In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a colorful rock star poster in Photoshop.
For this we will use many different techniques. The lesson is quite difficult, so you need to carefully follow each step. As you can see from the final result, we will create an impressive effect using a regular photo and your knowledge of Photoshop.
Well, let’s get started!
Materials for the lesson:
Step 1. Create a new document sized 620 × 860 pixels, resolution 300, 8-bit RGB mode.
Step 2. Create a new layer, fill it with black, add a layer style – Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay), colors #afafaf and #ffffff, type of gradient – radial.
Step 3. Now add our main image. We will use the photo of the girl. Cut it out and put it to work.
Step 4. Duplicate the original layer with the girl and discolor it. (Image> Adjustments> Desaturate – Image-Correction-Discolor). Change the layer’s overlay mode to Soft light (Soft light).
Step 5. Go to the menu and apply the command Image> Apply image (Image-External Channel).
Translator’s Note. On the External Channel tab, select the settings that best suit your image.
Step 6. Pay particular attention to the following steps – this is a technique for creating a robot effect. We will use a brush of 2 pixels and 100% hardness, the color is black. Make the following settings brush – tab Other Dynamics / Transfer (Other dynamics / Transmission) set the Fluctuation amount of paint 2% and Control – Pen pressure.
Step 7. We will use this customized brush when tracing lines created with a pen. Take the tool Pen tool (Pen) and draw a few lines on the girl’s leg (outline mode). Then right-click on the contour line created, select Stoke path (Outline the contour) and select the tool in the list. Brush (Brush). Tick the box Simulate pressure (Simulate pressure). Thus, our contour will be circled with a brush with preset settings.
Step 8. Make a Ctrl + click left mouse button on the layer with the girl. This will load its selection. Create layer mask – click on the layer mask icon in the lower right corner.
Translator’s note. You must be on a layer with drawn contour lines. Creating a mask, you will hide some of the lines protruding beyond the legs of the girl.
Step 9. Apply the same technique to the rest of the girl’s leg. The result should be wonderful!
Step 10 – 11.
Now give the lines the effect of depth. To do this, being on a layer with a girl, use the tool Dodge tool. Use a soft brush with a diameter of 4 pixels.
For the same purpose, use the tool Burn tool (Dimmer). Take a soft brush with a diameter of 7 pixels.
Notetranslator. With these tools you need to lighten and darken the edges from different sides along the black lines with a stroke. Being on a layer with a girl and taking into account the direction of the light, lighten the skin of the leg on one side along the edge and darken on the other.
Step 12. Also, to enhance the volume, create bright highlights on the leg. To do this, draw white lines on the new layer, set the blending mode Soft light (Soft light).
Step 13. So we ended up with a girl’s foot. Now apply a similar technique to her arm. Here is the result that you should get.
Step 14. We created a robot effect for the girl, now hide all the layers associated with the girl. Now we will start creating a colorful background. Using the selection tool Elliptical Marquee tool (Oval area), draw 3 circles and fill them with color, no matter what colors you will use.
Translator’s Note. Draw each circle on a new layer.
Step 15. For each layer with circles, add layer mask, and being in mask mode and using a soft brush, erase some edges of the circles.
Step 16. Create a new layer and select it (Ctrl + A). Click on the image with the right mouse button and select the command Fill – Fill (or select in the menu Edit> Fill – Editing-Execute the fill), use this texture for the fill (pattern in the archive).
Translator’s note. You saved a file with a .pat extension. You need to install this new texture in Photoshop.
How to install a new texture in Photoshop
Step 17. Load a selection of a medium sized circle (blue). To do this, Ctrl + click on the layer with this circle. On the created layer with the texture, press Ctrl + J.
Translator’s note. This will copy a circle filled with a pattern onto a new layer. You can pre-change the size of the texture layer using transformation (to get the size that best fits your image resolution). After that, hide the visibility of the rectangular patterned layer, it will no longer be needed.
Step 18. Choose a tool Wand tool (Magic Wand). While on a layer with a circle filled with a pattern, select and delete the white background (only the dotted pattern will remain). Change the blending mode of this layer to Multiply (Multiplication). Apply a layer style to the resulting image. Color overlay (Overlay color), select color # 78703a.
Step 19. Also apply a layer style. Color overlay (Overlay color) to a layer with a red circle (the color is the same # 78703a) and a layer with a blue circle (color black).
Step 20. Create a new layer under the patterned layer. Using a soft brush, make one print on it (the color is the same # 78703a, select the appropriate brush size). At this point we finished the creation of circles.
Translator’s note. The smallest circle should also be black. Thus, you have 5 layers with circles – three with a fill color, one – a pattern and one with a print with a soft brush.
Step 21 Create a group of layers in which you place the resulting layers with circles. Duplicate this group (hide the visibility of the bottom group for now). Create a new layer on top, select this layer and a group of layers on the layers panel, right-click and select Merge layers (Merge layers).
Translator’s note. Thus, you get a new layer, on which there will be a figure containing all the circles created earlier with the layer styles applied to them.
Step 22 Duplicate the layer with the resulting shape 5 times (Ctrl + J).
Translator’s Note. Each copy slide and rotate to get the result as in the screenshot.
Step 23 Repeat step 21, i.e. create and duplicate a group of layers with five shapes, create a new layer, merge it with a group of layers. The result is a layer containing a complex shape, duplicate it. Apply a transform to one copy. Transform> Perspective (Transformation – Perspective).
Step 24 Now we color our circles. Use for this Hue and saturation (Ctrl + U) (Hue / Saturation), set the desired color. Check the Toning box. Duplicate this layer and place it on the other side, change the color again using Hue and saturation (Hue / Saturation). Make visible the layers with the girl.
Step 25. Take the original untransformed shape with a circle (for this, we created earlier copies), apply similar parameters to it in Hue and saturation (Hue / Saturation). Place a few circles behind the girl as shown below.
Step 26. Create a new layer and use the tool. Gradient (Gradient), to darken the bottom of the image, as shown in the screenshot. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft light), opacity 74%.
Step 27. Now download this texture with stars. Put it into work and change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light).
Step 28. Again, use the original shape with a circle. Change the color using Hue and saturation (Hue / Saturation) and change the perspective. Make several copies and arrange them as shown below.
Step 29. Create shadows and reflections for girls and circles.
Step 30. Again create a circle filled with the texture we used earlier. Make a print on the top with a brush with a light effect. Choose a tool Smudge Tool (Finger) with a soft brush of 72 pixels and an intensity of 32% and make a distortion, as shown in the screenshot.
Translator’s note. The author does not give a link to the light brush he uses, you can find a similar one or create your own.
Step 31 Place the resulting layer behind the girl. Duplicate the layer, apply perspective, and place the girl under your legs.
Step 32 Again use the same light brush, make several prints by selecting the appropriate color. Change the blending mode to Color dodge (Lightening the basics).
Step 33 In the next step we will create colored lines. This is a rather complicated technique, so be careful.
Step 33.1. Take the tool Pen tool (Pen) and draw an abstract curved line. Choose a black hard brush with a diameter of 6 pixels and adjust the parameters of the brush – Other dynamics / Transfer (Other Dynamics / Transmission). Set the Fluctuation amount of paint 2% and Control – Pen pressure. Right-click on the contour drawn by the pen, select Stroke path (Outline the contour), specify the tool Brush (Brush), tick the options Simulate pressure.
In the same way, draw a second line.
Step 33.2. Draw a white line between the two lines.
Translator’s note. Use the tool Pen Tool (Pen) in layer-shape mode.
Step 33.3. Use the previously created figures with circles, place them on top of the white stripe as shown below, erase extra circles.
Step 33.4. Create for layers with circles clipping masks to the white stripe layer (Ctrl + alt + g).
Step 33.5. Paint on a new layer of stains with a pink brush, also create clipping mask.
Translator’s Note. Place this layer above the white stripe layer, but below the circle layers.
Step 33.6. On top draw another black line using the tool Pen Tool (Pen).
Step 34 By the same principle, create a few more colored lines, place them in different places, as shown below.
Step 35 Create a new layer using the tool Сustom shape tool (Freeform) draw a star. Apply layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay), select a radial gradient type. Use the colors # f217ef and # 73f00e.
Step 36 Apply the perspective and also add a little white glow on top.
Arrange the layer as shown below.
Step 37. Finally, create some more effects. Add smoke over the girl’s head and write “Are You a Rockstar?” Below.
Translator’s Note. The author added 2 more circles (above the girl’s head and below) and a little glow on the line and circles.
Step 38 In this final step of the lesson, create a background of ellipses.
Translator’s note. The author used the Adobe Illustrator program to create such a figure, and transferred it to Photoshop.
You can create a similar effect immediately in Photoshop, see the Tape Effect lesson.
You can also find a similar brush or shape.
Place a layer with ellipses above the background layer, duplicate, select the appropriate blend mode and layer opacity.
In this lesson is over. As you have noticed, this is a rather complicated lesson, in which many different techniques and effects are used, but the result is worth it – we created a stunning rock star poster!
