  • Color checkpoint (position 100%): # ffec6c

You should get the following result:

Step 5

Group into a group all the layers of which the Christmas tree consists Create a new group (Create a New Group) at the bottom of the layers panel)

Now we have the first version of the Christmas ball. Duplicate the group and create a new layer in the duplicated group on top of all layers. Then select a soft white brush (translator’s note:The size (Size): 100 px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%).

Using the tool Brush (Brush Tool), draw on the layer that we created in the duplicated group, a few small dots (snow).

Change blending mode (Blend Mode) for this layer on Soft light (Soft Light).

You should get the following result:

Step 6

Duplicate the group in which we have a Christmas ball. In the duplicated group above all layers create a texture using the tool Line (Line Tool) (U) (Thickness (Weight) 8px), draw twenty vertical lines.

Merge all layers with lines into one layer (hold down the Ctrl key, select all layers with lines, then press the Ctrl + E key combination to merge the selected layers into one).

Step 7

Go to the layer with vertical lines and press the key combination Ctrl + T, then click on the icon at the top of the options bar Switching between free transform and warp modes (Switch Between Free Transform And Warp Modes). Warp the vertical lines as shown in the image below. Install fill (Fill) of this layer by 40%.

Thus, we received three versions of the Christmas ball in three separate groups.

Step 8

Duplicate groups with Christmas balls several times and with the help of the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T), create a pyramid of balls, as shown in the image below.

Step 9

Draw a shadow under the pyramid of balls. To do this, create a new layer and select a soft brush. Set such settings as shown in the image below.

Change the foreground color to # 790B0E and draw a spot. Layer on which we painted the spot (future shadow), place under the layers with Christmas balls.

Apply the Free Transform command (Ctrl + T), then drag the spot horizontally and squeeze vertically, as shown in the image below.

Choose a tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) and, while on a layer with a shadow, select a part of the shadow, as shown in the image below.

Click Delete.

Step 10

Now we draw a little star, select the tool Polygon (Polygon Tool) (U), and go to the tool options panel (above), click on the gear icon (Set advanced shape and outline parameters). Install radius (Radius): 110 px, depth of the rays (Indent Sides by): 42% and check the box Smooth exterior corners (Smooth Corners), Star (Star) Smooth inside corners (Smooth Indents). Also set in the options bar Parties (Sides): 5.

Place the cursor on the canvas, then hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse out a little to draw the star shape.

Step 11

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) and select from the list Internal glow (Inner Glow).

Internal glow (Inner Glow):

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Normal (Normal)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 100%
  • Noise (Noise): 0%
  • Light color: # 8d0000
  • Method (Technique): Soft (Sofler)
  • A source (Source): On the edges (Edge)
  • Tightening (Choke): 0%
  • The size (Size): 13 px
  • Circuit (Contour): Linear (Linear)
  • Smoothing (Anti-aliased): uncheck
  • Range (Range): 50%
  • Swing (Jitter): 0%

Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Normal (Normal)
  • Dithering (Dither): Uncheck
  • Opacity (Opacity): 100%
  • Gradient (Gradient): # ff5825, # 840000
  • Align to layer (Align with Layer): Put a check mark
  • Style (Style): Radial (Radial)
  • Angle (Angle): 90 °
  • Scale (Scale): 150%

Left-click on the color bar (gradient) to open the gradient editor, then set the color control points as shown in the image below. Click OK to apply the settings and close the dialog box.

Gradient editor (Gradient Editor):

  • Color checkpoint (position 0%): #ff5825
  • Color checkpoint (position 100%): # 840000

You should get the following result.

Step 12

Place a mounting layer and a ring layer on top of the star. You can take these layers from any group in which we drew balls.

Merge layers (mount, ring, star) into one (Ctrl + E), then apply to the star Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T), reduce the size and place the star on the top of the pyramid of balls.

Click on the icon Create a new correction layer “Juiciness” (New Adjustment Layer “Vibrance”) or go to Layers – New Adjustment Layer – Juiciness (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Vibrance). Set the value to: Juiciness (Vibrance): +21 and Saturation (Saturation) +10.

We should have the following result.

Go to Layers – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves) and adjust the shape of the curve, as shown in the image below, in order to slightly adjust the colors.

We should have the following result.

Step 13

Now let’s create a glow on the ball. Using the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U), draw a circle.

Add a layer mask to the circle layer (at the bottom of the layers panel, click the icon Add layer mask (Add Layer Mask). Choose a soft round brush (set black and opacity (Opacity) by 30%).

Pass on the mask layer with a brush, use the image below as an example.

Make fourteen copies of this layer, then go to free transformation (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T) and arrange copies of the layers in the same way as shown in the image below.

Step 14

Now we will add an ornament to the background. Create a new layer and select the tool. Pen (Pen Tool) (P), set the selection tool mode to Circuit (Path), and draw a shape as shown in the image below.

Choose a tool Outline selection (Path Selection Tool) (A) and go to the options bar. With this panel you can change the color of the contour and the thickness of the contour.

This way we get an abstract line in the background.

Using this method, we can create many different lines of different thickness.

Add a layer mask to some layers with lines and select a soft round brush (set opacity (Opacity) by 30%).

Walk over the mask, brushing to hide the edges of the lines.

Step 15

Group all the layers that contain lines (hold down the CTRL key and left-click on the layers you want to group, then release the CTRL key, move the mouse over the selected layers and hold down the left mouse button and drag the selected layers onto the icon Create a new group (Create a New Group)). Install blending mode (Blend Mode) for the group line on Soft light (Soft Light).

Step 16

Add greeting text to our holiday card. Choose a tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type tool) (T). In the panel Symbol (Character panel) select the font, size and color. I used a font called Sansita.

Click on the canvas and in the text box enter “Merry Christmas!”.

Click on the canvas and in the text box enter “Happy New Year”.

Our Christmas and New Year card with shiny red balls is finished!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
