The creation of this author’s lesson was inspired by the elegant postcards by David Arts.
Let’s start by creating a new document (Ctrl + N) in Adobe Photoshop, measuring 1900px by 1200px (RGB color mode) with a resolution of 72. Use the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) (G) to fill with color # 231001 a new background layer.

Then we have to create a pattern that will be used as a texture. Create a new document (Ctrl + N) sized 152px by 141px (RGB color mode) with a resolution of 72. Select a tool Arbitrary shape (Custom Shape Tool) (U) on the toolbar, and on the options bar, click The form (Shape) to open the selection menu. Find the 5 ending star (5 Point Star) at the bottom of the menu, and then double-click on the shape of the image to select it.

Click and drag to make stars, as shown in the image below.

Move on Editing-> Definepattern (Edit-> Define Pattern). Enter a name for the pattern in the dialog box. Let’s go back to the main document and create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) then move on Edit-> Run Fill (Edit-> Fill). In the Fill dialog box, select the Pattern you created from the menu and click OK.

At the bottom of our document, draw a rectangle using the tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) (U).

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

Click on the color bar to open. Gradient editor (Gradient Editor) and set the colors as in the picture below. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We get the following result.

Go back to the layer containing the stars. Set the Fill to 0% for this layer and click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel to select Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

Click on the color bar to open. Gradient editor (Gradient Editor) and set the colors as in the picture below. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We have the following background.

In the next step, we will use the next floral vector clipart from the Vecteezy website. Download a vector clipart and paste it into your document by making multiple copies (Ctrl + J) to make a pattern. Use the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T) to place the clipart, as shown in the image.

Group together all the layers that make up the pattern (hold CTRL to select the required layers and hold the left mouse button while dragging the selected layers onto the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers panel. Install Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Linear light (Linear Light).

Add a mask to the layer by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel, then select Soft Round Brush (Brush) in black (set the Opacity to 15% in the options bar).

Draw on the mask with this brush to hide the edges of the pattern, as shown below.

Next we will create a New Year’s toy using the tool. Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U). Color # D10508.

We get the following result.

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Inner shadow (Inner Shadow):

Add Internal glow (Inner Glow):

Apply Stroke (Stroke):

We get the following result.

Using the same tool, we will make the next element of our toy.

Then we have to create the next layer of decoration for the toy, using Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U).

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Inner shadow (Inner Shadow):

Apply Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Click on the color bar to open. Gradient editor (Gradient Editor) and set the colors as in the picture below. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We get the following result.

Take the same tool and make the next item.

Set the Fill to 35% for this layer.

Add a mask to the layer by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel, then select Soft Round Brush (Brush) in black (set the Opacity to 10% in the options bar).

We draw on the mask using this brush to hide the next zone on the layer, as shown in the image below.

Next we draw a highlight on the right side of the toy, use the same Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U) to draw the first ellipse in white. Press the Alt key or select Subtract the figure area (-) (Subtract from shape area (-)) in the parameters panel and draw two more ellipses to halve the shape, as shown in the figure.

Set the Fill to 35% for this layer.

Insert layer mask, as we did in the previous example, when drawing the top flare. Select Soft Round Brush(Brush) and paint on the mask to hide a bit of the edge of the last flare, as shown in the figure.

Next we will mount our toy, select the tool. Pen (Pen Tool) (P), set the drawing mode to Layer – figure (Shape Layers) in the settings panel and make the following shape, as shown in the figure. Place this layer under the previous layer related to the toy.

Now we will make another fastener using the previously used tool. Pen (Pen Tool) (P). Place this layer above the mounting layer, but below the layer with the toy.

Using Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U), make a small ring for mounting. First we will draw the first ellipse. Then press the Alt key or select Subtract the figure area (-) (Subtract from shape area (-)) in the options bar and draw another ellipse to cut the middle part of the ring, as shown in the figure. Place the layer under the layers containing the toy and its mount.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and select Soft Round (Soft Round) Brush (Brush) white (Brush Opacity – 10%).

Use this brush to paint the background, as in the image below. Place a layer under the group with a pattern.

On the next new layer we will use the Hard Round. Brush (Brush).

And Soft Round (Soft Round) Brush(Brush).

Use this brush to paint more highlights on toys and background. Choose a different Opacity for the Brush (Brush).

Now we need a set of brushes from the archive.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and load the downloaded brushes, select the following brushes from the set light_brushes_2.

Use these Brushes (Brush) to create white stars (Opacity) of the brush – 60%.

Write a greeting text for your postcard. Choose a tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool) (T). Select a font, size and color in the symbol panel.

Write something like “Happy New Year!”. Press Enter to apply the text.

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Shadow (Drop Shadow):

Apply Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Click on the color bar to open. Gradient editor (Gradient Editor) and set the colors as in the picture below. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

That’s what we did.

Press the button Create a new adjustment layer or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select, Curves (Curves) to adjust the shape of the curve, as shown, to make small color adjustments.
