We draw a New Year’s card in Photoshop

In this small tutorial, you will learn how using the drawing tools, such as the Ellipse Tool, and the Gradients in Photoshop CS5, you can create a Christmas greeting card with red glowing balls. You can use these methods and elements to create your own postcard!

The final result.

Materials for the lesson:

Let’s start by creating a new document (Ctrl + N) in Adobe Photoshop, 1000px in size by 1000px (RGB color mode) with a resolution of 72 ppi. Select a background layer (unlock it) in the layers palette and click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette to add Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

Click on Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor) in the settings panel to open the gradient editor and adjust the colors as in the image below. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

Here is a background to our postcard.

Next we draw the Christmas ball, take the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U) and draw a circle (blank for the ball).

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Inner shadow (Inner Shadow):

Add Internal glow (Inner Glow):

Apply Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Click on Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor) in the settings panel to open the gradient editor and set the colors as in the image below. Click OK to close the dialog box. Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor).

We get the following result:

Next, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the layer with the ellipse in the layers palette to create a selection.

Create a new layer and fill the selection with color # 150100, using the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) (G).

Add a mask to the layer by selecting the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers palette and select soft round Brush (Brush) in black (set the Opacity to 15% in the options bar).

Use this brush to draw on a mask to hide unwanted areas, as shown below.

Use the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U) to draw another circle the same size as the previous one, but in white.

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Internal glow (Inner Glow):

We get the following result:

Add a mask to the layer by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers palette and select soft round Brush (Brush) in black (set the Opacity to 30% in the options bar). Delete unwanted areas as shown below.

Create a new layer and select a soft round. Brush (Brush) white (Brush opacity (up to 15%)) to paint highlights.

Here’s what we got:

Install Fill (Fill) up to 65% for this layer.

Create a new layer and select a soft round. Brush (Brush) white color (Opacity of the brush up to 20%).

Use this brush to paint the ball as shown below.

Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the thumbnail of the circle layer (ball blank) to create a selection, as shown in the figure.

Then make sure that the last layer on which you applied Brush (Brush) is active, and click at the bottom of the layers palette, on the iconAdd layer mask (Add layer mask).

Install Blend mode (Blending mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay).

Now we have to make the ball mount. Select Pen (Pen Tool) (P), set it to Layer – figure (Shape Layers) in the settings panel and make the following form, as shown in the figure.

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Inner shadow (Inner Shadow):

Apply Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Click on Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor) in the settings panel to open the gradient editor and set the colors as in the image below. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We get the following result:

Using the same tool, create the following form.

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Click on Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor) in the settings panel to open the gradient editor and set the colors as in the image below. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

This is what should happen.

Next we need to draw a ring. First, draw the first ellipse using the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool). Press key Alt or select Subtract from the shape area (Subtract from shape area (-)) in the settings panel and draw another ellipse to subtract the image from the center of the ring, as shown in the figure below. Tilt the ring using the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T).

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Click on Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor) in the settings panel to open the gradient editor and set the colors as in the image below. Click OK to close the dialog box. Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor).

We get the following result:

Group all the layers that belong to the toy (press CTRL to select the required layers and hold down the left mouse button and drag the selected layers to the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers palette. Make two copies of the group and choose the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T) to resize copies, and arrange as in the image below.

Create a new layer and using the tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) (M), make the following selection. Fill it with black, using a tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) (G).

Apply the following filter on the layer Filter-> Blur-> Gaussian Blur (Filter-> Blur-> Gaussan Blur).

We got a shadow.

And then apply Filter-> Blur-> Motion Blur (Filter-> Blur-> Motion Blur).

That’s what we did.

The same method will create a shadow under the other toys.

Create a new layer and select a soft round. Brush(Brush) white.

Use this brush to create glowing elements on toys.

Let’s write the text for our greeting card. Choose a tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool) (T). Select a font, size and color in the symbol panel.

Write something like “Merry Christmas” on canvas. Press Enter to apply the text.

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Shadow (Drop Shadow):

This is what should happen.

Now make a rectangle under the text using the tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) (U), color # 1F0301.

Add a layer mask by clicking at the bottom of the layers palette on the iconAdd layer mask (Add layer mask) and click CTRL + I, to invert colors. After that choose soft round Brush (Brush) white color.

Paint over the mask with this brush to get the same effect as in the image below.

Write the second part of the congratulations. Choose a tool Horizontaltext (Horizontal Type Tool) (T). Select a font, size and color in the symbol panel.

Write something like “New Year” on the canvas. Press Enter to apply the text.

Create a new layer and select a soft round. Brush (Brush) white color (Opacity of the brush up to 15%).

Use this brush to create circles. Place this layer under the layers with toys and text.

Install Blend mode (Blending mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay).

Create a new layer and select a soft round brush.

Use this brush to paint the reflection of toys, color # FF4620 (Opacity 50%).

Install Blend mode (Blending mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay).

Using the same method, on the new layer, paint the reflection again, brush color # FFB800.

Install Fill (Fill) to 76% for this layer and change the blending mode to Hard mix (Hard Mix).

In the next step we will need brushes from the archive to the lesson.
Create a new layer, download the downloaded brushes, select the following brushes from the set:

Use these brushes to create shining white stars.

Click on the icon Create a new adjustment layer or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers palette and select, Curves (Curves) to adjust the shape of the curve, as shown in the image below, to make small color adjustments. Place the layer under the text with the text “Merry Christmas”.

This is a great postcard.
