Making a pumpkin flashlight in Photoshop

October 31 will be a terrible holiday “Halloween”! What a holiday without a pumpkin?

Materials for the lesson:

Step 1. Create a new document size 1400 * 900, fill with black color, select the tool “Gradient (Gradient Tool) and fill with a radial gradient, from brown to black, with the tool “MoveMaking a pumpkin flashlight in Photoshop (Move Tool) pull out the two guides, name the layer “background”.

Step 2. Open the image with the pumpkin and in any way convenient for you, separate the pumpkin from the background, transfer it to our document. Ctrl + T, reduce the size of the pumpkin, name the layer “pumpkin”.

Step 3. Now change the color. Using the “Lasso (Lasso Tool), select the sprig of pumpkin, invert the selection (Shift +Ctrl +I), (t. to. now we will change the color only pumpkin). Next, change the color to orange (Ctrl + U), settings below, put a tick Toning (Colorize). Invert the selection again (Shift +Ctrl +I) and change the shade of the twigs to green (Ctrl + U), settings below, put a tick Toning (Colorize).

Step 4. Make the colors more saturated (Ctrl + L) settings below.

Step 5. Let’s start creating the face of our pumpkin. Create a new layer, name it “sketch”, draw with the tool “Brush (Brush Tool) eyes, mouth and nose (for the author this process is simple, because he uses the tablet). We will do this: set up the tool “BrushMaking a pumpkin flashlight in Photoshop (Brush Tool): black color, size 3-5 px, select the tool “Pen (Pen Tool) and draw an eye, click RMB and select “contour stroke“, As the stroke, select”Brush“.

Step 6. Create a new layer, name it “fill”, select the layer “sketch” – go to the layer “sketch” using the “Magic wand (Magic Wand Tool) click inside the eyes, nose and mouth (hold down Shift) and on the “fill” layer fill the selection with black color, hide the “sketch” layer.

Step 7. Apply layer styles to “fill” Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay and Overlapping pattern\ Pattern Overlay, settings below.

Step 8. Load the fill layer selection (Ctrl + click on the layer thumbnail), go to the “pumpkin” layer and click Delete, Arrange the layers as shown below.

Step 9. Now add candles. Open the image with the candle, roughly separate it from the background and transfer it to our document, name the layer “candle”, change blending mode (Blending mode) for layer on Lightening (Screen) and on the layers palette, place a “pumpkin” under the layer, duplicate the layer with a candle several times.

Step 10. Make the sketch layer visible, draw new lines to add depth to the holes (steps 5 and 6), name the new layer fill 2, hide the sketch layer.

Step 11. Now apply layer styles to the “fill2” layer. Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay and Overlapping pattern\ Pattern Overlay, settings below.

Step 12. Create a new layer, name “light”, with the “Brush (Brush Tool), settings below, circle the details of the face, then select the tool “Finger (Smudge Tool) and make the lines softer.

Step 13. Add more light lines.

Step 14. Add shadows. Create a new layer, name it “dark”, use a brush with the same settings, only change the color to dark brown using the “Finger (Smudge Tool) make the lines softer.

Step 15. Make the “fill2” layer active, double-click on the effect palette Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay and change the colors to lighter (#741A02 – #AC3304).

Step 16. Again, use the dark tassel on the inside of the holes.

Step 17. Duplicate the “fill” layer and name it “light”, place it on the layer palette below the sketch layer, delete the layer styles, load the layer selection and fill it with orange. Next, follow the menu Filter \ Convert to smart object (Filter \ Smart Object), further Filter \ Blur \ Radial Blur (Filters \ Blur \ Radial Blur), settings below, apply the filter again (Ctrl +F), change blending mode (Blending mode) for layer on Linear clarifier (ext) (Linear Dodge (Add)).

Step 18. Duplicate the “light” layer and remove the filters on the layers palette (you can do this: create a new layer and merge them with a duplicate). Now apply Filter \ Blur \ Bluraccording to Gauss (Gaussian Blur), change blending mode (Blending mode) for the “light copy” layer on Linear clarifier (ext) (Linear Dodge (Add)). Duplicate the “light copy” layer using the tool “Lasso (Lasso Tool) select the rays that emanate from the tooth and remove.

Step 19. Now let’s work on creating the background. Create a new layer above the “background” layer, name it “clouds”. Restore default colors by pressing D, and then Filter \ Rendering \ Clouds (Filter \ Render \ Clouds), apply this filter several times (Ctrl +F) until you are satisfied with the result. Further Filter \ Rendering \ Clouds with overlay (Filter \ Render \ Difference Clouds), also apply this filter several times. Change blending mode (Blending mode) for layer on Lightening basics (Color Dodge), merge the “cloud” and “background” layers (Ctrl + E).

Step 20. Using the “Lasso (Lasso Tool), select a large area of ​​the background layer and copy the selection (Ctrl +J), move the copy a little higher and to the right of the pumpkin, reduce the size (Ctrl + T) and name the layer “background2”. Change the color: Ctrl +U and change the shade to red, change blending mode (Blending Mode) for the layer on Brightening (Screen).

Step 21. Add a few more clouds using the technique described in step 20, just change the color, put all the layers with clouds in the group, name the “backgrounds” and convert the group into a smart object.

Step 22. Next, follow the menu Layer \ Mask Layer \ Show All (Layer \ Layer Mask \ Reveal all). Using the “Oval area (Eliptical Marquee Tool) draw an ellipse as shown below, then hold down SHIFT, draw the second ellipse. Make a selection highlighting in the menu. Selection \ Modification \ Feather (Select \ Modify \ Feather) and fill the selection with black.

Step 23 Add a surface. Draw a rectangle tool “Rectangle” (Rectangle Tool) above the “backgrounds” layer, set opacity (Opacity) for a layer of 75%.

Step 24. Create a shadow in the base of the pumpkin. Create a new layer, name it “shadow”, then use the “Oval area “ (Eliptical Marquee Tool) draw an ellipse, apply a feather Selection \ Modification \ Feather (Select \ Modify \ Feather) 50 px and fill with black color. Using the tool “Lasso” (Lasso Tool), draw a selection of arbitrary shape, apply Feathering 20 px and click Delete, set opacity (Opacity) for a layer of 75%.

Step 25. Create a new layer under the “shadow” layer and name it “inner shadow”. Using a large soft brush, draw shadows around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Load the fill layer selection (Ctrl + click on layer miniature), invert the selection (SHIFT + Ctrl +I), remove unnecessary – click Delete. Load the “fill2” layer selection, apply Feathering 2 px and click Delete

Step 26. Our work is nearing completion, add details. Duplicate the layer with the candle, name “candle1”; as you see at the base of the candle a smooth transition to black color, we need to get rid of it. Select tool “Area (horizontal line) “, Click once, then transform our selection – make active the tool”Move (Move Tool) (in this case, check the box “Show controls ») and pull down the marker, press Enter. Using the “Stamp (Clone Tool), create a smooth transition from light to dark areas, also use the “Eraser” (Erase) to remove the excess.

Step 27. Select tool “Stamp (Clone Tool), clone the source from the candle, set a small brush size and paint the wax streaks. Next, using the “Finger (Smudge Tool), go over the streaks. Use the tool “Stamp (Clone Tool) to add shine and tool “Finger (Smudge Tool) smear.

Step 28. Create a reflection. Duplicate the “candle1” layer, name it “reflection”, then in the menu Editing \ Transforming \ Flip Vertically (Edit \ Transform \ Flip Vertical), move the candle down. Next, add a layer mask and apply Gradient (Gradient) from white to black. Next, create a shadow – draw a small selection on the new layer – “candle shadow”, blend and fill with black. Put three layers: “candle1”, “reflection” and “shadow of a candle” in one group and convert it into a smart object, create a duplicate and place it to the right of the pumpkin, apply Filter \ Blur \ Gauss Blur (Blur filter) with a small radius.

Step 29. It remains to create a reflection for the pumpkin. Place all the pumpkin layers in the group, duplicate and create a reflection like in step 28.
