Making a vintage design in photoshop.

To get started, let’s first look at the end result.

Materials for the lesson:

Step 1. Let’s start with the Background. We need a piece of old dirty paper. You do not need to buy photos on paid portals. One of the advantages of vintage design is the easy way to create it. You can take and scan a sheet of your old notebook. In truth, you can use the tools at hand. Start by using a paper image, create a new document with a size of 768×1024. Move a piece of paper to our new document, remove the white background, below the paper create a layer with black fill.

Step 2. This is one of the tricks of how to easily create the effect of contaminated paper. Create a new layer on top of the paper layer and name it “clouds”. Make the foreground and background colors the default by pressing (D), then apply the filter Filter – Render – Clouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds). Using Eraser Tool (E) (Eraser tool) large size (180 pixels, Hardness 0%) delete some areas. Change the layer’s overlay mode to Color Burn (Dimming basics), Opacity at 75%.

Step 3. Now we will add some design elements. Usually, I add the background image first and then the main thing, but this time I will start with the main image. Insert an image of a man reading into our document. Using Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) (Lasso tool) remove the white background and position the image in the lower right corner.

Step 4. Since Pop Art can sometimes be bizarre, sometimes funny, we will add to our reader the head of a dog instead of the normal one. Add a layer mask Layer Mask – Reveal All (Layers – Layer Mask – Show All) layer with a man. Using a soft black brush, hide the person’s head. Then insert the dog image anywhere. Via Magic Wand Tool (W) (Magic wand tool) remove the back white background. And with the help of a soft Eraser, remove the remaining places around the neck.

Step 5. Position the dog’s head over the man’s neck, temporarily hide the layer with the dog’s head. Choose a tool Lasso Tool (L) (Tool “Lasso”), select and copy parts of the suit and shirt and a little man’s hair, then paste the selection into the dog’s head layer. Use the eraser to edit the dog’s neck so that it blends into the costume. If necessary, using Free transformation move the dog’s head so that it is right on the neck of the person.

Step 6. Edit the dog’s Eraser neck for a soft transition, then click Ctrl +U for correction Hue /Saturation (Hue / Saturation) under the color of human hair.

Step 7. Combine the layers with the head of the dog, the man and the selected parts of the suit in a new folder. Then convert it to Smart Object (Smart Object) and call it “Man-Dog”, or whatever you like.

Step 8. Highlight the smart object “Man-Dog”. Create guides, move the book to the center of the document. Create a duplicate Smart Object. Apply filter Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter – Blur – Blur in motion), angle 0, distance 50 pixels, position the layer below the original layer. Change Blend mode copies on Color Burn (Dimming basis), Opacity 25%. For the original Smart Object, change the blending mode to Hard Light (Hard light). Drag a layer with clouds on top of all layers in the Layers Palette.

Step 9. Now we will create the rays of the sun from the figure. I downloaded the Rays figure. Arrange it so that the area in which the book is located remains clean. Raster figure Layer – Rasterize – Shape (Layers – Shredded – Figure). Change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap), Opacity 75%.

Step 10. Now a very important step. To prevent the rays from remaining on the surface of the person, move the layer below the “Man-Dog” layer (how the layers are arranged can be seen in the pictures above), but the layer with the person still doesn’t have Normal Layer mode and the rays are visible. And so Ctrl + click on the layer thumbnail to make a selection. Select the layer with the rays and click Delete. To make the lines look older, apply Layer mask , then using brushes with splashes (Opacity 80%, Press 80%, color black) paint in different parts of the document splashes on the layer mask.

Step 11. Give the human layer a Shadow, Spread – 0%, Offset – 15 pixels.

Step 12. Add some pattern to our design, I found an image of a floral background, which we will use first. I will explain how to do it quickly. Create a new document size 50×50 pixels, insert the image as shown below. Then Edit – Define Pattern (Edit – Define the pattern) and save under your name. Go back to the main document, drag a rectangle, be it a selection or a shape, on a new layer on top of the cloud layer, rename it to “Texture 1”. Fill it with any color, then using Paint Bucket Tool (G) (Fill tool), Regular function, fill the layer with a new texture. If necessary, rasterize the layer, to do this, create a clean layer on top of the layer with the texture and merge them together. Using Sponge Tool (O) (Sponge tool) “soak” the pattern in some places.

Step 13. Apply a layer mask Layer – Layer Mask – Hide All (Layers – Layer Mask – Hide All) on the “Texture 1” layer. Choose a 50px brush, hardness 100%, color white. Click in some places with the mouse to make the patterns visible. It doesn’t matter if you redraw the layer with a person, we use a mask that you can always edit. This is the easiest way back if we don’t like something. I also put a big red spot over a naked dog on a piece of paper using Clone Stamp Tool (S) (Tool “Stamp”).

Step 14. Ctrl + click on the thumbnail of the human layer to create a selection. Select the thumbnail of the “Texture 1” layer mask. Select Paint Bucket Tool (G) (Fill tool), set the base color to black, fill the selection. Keep in mind that you have filled the layer mask. Change the Blend Mode of “Texture 1” to Multiply (Multiplication).

Step 15. Add another pattern, I found an interesting retro image of abstraction. We transform it into a pattern, I just changed the size of 50×50, made it square. Then I repeated step 12 (filled a new layer with a pattern, rasterized the layer, used Sponge Tool (O) (Tool “Sponge”) for “moistening”).

Step 16. Apply a layer mask Layer – Layer Mask – Hide All (Layers – Layer Mask – Hide All) for a new “Texture 2” layer, using a 50px white brush, swipe in some places on the mask.

Step 17. Ctrl + click on the thumbnail of the human layer to create a selection. Fill this selection in the “Texture 2” layer with the mask, as in step 14.

Step 18. Change the Blend Mode of “Texture 2” to Multiply (Multiplication). In combination with the previous layer “Texture 1” you get a very ugly effect. To fix this, use Ctrl + click with the mouse on the thumbnail of the “Texture 2” layer mask in the layers palette to create a selection. Then select the mask for the “Texture 1” layer and fill the selection with black. To finish this step, apply the following effect to the “Texture 2” layer: Color Overlay (Overlay color) settings see below. If you want, you can add more patterns.

Step 19. Hard work done! Take an image with words, cut and paste some words into our main document. Using Free Transform you can place them in different places as you please. Apply the layer style – Shadow, see the parameters below. Also correct Hue /Saturation (Hue / Saturation) for each word, the parameters below.

Step 20. Let’s add some text blocks, but first we need three pieces of worn paper. I used these: first, second, third, they are in the archive. Using Eraser Tool (E) (Eraser tool) of irregular shape, remove excess parts to give a torn effect. Apply the layer style – Shadow, see the parameters below. Then using Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer tool) darken the paper in some places.

Step 21 Now add different letters over the paper, use different fonts, change for each layer the blending mode to Vivid Light (Bright light).

Step 22 Add more text above the layer with the background (an aged sheet of paper), I used the Antique font Bleeding Cowboys, change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap), duplicate the layer for more effect.

It’s all! Simple, easy and fast, you can make a design in the style of old pop art. This lesson serves as a pointer to this topic. You can create your own image in this style using similar techniques. I hope you have found many useful things for yourself in this lesson.
