We draw a medallion in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to create interesting wallpapers for the Disney cartoon “Volt”. in Photoshop.

The final result:

Step 1

First, create a new document. File – New (File> New), set the following dimensions to 1280 x 1024 px, and also set the resolution to 72 pixels / inch (dpi). Using tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool (G)), fill the background with black. Next, with the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool (U)), draw a circle. Circle color # 4B3214.

Step 2

Double click on the circle layer to apply the following layer styles:

Shadow (Drop Shadow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Linear dimmer (Linear Burn)

Internal glow (Inner Glow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Lightening (Screen)
  • Method (Technique): Accurate (Precise)

The result should be as in the screenshot below.

Step 3

Next, create a new layer. Choose a tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool (M)) to draw a circle on top of the previous circle. The color of the circle is # D39C3F.

Step 4

Double-click on the created circle layer to apply the following layer styles:

Shadow (Drop Shadow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Overlap (Overlay)

Inner Shadow (Inner Shadow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Linear dimmer (Linear Burn)

Internal glow (Inner Glow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Lightening basics (Color dodge)
  • Method (Technique): Soft (Soft)

Stamping (Bevel and Emboss)

  • Mode backlight (Highlight Mode): Linear clarifier (Add) (Linear Dodge (Add)
  • Mode the shadows (Shadow Mode) Multiplication (Multiply)

Stamping – Contour (Bevel and Emboss> Contour)

Overlapping pattern (Pattern Overlay)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Soft light (Soft Light)

The result should be as in the screenshot below.

Step 5

Next, add text to the medal image.

Step 6

In the screenshot below, you can see all the settings for each line of text.

Step 7

Next, select all the text by pressing the keys (Ctrl + Shift) + click on the thumbnail of the text layer. Once you have loaded the active selection, go to the layer with the medal. Next, you need to press the (Delete) key to cut the text inside the coin. Next, temporarily turn off the visibility of layers with text.

Step 8

Next, with the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool (E)), remove the inside of the letter ‘O’. Now, we need to draw an element inside this letter. Using tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool (L)), create a shape inside the letter ‘O’, resembling a lightning. Paint over the painted zipper with a brush, the color of the brush is the same as the color of the medal.

Step 9

Create a new layer below the medal layer (translator’s note: the layer you created in Step 3). Next, we need to add texture inside large letters using the brush color # 4B331B. The brush that we need is shown in the screenshot below. Hold the (Alt) key + click between the layer with the medal and the new layer to convert the top layer into a clipping mask:

Step 10

The brush that we need to create the texture.

The result should be as in the screenshot below.

Step 11

Create a new layer, fill this layer with white color, to create the effect of noise we go on Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter> Noise> Add Noise). Set the settings that are shown in the screenshot below:

Step 12

Next, go Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur). Set the following settings: Angle (Angle): 90, Bias (Distance): 90:

Change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (Multiply).

We get the texture with scratches.

Step 13

Next, we add an eyelet to the medal using the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool (U)). Hold the (Alt) key while creating the inner circle.

Step 14

Double-click on the created layer with an eye to apply the following layer styles:

Stamping (Bevel and Emboss)

  • Backlight mode (Highlight Mode) Normal (Normal)
  • Shadow mode (Shadow Mode) Multiplication (Multiply)

Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay)

  • Style (Style): Angular (Angle)

Gradient editor (Gradient Editor)

Stroke (Stroke)

The final result:
