Making wallpapers with clouds in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to create wallpapers with very stylish and fluffy clouds in the program Photoshop. The author came up with an idea after a friend asked if it was possible to create a style for the clouds.

We will use the main program tools and layer styles to create an effect. The whole process will take from 30 to 45 minutes, and the lesson will be useful for those who start in Photoshop. Some good tips and methods will be useful to everyone.

Step 1. Open Photoshop and create a new document with dimensions of 2560×1440 pixels. After that, unlock the background layer by double clicking on it and clicking OK. Now go to the menu Layer – Layer Styles – Gradient Overlay (Layer-Layer Styles- Gradient Overlay). Use radial gradient style and colors from ddeffa before 96ccee.

Step 2. Using tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool U) create a circle. The color of the circle at this stage does not matter.

Step 3. Draw a circle again and place it to the right of the previous one. Make the second circle a little smaller.

Step 4. Add another circle next to the previous one. Use the screenshot below to see how to do this. Notice that the circles overlap.

Step 5. Let’s add another circle, this time a lot smaller, and place it at the top of the previous circle.

Step 6. To complete the cloud shape, add the last lap, this time larger than the previous one. Group the layers with circles and duplicate the group. Then go to the menu Layers – Merge Layers (Layer-Merge Layers) to merge layers in a duplicate group, and get one merged layer. Now we have one cloud layer, but we still need a group with circles a little later.

Step 7. Select the cloud layer we merged in the previous step and go to the menu Layers – Layer Style – Color Overlay (Layer-Layer Styles-Color Overlay). In the settings, use white color.

Step 8. Now add a layer style. Stamping (Bevel and Emboss). In the settings, put the type of embossing Inner bevel (Inner Bevel), Glubin (Depth) – 100%, size 8 pixels., Softening (Soften) -16px. And also customize Angle (Angle) 90º and Height (Altitude) – 37º. Change Gloss contour (Gloss Countou) as in the screenshot and change the blending modes for Backlight mode (Highlight Mode) and shadow mode (Shadow Mode) on Darkening basics (Color Burn). Put on them black, and also change Opacity (Opacity).

Step 9. In this step we will configure Internal glow (Inner Glow). Put the Opacity (Opacity) 100%, white color. Then select A source (Source) – On the edges (Edge). Customize Tightening (Choke) 0% and The size (Size) 100 pixels.
Use the image below for more information.

Step 10. Now select the option. Inner shadow (Inner Shadow). To adjust the values, use the following screenshot.

Step 11. The last layer style will be Shadow (Drop Shadow). From the point of view of realism, the shadow here will be superfluous, but the shadow should give some contrast between the cloud and the background, since they use the same colors.

Step 12. Here is the end result of the cloud that we created using layer styles. This is already a very good result, however, it still needs some work.

Step 13. Now we need to add a cloud depth. We will use the circles that remained in the original group. Create new layers with the same layer styles as the cloud, so we will add some volume. To start, reduce Opacity (Opacity) layer with a cloud up to 30%.

Now create a selection of one of the circles, then select the layer with the cloud and duplicate it. Go to menu Layers – Layer Mask – Show Selected Area (Layer-Layer Mask Reveal Selection). Move this new layer under the cloud layer.

Step 14. Activate the layer mask with the circle we created in the previous step. Go to menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter- Blur- Gaussian Blur). In the settings, use the value Radius (Radius) 20 pixels.

Step 15. With such a blur, our circle becomes very airy, and if you want to see a circle with a greater emphasis, use a lower blur value.

Repeat the same steps with the remaining circles. Note that if you unlock the layer mask and move the layer, you can add a few more random effects. The author made this effect on the left side of the cloud.

Step 17. Here is the result after adding the volume. The cloud now looks super fluffy. But we have not finished yet.

Step 18. It’s time to add a rainbow. The author created it using the tool. Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) using rainbow colors. After that, merge the rectangles in one layer and apply Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) for that part of the rainbow that is under the cloud to create a beautiful transparency effect.

Step 19. Download the selection layer with the cloud and create a new layer. Fill it with rainbow colors and apply Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) with a radius of about 100 pixels. After that, move this layer under the other layers that were created for the cloud.

Step 20. Duplicate the cloud twice. Change the copy size and Flip them horizontally (Flipp Horizontall) using the key combination Ctrl +T. Please note that the author did not duplicate the layer with the colors of the rainbow.

Step 21 Now let’s add some text. The author used for the text font Val and just wrote the word Abduzeedo white color. Apply some layer styles to create the same fluffy effect.

Step 22 For the text layer, apply the following styles. The values in the screenshots below.

Step 23 Create a merged layer by standing on the topmost layer in the layers palette and pressing the key combination Alt +Shift +Ctrl +E. Then go to menu Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter-Noise-Add Noise). In the settings, set the value Effect (Amount) 1.5% and distribution select according to Gauss (Gaussian).

Conclusion
From the author: After taking a few steps and spending 45 minutes of time, we created the design of stylish fluffy clouds. I always try to learn new ways to use layer styles, and I think this is one of the most powerful tools in Photoshop. With this lesson I answered the question of my friend, who wanted to learn how to create a beautiful icon with a cloud, and maybe the next time someone would contact you with the same question.
