Need new wallpapers for your desktop? Here is another cool lesson about how to create your own wallpaper. In this lesson we will focus more on shapes, scaling, and groups of layers. Before we start drawing our wallpapers, take a look at the end result, this is what we will strive for.
Step 1. Create a new document 1024 x 768. Set the foreground color to # 683c19 and the background color on # 341906. Select Gradient tool (gradient) (G) and set it to Radial gradient (radial gradient). Now fill our background with this gradient (from center to edge).
Step 2. Create a new layer. Choose a tool Rectangular marquee tool (rectangular selection) (M). Select the bottom of the image (1/2). Set foreground color to # 2d1807. Choose a tool Gradient (gradient) and set it to “Foreground to Transparent” “Foreground to Transparent” and apply the gradient to the selected area (top-down)
Step 3. Create a new layer. Select Ellipse tool (oval shape) (U) to create circles. Hold down the “Shift” to create a perfect circle, as well, if you do not release this button, then all the figures will be on the same layer. See photo below. Rename the layer as “Mountain”.
Step 4. Right-click on the layer with mountains in the layers palette and select “Rasterize Layer”. Choose a tool Eraser (eraser) (E). Adjust the opacity of the brush by 30%, and remove the lower parts of the circles.
Step 5. Create a new layer. Set foreground color to # 327d76. Select Ellipse tool (oval shape) (U) and create an ellipse shape. Name the layer “Body”.
Step 6. Select Direct selection tool (contour editing) (A). Click on the bottom of the oval and drag it up a bit. See image below for details.
Step 7. Now let’s add eyes for our geeks. Select Ellipse tool (oval shape) (U) and create a circle. See the steps below. Draw each circle on a new layer. There should be a total of four circles, the name of the layers 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Step 8. Put layers 1, 2, 3 and 4 into a group, to do this, select all 4 layers, then press the key combination Ctrl + G. Now that all four layers are in the group, duplicate the group (command line – create a duplicate group). Select the original group and move it slightly to the left and below from the central eye. Switch to Edit> Transform> Scale (Edit> Transform> Scale.) Use about 60% in width and 60% in height.
Step 9. Now add the Crank Mouth. Select Line tool (line) (U), and draw a horizontal line. Select Add Anchor Point Tool (add point) and add an anchor in the center of the line and drag it down. See figure below. Name the layer “Mouth”.
Step 10. At this stage, we are still working with the mouth. Select the “Body” layer, Right-click and select to rasterize the layer. Now hold down the CTRL and click on the “Mouth” layer icon (the body layer remains active). Then press the key DELETE. Now you can hide the “Mouth” layer.
Step 11. Set foreground color # a51313. Create a new layer below the “body” layer and name it “Tongue”. Select Ellipse tool (oval shape) and create an ellipse shape. See photo below.
Step 12. Now the teeth, set the color #FFFFFF. Select Rounded rectangle tool (rounded rectangle) (U) and adjust the radius to smooth 10 pixels. See photo below.
After you have done everything, your character will look like this.
Step 13. Let’s lighten the top of our character. Create a new layer above the “body” layer. Set foreground color to # 1b5751. CTRL + click on the layer with the body, it will create a selection. Now select Gradient tool (gradient) (G) and set it to “Foreground to Transparent” and linear gradient (Linear Gradient). Apply a gradient from top to bottom.
Step 14. Add legs. Create a new layer below the body layer and name it up to “feet”. Set foreground color # 215a55.Choose Rounded rectangle tool (rounded rectangle) (U) and use it to create legs. See photo below.
Step 15. Now the shadows. Create a new layer under the “Feet” layer. Set foreground color # 261304 and choose Ellipse tool (oval shape) (U), and draw a thin ellipse shape to create a shadow.
Step 16. For this step, select all layers except the background and press Ctrl + G so that all layers are in the group. We will add new characters in different colors.
Duplicate the group and move it to the left with Move Tool (move) (V). Let’s go Edit> Transform> Scale (Edit> Transform> Scale) and set the width to 75%, and the height to 75%. For body in this group use color # b5780f and # 85590d for legs. You can customize the same color on the eyes if you want.
Step 17. Duplicate the group with the orange character and move the duplicate group to the right side. At this stage, we can change one of the eyes. To change it, hide the right eye, then select Line tool (line) and create a line on the right side. After that select Add Anchor Point Tool (add point) Then add a point between the line and drag it up.
Step 18. Now create a conversational cloud for the green wonder. Create a new layer and name it “Talk”. Set color # e8e0bc. Select Ellipse tool (oval shape) (U) and create an oval. Select Add Anchor Point Tool (add point) and add 3 attachment points on the lower left side of the form and drag the center point down. See photo below.
Step 19. Duplicate this layer, then select the original layer. Change the layer color to # c8b58d. We go to Edit> Transform> Scale (Edit> Transform> Scale) and adjust the width to 110% and height to 110%.
Step 20. Now let’s add some text inside the bubble. I use “LOL!” The font is Rockwell (but you can use your own).
This is a complete version of the wallpaper.
Finally, everything is ready. Thank you for reading this lesson. Hope you like it.
