In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a 3D text effect in the form of an octopus. You will also learn how to apply octopus skin texture and light reflection on 3D letters.
All octopuses alphabet and font usage examples.

Create a new Photoshop document with 1200 x1800px options, Resolution (Resolution) 300pixels / inch. You can choose a different size, but some layer style settings for letters depend on the size and resolution of the document.
The shape of the octopus letters is based on bold and round font. Anja eliane . Enter a letter (for each new letter, use a separate layer), for this size of Photoshop document, select a font size of about 130pt.
Rasterize the letter and change its shape with a regular round brush and eraser. Draw a small sucker and a twisted end of the letter.
To create smooth and even edges for a converted letter, you can convert it to a vector shape using Illustrator, but you can leave the letter in a raster state. In order to create a 3D layer, I used another smaller document with a little empty space. You will find this document (3d_letters.psd) in the archive with the materials for the lesson.
To create a 3D letter go to the menu. 3D> Repousse (3D> Embossing). If you are working with a vector, make an active layer thumbnail and go to the menu 3D> Repousse> Selected path (3D> Embossing> Dedicated contour). If you have a rasterized layer, select the letter and add a layer mask. Make an active layer mask and go to the menu 3D> Repousse> Layer Mask (3D> Embossing> Layer Mask).
AT Repousse Shape Presets (A set of pieces of coinage) choose Inflate sides (Swollen sides).
Open the 3D layers panel Window> 3D (Window> 3D). Make active Scene (Scene) at the top of the 3D panel, then from the drop-down menu Quality (Quality) select Interactive (Painting) (Interactive (Drawing)).
Apply the following settings only for the selected material. Front Inflation Material (Front bloating)
Load textures skin_pattern.psb for Diffuse (Scattering) and skin.psb for Bump (Relief)
Active tab Light (Light) at the top of the 3D panel. Click on the arrow symbol in the upper right corner and select the item in the submenu Replace Lights Presets (Replace sets of light). As a new pattern, apply 3D-shine (octopus1.p3l) from raw materials.
After applying all the settings, return to the tab Scene (Scene) and in the dropdown menu Quality (Quality) select Ray traced final (Final ray tracing)
If you want to add more glare of light on the surface of the tentacles, duplicate the layer with the 3D letter. In dropdown menu Quality (Quality) will choose again Interactive (Painting) (Interactive (Drawing)) for this layer.
Apply the same Lights Presets (Sets of light), but use other settings for Front Inflation Material (Front bloating)
Go back to the layer with the textured 3D letter, rasterize and place this shape back into the main Photoshop document. Do the same with the “black and white” layer.
Go to menu Image> Auto Contrast (Picture<Автоконтраст). Затем дублируйте слой с буквой 4 раза и расположите «черно-белый» слой выше всех слоев.
Make the 2nd duplicate active (we will use the 1st layer to create the shadow). Apply the following style effects to this layer: Inner glow (Internal glow), Bevel and Emboss (Embossed), Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay).
We don’t need the second layer so much, but you can add a translucent reflection from nearby letters and a glow effect. Specify Opacity (Opacity) 80% and Fill (Fill) 0%
You can find this template in the archive with materials for the lesson (octopus_dots.pat).
Here are the settings for the 3rd duplicate, specify Opacity (Opacity) 100% and Fill (Fill) 0%.
Next, make active the “black and white” layer. Go to menu Image> Adjustments> Levels (Image> Correction> Levels). Make the layer more contrast.
Change the blending mode to Linear Dodge (Add) (Linear light (add)) withOpacity (Opacity) 25%
Return to the first duplicate of the letter to create a shadow. Move this layer a couple of pixels to the right and 1px up.
Then apply a filter to the shadow layer. Gaussian blur (Gaussian blur)
Use similar actions to create other letters. We now turn to create eyes.
Create a round shape
Specify Fill (Fill) 0% and apply the following parameters. Use the following pattern. Strings (Strings).
Create a small circle on a new layer.
Duplicate the first large layer with a circle and place it above the layer with a small circle. Apply the blending options to the new layer:
All letters are shown below.
You can rotate and move the letters or place them on an oval plate.
The last small detail – the letters are reflected on the white glossy surface of the plate
Load selection of all letters (Ctrl + Shift + click on layer thumbnails). Go to menu Edit> Copy Merged (Edit> Copy merged data). Place the layer with the copied letters above the layer of the plate, but below the real letters, move this layer slightly down. Specify Opacity (Opacity) 30%.
Customize Levels (Levels) for this layer to make it lighter.
And here is the result!
