In this lesson you will learn how to create a wallpaper for Valentine’s Day in Photoshop.
We will make a beautiful heart of denim with an insert of leather and add the effect of embroidery.
I hope you learn something new from this tutorial! And I also think that you will please yourself and friends with the beautiful result!
Here is what we are going to do today:
Step 1 – Determine the size of the image
Today we will create a wallpaper on the desktop with the theme of “Valentine’s Day.” First of all, you need to determine the size of the document with which you want to work. As you know, there are many different sizes based on the screen resolution, for example, 1600×1200, 1920×1080, and so on. Usually, when I make a wallpaper, I choose the size of 1920×1200 pixels. Thus, even if you reduce the final image, it will look good.
Another trick is to use seamless textures for the background, so if you need a larger image you can easily add extra pixels.
Step 2 – Create a jeans background
I know that there are many different lessons about how to create a denim texture in Photoshop, so this step will not be my main focus.
I will use a seamless denim pattern. If you do not like this image, you can take one of the many denim textures that are available in the source materials for the lesson (or your own). To make the final result look good, use a higher resolution texture.
Create the first layer and fill it with any color. Name your new layer “denim background”.
I will make a denim background, using the source “denim pattern”. Load this set of patterns into your photoshop. Open the window “Layer style“(Layer Style) and add”Pattern overlay“(Pattern Overlay), I will use a dark dense texture.
Step 3 – Add Rays to the Background
Download the Vector Rays brushes and install them. Create a new layer on top of the denim background. Set the color for the brush – white. Choose from the set the favorite rays and add them in the center of the image.
Change the size of the brush to cover the entire canvas. Now set the blending mode (blending mode) of this layer to “Overlap“(Overlay), opacity – 100% ~ 10% to get a softer look.
Step 4 – Create a Denim Heart
Download “Vector Heart” shapes. Install them. Create a new layer on top of the rest. Draw a heart on the center of the canvas. Make sure the panel is set to “Contours“(Paths).
Activate the tool “Angle” (Convert Point Tool) and click on the anchor point. The line you see is called the Tangent Line. Without releasing the mouse, rotate and drag the line to get a curve.
Translator’s Note: you can also use the tool “Arrow“it will help you change the shape of the contour.
Activate the tool “Outline selection“(Path Selection Tool), right-click on the contour and select from the submenu”To form a selected area“(Make Selection).
Stand on the layer “Denim background” and press the key combination CTRL + J, this will copy a part of the denim texture to the new layer.
Translator’s Note: if you want to copy a certain part of the texture, but you did not manage to draw the outline in the right place, I recommend creating a new layer (before copying) and fill the selection with any color on this layer. Next you can edit the size and position of the future copy using this auxiliary heart. When the plot is determined, press the combination “ CTRL + click on the form with the heart “ go to the “Jeans background” layer and copy the selected shape. Further, the visibility of the layer with an auxiliary heart can be turned off (or delete this layer).
Name this layer “Denim Heart” and place it on top of all the others. Next we add some layer styles to the denim heart:
– inner shadow (Inner Shadow):
– external glow (Outer Glow):
-internal glow (Inner Glow):
Create a new layer. Set color Foreground (Foreground) at # 84898d, and Background plan (Background) at # 373a3e. Next, go to “Filter – Rendering – Clouds“(Filter – Render – Clouds). Set the blending mode of this layer to”Lightening basics“(Color Dodge), opacity – 17%. You can adjust the opacity of this layer at your discretion.
Step 5 – Draw the Folds
In this step, we will create a wrinkle effect on the fabric at the edges of the denim heart.
Brushes from the source materials “Brushes2” will help us to draw the folds.
Go to the “Denim Heart” layer. Create a selection of this layer. Next, go to the menu “Selection – Modification – Compress“(Select Menu – Modify – Contract). Set the value –12 px.
From the resulting selection, form Work path (Work Path). To do this, right-click on the selection and select the corresponding item in the submenu.
Create a new layer and name it “Folds”. Set foreground color to white. From the Brushes 2 set, select brush number 44.
Translator’s Note: brush size also depends on image size (20 – 100 pix.)
Click on the “tab”Contours“(Paths Tab) and right-click on the Work path, from the submenu select”Perform a stroke“(Stroke Path):
Set the blending mode of the layer to “Overlap“(Overlay) (opacity – 60%) and add some layer styles as shown in the image below.
Step 6 – Create a line of thread
In the archive “Brushes 2”, which we downloaded earlier, select the oblong brush. Create a new layer on top of all the others and name it “Stitches”. Make a selection with a heart. Next, compress the selection to 22 pixels. From the selection, create a work path (see step number 5).
Set foreground color to # c8932e. Make sure the oblong brush is selected from the set and go to the “Contours“(Paths). Right-click on the Work Path and select”Outline the contour“Stroke Path.
To make the line look more realistic, add some styles to the “Stitches” layer: Shadow (Drop Shadow) and External glow (Outer Glow).
This is what our denim heart looks like now.
Step 7 – Add a Label
Create a new layer above the ray layer and name it “Tag”. Activate the tool “Rounded Rectangle” (Rounded Rectangle Tool) and draw a tag (choose the color to your liking, for example, I will use this9b3232).
Open the Layer Style window for the tag layer and add such ones as Shadow (Drop Shadow), Inner shadow (Inner Shadow) and Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay) (settings are shown in the pictures below). When overlaying patterns on label, use a denim texture that is added to the background at the beginning of the lesson.
Write the text on the tag (on the new layer). I’ll add my site name “psd-dude.com” to it. When the caption is ready, change the blending mode of the text layer to “Lightening basics“(Color Dodge).
Step 8 – Add a leather label
To make a label in the shape of a heart, I will use the skin texture. You can use the textures that are offered in the source code, or choose any other.
To change the color of the leather shred, use the adjustment layer. “Color tone \ Saturation” (Hue / Saturation). Make sure you check the “Toning“(Colorize).
Activate the tool “Arbitrary shape” (Custom Shape Tool) and in the list of shapes, select the shape of a broken heart. Draw on the skin texture appropriate shape. Create a selection around the contour and copy the resulting area to a new layer (CTRL + J). Name the resulting layer Label.
Now add these layer styles to this heart: Shadow (Drop Shadow) and External glow (Outer Glow).
Step 9 – Decorate the leather insert
Now we need to add holes for the rivets to the label. Activate the tool “Eraser” (Eraser Tool). From the set “Brushes 2” choose a round brush.
Depending on the size and shape of the heart, you will have to adjust the size of the round brush and the distance between the points, otherwise you will not get the desired result!
Create a selection layer “Label” and compress the selection by 17 pixels. Transform the selection into the work path (see step # 5).
Click on the “tab”Contours“(Paths Tab) and right-click on the outline of a broken heart, from the submenu, select”Perform a stroke“(Stroke Path). Set the stroke tool”Eraser” (Eraser Tool).
Step 10 – Add a Vintage Effect Leather Label
I want to make skin texture more realistic and attractive. To do this, add a new paper texture to the new layer. Place the paper image over the label layer. Create a selection label layer and apply to the paper layer Layer mask (Layer Mask). Set the blending mode (in the closing mode) of the paper layer to “Multiplication“(Multiply).
You can also add an adjustment layer. “Brightness \ Contrast“(Brightness and Contrast) to get the desired result.
To get extra volume, duplicate the old paper texture layer, reduce the fill of the copy layer to 0% and add a layer style “Stamping“(Bevel and Emboss), as shown:
We have already done most of the work: we added a denim texture, a heart, a label and a tag. Here is what we have at this stage:
Step 11 – Add Text Embroidery
Create a new layer called “Text-embroidery”. Activate the tool “Brush” (Brush Tool), choose an oblong brush, which we have already used to create stitches in step number 6, set the color for the brush – #ffeace. And we write any text “by hand”. When done with the label add a layer style to it Shadow (Drop Shadow), in the parameters, set the values for “Bias“(distance) and”The size“(size) by 1 pix.
Step 12 – Add Details
We come to the final step of the lesson. Create a new layer and name it “Details.” Using the previous brush, draw stars, hearts or other elements. You can draw on different layers like me. This allows you to experiment with tinctures and styles. For example, you can draw curls with a white brush, and set the blending mode (in the model mode) to “Overlap“(Overlay)
Now our holiday wallpapers are ready! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
