Making an advertising flyer in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to create a creative advertising flyer ready for printing.

Materials for the lesson:

Document preparation

Step 1

Create a new document with the size of 216×154 millimeters. This is the size of the A5 format with indents at the edges of 3 mm. Since this work is intended for printing, we set the color mode to CMYK and the resolution to 300 pixels / inch.

Step 2

Add guides to mark indents at the edges. We use the tool Move Tool (V) (Move) and the Shift key to adjust the position of the guides.

Step 3

Add guides on all sides of the document.

Create a background

Step 1

Click Shift + Ctrl + N to create a new layer. Fill it with white (Alt + Backspace). Make sure the panel Color (Color) set the CMYK sliders.

Step 2

Click on the button Add a Layer Style (Add layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Gradient overlay (Gradient overlap). White slider set at 30%. Change the color of the black slider to pale yellow (C = 9 M = 6 Y = 14 K = 0).

Step 3

Via Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle) create a rectangle. Size enter 216 x 56 mm.

Step 4

Bind a rectangle to the upper left corner of the document. Fill it with dark brown (C = 49 M = 74 Y = 80 K = 70).

Step 5

Via Pen tool (P) (Pen) add a nodule to the bottom of the rectangle.

Step 6

Via Direct selection tool (A) (Partial selection) start editing the knot guides to create a Bezier curve.

Step 7

We continue to edit the rectangle, as shown below.

Step 8

Move on File – Place Embedded (File – Place embedded), then select the image people-1.jpg from the set that you had to download at the beginning of the lesson.

Step 9

We use Move Tool (V) (Move) to place the photo in the upper left corner, as shown below.

Step 10

Via Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle) create a rectangle in mode Path (Circuit). Size enter 216 x 100 mm.

Step 11

Via Direct selection tool (A) (Partial selection) move the rectangle right on the photo in the upper left corner.

Step 12

Activate Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle) and on the top toolbar of the tool parameters click on the button Mask (Mask). As a result, a vector mask will appear on the photo layer.

Step 13

Via Pen tool (P) (Pen) add a new nodule on the mask. Then using Direct selection tool (A) (Partial selection), create a Bezier curve.

Step 14

Using the same tools (Pen and Partial Selection), edit the mask as shown below. Pay attention to the position of the nodules and the simplicity of the form. The smaller the nodules, the smoother and more accurate the result.

Step 15

Move on Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur). Set Radius to 6.

Step 16

Click on the mask of the smart filter and fill it with a black and white gradient from left to right.

Step 17

Add a new layer mask to the photo. Soft tassel (B) gently erase the right edge.

Step 18

Create Brightness / Contrast adjustment layer (Brightness / Contrast). To do this, click on the icon Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer). Set the Brightness to 40 and Contrast to 10.

Step 19

Right click on the adjustment layer and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask). Due to this, the correction will be valid only in the photo below.

Step 20

Click on the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Solid color (Colour). The fill color is set to brown (C = 30 M = 80 Y = 100 K = 30).

Step 21

Click on the vector mask photos. Hold down the Alt key and drag the mask onto the layer with the color fill. As a result, the mask will be copied.

Step 22

Via Direct selection tool (A) (Partial selection) drag the top right knot into the corner.

Step 23

Take brush (B) and edit the mask to remove part of the fill. Set the opacity of the brown layer to 75%.

Step 24

Take Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle) and draw a new rectangle.

Step 25

Fill the rectangle with a light brown color (C = 10 M = 65 Y = 100 K = 0).

Step 26

Place the layer with the light rectangle under the dark.

Step 27

Via Pen tool (P) (pen) and Direct selection tool (A) (Partial selection) edit the rectangle as shown below.

Add text and logo

Step 1

Create a circle using Ellipse tool (U) (Ellipse). The size of the figure is 248 x 248 px. Fill it with brown color (C = 30 M = 80 Y = 100 K = 30).

Step 2

Add a layer style Drop shadow (Shadow). Install Opacity (Opacity) at 14%, Distance (Distance) by 5 px and Size (Size) by 15 px.

Step 3

Create another 400 x 400 px circle. Fill it with dark blue (C = 100 M = 80 Y = 45 K = 50).

Step 4

We also apply the layer style to the second circle. Drop shadow (Shadow). To do this, right-click on the layer with the first circle and select Copy Layer Style (Copy layer style), then right-click on the second and select Paste Layer Style (Paste layer style). Place the blue circle under the brown one.

Step 5

Via Type tool (T) (Text) write the text. This lesson uses the font. Proxima nova. Text size with a price of 17 pt. All lines are created as separate layers. Via Move Tool (V) (Move) place the text in a circle, as shown below.

Step 6

Add text on the blue circle. The size of the largest text is 31 pt.

Step 7

We continue to add text. Font – Proxima Nova Light, size – 18 pt.

Step 8

We write another text. Size – 36 pt. Set Tracking (Tracking) to -10.

Step 9

Select both text layers. Hold the Alt key and drag them down to duplicate.

Step 10

Via Type tool (T) (Text) edit duplicate text as shown below.

Step 11

Move on File – Place Embedded (File – Place embedded) and in the opened window select the file acme-travel-logo.ai.

Step 12

Reduce the size of the logo and place it in the upper right corner.

Step 13

Add a layer style Drop shadow (Shadow). Install Opacity (Opacity) by 11%, Distance (Distance) by 3 px and Size (Size) by 16 px.

Add photos

Step 1

Create a rectangle with Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle) size 60 x 28 px.

Step 2

Via Direct selection tool (A) (Partial selection) select the rectangle and in the top panel in the alignment menu select Horizontal Centers.

Step 3

Move on File – Place Embedded (File – Place embedded) and add the file people-11.jpg to the document.

Step 4

Reduce the size of the image and place it on a rectangle.

Step 5

Activate Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle) and on the tool parameter panel click on the button Mask (Mask). This function will make a vector mask from a rectangle and apply it to the photo.

Step 6

We clamp Alt + Shift and drag the photo to duplicate it.

Step 7

Move on File – Place Embedded (File – Place embedded) and select the image city-5.jpg.

Step 8

Reduce the photo and place it above the layer with a copy of the previous photo with the girl.

Step 9

Grab the copy mask of the photo with the girl and drag it to the new photo, then delete the people-11-copy layer.

Step 10

Repeat steps 7-9 and add a map.

Step 11

Select the layer with the map and add a layer style Stroke (Stroke).

Step 12

Set the stroke size to 2 px. Change Position (Position) on Inside (Inside) and select the brown color (C = 30 M = 80 Y = 100 K = 30).

Add text below

Step 1

Using Type tool (T) (Text) again write the text. Size – 11 pt, color – light brown (C = 10 M = 65 Y = 100 K = 0).

Step 2

Add more text. Size – 9 pt, Leading (Interlaying) – 13 pt, color – gray (K = 90).
