Make a poster from a photo in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we’ll turn portrait photography into an illustration with mixed gradients and textures.

Final result:

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop (Ctrl + N) with a size of 1000×1500 pixels in RGB mode with a resolution of 72 pixels / inch. Double-click on the background layer while holding Alt to unlock it. Apply a style to the background layer. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay): Mode – Normal, Style – Linear.

Step 2

Open the photo of the girl in Photoshop.

Separate the girl from the background in any convenient way and transfer it to the main document.

Step 3

Tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U) Create a circle with color # 5A5281 behind the girl.

Step 4

Select a circle (hold down Ctrl and click on the layer thumbnail).

Invert the selection (Ctrl + Shift + I) and tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) (E) erase part of the girl’s layer, as shown below.

Reduce the Fill of the circle with a circle to 9%.

Step 5

Create three copies of the circle (Ctrl + J) and resize them in the mode Freetransformation (Ctrl + T). The first copy needs to be reduced, will change color and filling. The remaining two copies must be larger than the original. Color and shading are shown in the screenshot.

Add a masks go to two large circles and select a soft brush:

On the mask, hide the bottom of the circles.

Step 6

Select the girl’s layer and discolor it (Ctrl + Shift + U). Add a mask and choose a soft brush with 20% opacity.

Partially rub the girl’s hair.

Set the girl’s blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply).

Step 7

Create a copy of the girl layer (Ctrl + J) and set the blending mode for it Overlap (Overlay). Choose soft brush white color and on the mask copy of the girl’s layer, restore hair.

Step 8

Create a new layer and select soft. brush with 30% opacity.

Draw white spots:

Create clippingmask (Ctrl + Alt + G).

Reduce layer fill to 82%.

Step 9

Create a new layer and fill it with # 2B3B77.

Create clippingmask (Ctrl + Alt + G).

Reduce the opacity to 96% and set the blending mode Brightshine (Vivid Light).

Step 10

Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves).

Step 11

Create a new layer and fill it with # 000014.

Set the blending mode to An exception (Exclusion).

Step 12

Create a new layer and use a soft brush to paint the girl with # 1F3C78.

Set the blending mode Replacementbright (Lighten)

Create another layer and use a soft brush with 70% opacity to draw a white spot.

Add a mask and erase part of the white spot on the right side.

Set the blending mode Dottedshine (Pin Light).

Step 13

Now we need to adjust the brush. Open up panelbrushes (F5) and configure it like this:

Scattering (Scattering):

Broadcast (Transfer):

Create a new layer and draw dots with the color # FFB9BD.

Add a mask to layer with dots and select soft brush with 15% opacity.

Erase some points:

Step 14

Create a new layer, enlarge the brush that we set up in the previous step and draw large dots with the color # C99990.

Reduce the layer’s fill to 57% and set the blending mode. Dottedshine (Pin Light).

Step 15

Tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) (U) create a rectangle as shown in the screenshot.

Reduce the fill of the rectangle to 0% and apply the style Overlaygradient (Gradient Overlay): Mode – Spot Light.


Step 16

Rasterize the rectangle layer via the context menu. In mode Freetransformation (Ctrl + T) tilt the layer.

Create two copies of the layer and slide them as shown in the screenshot.

For each layer with a slanting glow, add a mask and erase the edges.

Step 17

Place all layers with inclined auroras into a group (Ctrl + G). Rasterize the group (Ctrl + E) and apply a filter to the resulting layer. Contoursharpness (Filter> Sharpen> Unsharp Mask) (Filter> Sharpen> Unsharp Mask).

Step 18

At the end of the lesson, create a correction layer. Curves (Curves) for the whole illustration.
