl + T, then right-click and select an option Deformation (Warp).
Manually change the layer with the gradient, focusing on the contour of the layer Top Shape 2. Change this layer overlay mode to Overlap (Overlay), as well as apply a clipping mask by clicking the right mouse button and selecting the option Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask).

Using tool Pen (Pen Tool) draw a shape like in the screenshot, so we add a highlight. Name this layer Light left.

Change this layer overlay mode to Overlap (Overlay) and at the bottom of the layers palette click the button Add layer mask (Add Layer mask). Make this mask active, select the tool. Brush (Brush Too), put the black color (# 00000) and hide the part of the glare on the mask, as shown in the screenshot.

There are several different ways to achieve the same result, but this is the fastest and easiest way to control the accuracy of the desired effect. Use the brush, taking into account that the black brush hides the layer on the mask, and the white zone on the mask is what is shown on the layer.
Once the flare is ready, duplicate it, flip horizontally, as you did in the previous steps, and position the copy as shown in the screenshot.

Now using the tool Rectangle (Rectangle tool) create a new shape with these settings:
Preset size (Fixed Size) – 540pix. width and 7pix. height
Color – white (#FFFFFF)
Name this layer Overlay and apply the same blend mode to it – Overlap (Overlay).

Then, add a layer mask to this layer and, just as before, process a part of the shape with a black brush, hiding the glare where it appears the least. Also apply a layer style to this layer. Shadow (Drop Shadow) with the settings listed below.

Step 8. Now we come to work with the layer Top Shape 1. PApply layer styles to it.

After applying the gradient, add some details. It is necessary to load the selection of this figure. To do this, select the layer Top Shape 1 and click the left mouse button on the thumbnail of the vector mask with the key pressed Ctrl. After these actions, we automatically get a selection of this shape. Now create a new layer. Shift + Ctrl + N and name it Overlay and apply the same blend mode to it – Overlap (Overlay). Activate the tool Brush (Brush) white color of 40 pixels Opacity (Opacity) 35% and process this layer as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 9. Select layer Bottom shape apply the following layer styles – Inner shadow (Inner Shadow) and Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay).

Then create a new layer and name it. Bot gradient. Using the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool), create a selection that will cover part of the layer and apply our custom gradient to it, which you have already created.

Duplicate the created layer and place the copy in the layers palette above the layer Bot gradient and place it like in the screenshot. Scale the double with the command Ctrl + T – Zoom (Scale).

Now select the first one immediately, then the second layer in the same way, from the newly created ones, call the Free Transform with the key combination Ctrl + T, then right-click and select an option Deformation (Warp). Deform the layers by giving them a similar shape as in the screenshot.

Once you reach the desired shape, select both layers: Bot gradient and copy it, and right click to select the option Merge layers (Merge Layers). You will have one merged layer. Change this layer overlay mode to Hard light (Hard Light), as well as apply a clipping mask by clicking the right mouse button and selecting the option Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask).

Now create a new layer. Shift + Ctrl + N and name it Overlay and apply the same blend mode to it – Overlap (Overlay). Decrease Opacity (Opacity) of this layer to 70%. Activate the tool Brush (Brush) white color of 40 pixels Opacity (Opacity) 50% and draw a new element as shown in the screenshot.

Now activate the tool Rectangle (Rectangle tool) is black (# 000000) and use the settings below to set its exact dimensions. Name this layer Ligne shadow and set it overlay mode Multiplication (Multiply). Decrease Opacity (Opacity) of this layer to 20%.

Then add a layer mask, select it, and with a black brush on the mask, hide the left and right parts of the shape to achieve the effect, as shown below:

Step 10. In this step, we will add a shadow and reflection for our soda can. Create a new layer and place it below the layer. Bottom shape. Name the new layer Shadow soda.
Using the tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool), create a shape such as in the screenshot. This form should have a width slightly less than the bottom of the jar. Fill the selection with black using the tool Fill (Paint Bucket) and set the layer blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply).

Now go to the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur), set in the settings Radius (Radius) 2.0 pixels. And again Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur), set Angle (Angle) 0, and Bias (Distance) 100 pixels.
Then place a layer with a shadow, relative to the jar, as shown in the screenshot.

Now select the layer in the layers palette Bottom shape. Duplicate this layer, press the key combination Ctrl +T, right-click and select an option Flip Vertically (Flip Vertical). Place this layer right below the layer. Shadow soda and apply a layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow).

Then add a layer mask, select it, and hide the areas with the black brush on the mask, as shown below:

Step 11. In this step, we will create condensate in the form of large drops of water. This will refresh the design of our can and will look very impressive. We will first create a new folder on top of all layers and name it. Water. Inside the new folder, create a vector shape with the tool Ellipse (Ellipse), using the settings specified in the screenshot below. Fill (Fill) reduce this layer to 0%.

Then we will add a layer style to the created shape.

Add a layer mask to the drop drop layer. We will work on the mask to create a soft drop of transparency. Activate the tool Brush (Brush) black (# 000000) size of 40 pixels Opacity (Opacity) 25% and work on the mask to get the result approximately as in the screenshot.

Using tool Pen (Pen Tool) create two white shapes (#FFFFFF), as shown in the screenshot below. Blend mode for these shapes put Overlap (Overlay) and Opacity (Opacity) 75%.

For each layer with a glare, add a layer mask and hide the areas indicated in the screenshot.

Step 12. After you have created a drop, select all the layers in the group and merge them into one layer by pressing the right mouse button and selecting the option Merge layers (Merge Layers). After that, change this layer overlay mode to Linear light (Linear Light).
Thus, when we start copying a layer with a drop, we will work with fewer layers, which makes the file smaller and the work easier.

Now duplicate the drop layer as many times as you need, while changing the size of the other drops using Free transformation (Free transform) and arranging them randomly. See the screenshot below for an example.
Before merging and rasterization of layers with water drops, you can create a separate document, move a folder with water drops into it for future use, with the possibility of scaling without loss in quality, since the drop is created from vector shapes. Then save this file on your computer.

Step 13. Now let’s color our soda can. The author chose a green color 76B51C,You choose the color according to your needs and design.
Create a new layer above the layer. Middle 1 and using the tool Rectangle (Rectangle tool) draw a rectangle with the specified dimensions as in the screenshot. Name this layer YOUR DESIGN HERE! This is the layer where we apply our basic design using Smart object (Smart Objec).

Now standing on this layer, right-click and select the option Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object). A little later, you will learn about using a smart object.

Select the layer with the smart object and slightly correct the shape with Ctrl + T Warp (Warp), as shown in the screenshot, then right-click and select the option Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask).

Then create a new layer above the layer. Top gradient and again with the tool Rectangle (Rectangle tool) draw a rectangle with the specified dimensions as in the screenshot. Name this layer YOUR DESIGN HERE TOP. And also right-click and select an option. Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object).

Again, select the layer with the second smart object and slightly correct the shape using Ctrl + T Warp (Warp), relative to layer Top Shape 2, then move this layer under the layer Top gradient and a clipping mask will automatically apply to it.

Step 14. Now select the layer YOUR DESIGN HERE! Double click on the smart object thumbnail and a new file will open in front of you, the contents of which will correspond to your smart object. Here you can create your own design on several layers or use the ready-made design of our can, which can be downloaded here.

Note translator: According to this link, the design of the already merged layers, but if you create your own, then inside
You can create a design with a separate layer for each element in a smart object, just like in a regular document, so that you can easily change and edit images and text based on your needs.

Once your design inside the smart object is ready, click Ctrl + S, to save changes. After that, you can close the file that opened after double-clicking on the smart object and look at the main document that your design is now present on the soda bank, taking into account all the highlights and shadows.
Now do the same with the second smart object. YOUR DESIGN HERE TOP. Double click on the smart object thumbnail and a new file will open in front of you, where you can create your own design or use the one suggested in the archive as before.

We’ve finished creating an amazing soda can that can be used as a mockup. With the help of smart objects you can easily change the design of the can, applying to it any images and text. Finally, the author added a slightly blurred background so that the main focus was on the bank, and it looked like a real one.
