In this lesson you will learn how to create a glossy magazine cover.
I usually use InDesigne for these purposes, but today we will only manage with Photoshop.
When creating the cover design, pay special attention to the details and artistic aspects of the work. This may take a certain amount of time. And to make it easier for you to cope with the task, I will help you.
Step 1. Create a new document in the size of 8.5-11 inches, 300dpi (for printing), RGB (you can change the mode to CMYK after you finish the work). Start with a radial gradient by double-clicking on the background layer to activate the menu. Layer style (Layer style), then go to Gradient overlay (Gradient overlap).
Gradient color numbers:
Step 2. Now we need the Knoll Light Factory plugin (The Knoll Light Factory plugin is designed to create light effects, mostly glare – reflections from bright light sources, for example, from the Sun. Such effects can be used to create logos, other text effects, to enhance photos, etc. d.), apply it to the gradient layer and change it blending mode (overlay mode) on Screen (Lightening) with an opacity of 21%.
Note: You can use the image of the light effect from the archive.
Open a photo of the city from the archive and place it above the layer to which the filter was applied. Change blending mode (overlay mode) on Soft light (Soft light).
Step 3. Open the image Stock illustration: Planet and place it above the layer with the city. Soft big round tool Eraser (Eraser) (E) erase the edges. Change blending mode (overlay mode) on Screen (Lightening).
Step 4. Duplicate the layer with the radiance that we created using the filter, and place the copy above the layer with the planet. Apply Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gauss) with a radius of 5 pixels, opacity (opacity) – 83%. Make sure that blending mode (overlay mode) is set to Screen (Lightening).
Step 5. Now we will generate clouds in Photoshop to make the background softer. Create a new layer and fill it with black. Apply Filter – Render – Clouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds). Large round soft brush erase the top of the clouds.
Change blending mode (overlay mode) on Soft light (Soft light) with opacity 35%.
Step 6. Create a new layer using Elliptical Marquee Tool (Oval selection) (M) draw a round selection and fill it with yellow color # fbc531.
Apply filter Gaussian blur (Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 114 pixels. Reduce the opacity to 45%.
Step 7. Open up Model Face Handsome, using Pen tool (Pen) (P), we cut out the model.
After that, right-click on the contour and select Load path as selection (Create selection from contour).
Copy (CTRL + C) model and paste (CTRL + V) on the working document. Layer above all previous ones.
Using the Brush Border Pack -27, on the new layer draw scratches and scuffs. I used brush number 15.
Using a big soft Eraser tool (Eraser) we erase around the edges, reduce the opacity (opacity) to 72% -82%. Duplicate the layer or draw a new scratch.
Step 8. Open the Stock illustration: Planet again and place it over the scratched layer. Big Eraser erase the center of the image.
Change blending mode (overlay mode) on Screen (Lightening).
Step 9. Now add white shiny lines to make our cover look more impressive. Create a new layer using Rectangular marquee tool (Rectangular selection) (M) create a selection. Fill it with a white to transparent gradient.
Erase the edges of the gradient.
Change blending mode (blend mode) gradient on Overlay (Overlap). Turn the (CTRL + T) gradient and position it behind the model. Duplicate the layer several times and place it in different places.
Add an adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Color Balance (Layer – New adjustment layer – Color balance).
Step 10. Now we will work with the text.
However, before that, we need to make a “grid” of guides, which will give an idea of how the text on the cover will be located. So, on each side we retreat by 0.25 inches and in these places we have guides, which will become a border for us, beyond which the text should not crawl out.
Now let’s take the output (the term output is often used to refer to the title of the publication). For the title, the author chose to use the type font Helvetica Inserat Roman (for headings it is always better to use plain and readable fonts). The author placed the title between the model and the background. Firstly, this way we do not overlap the head, and secondly, we create the effect of depth.
Further, the author has created a few guides, which greatly help in aligning the text and giving style.
Under the title are the publication date of the publication and a small slogan that describes the purpose, what this magazine is focused on.
Tip: before doing the actual placement of the text on the cover, do a little research on this topic for yourself, see what style other magazines use. And inspiration does not pass you by.
Step 11. Let’s create headings of stories, which in theory should be placed in our magazine.
A. Main story. Here I used a large font to focus the reader’s view.
B. The second story. Here I used a fine print and placed the heading in a translucent rectangle.
C. Here I used the fine print for less important articles.
Step 12. And the last thing we do is add a barcode. For this we use Free Vector Barcode Graphics.
You can also play with the color settings to get different design options.
That’s all. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and learned something new for yourself.
