Combine two styles in one collage

Today we will create a stunning collage that combines elements of photography and textures that will help us create a composition from the modern and ancient style.

Step 1. Create a new document (600X650px).
Load the texture of crumpled paper, and reduce the layer opacity to 40%. Next we go Filter – Sharpness- Sharpness (filter> sharpen> sharpen) to highlight texture details.

Step2 Upload an image with mountains. Move it to our document, name this layer “mountains”.

Next, go Layer – Layer Mask – Show All (layer> layer mask> reveal all). Using a large black brush (40% opacity, 0% stiffness) paint over the top of the mountains and soften the edges along the ridge. Then, reduce the layer opacity to 40%.

Step3 Next, upload an image with clouds. Repeat the same technique as in the previous step to combine your entire composition:

Step 4. Now, create a new layer and name it “background light”. Using a radial gradient from white to transparent, drag the left mouse button from the center of the document. Next, reduce the layer opacity to 65%.

(Translator’s Note: pick a tool gradient (gradient), set the color-from white to transparent, set the top toolbar radial gradient (radial gradient) and with the left mouse button drag the radial gradient line from the center to the outer edge of the document).

Stepfive. Next, using a small gray brush with a hardness of 100%, draw a series of dots on your document.

Then, using the tool line (line tool), line thickness 1px, connect all points with gray lines. Reduce the opacity of the point and line layers to about 30-50%.

(Translator’s note: do not forget to create a new layer before you draw points, when you draw lines, be sure that the shape layer window is activated in the top toolbar, as soon as you connect all the points with lines, select all layers with lines and click Ctrl +E, to combine them).

Step6 Upload an image with a bust. Any convenient tools for you, select the bust and drag it to our document. Center, resize if necessary:

Step 7. Next, apply adjustment layers to the bust layer Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation), Levels (levels), and Exposure (exposure).

It is very important that a clipping mask should be applied for each adjustment layer, so the entire correction will be applied only to the bust layer. To do this, just go Layer – create clipping mask (layer> apply clipping mask).

Installations for the correction layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation):

Hue: 0
Saturation: -90
Brightness (Lightness): 0

Installations for the correction layer Levels (Levels):

28 / 0.96 / 233

Installations for the correction layer Exposure (Exposure):

Exposure: +0.38
Offset: 0
Gamma Correction (Gamma-Correct): 1.02

(Translator’s note: you can, as an author, first apply adjustment layers (layer – new adjustment layer (layer- new adjustment layer), and then create clipping masks for each individual adjustment layer. Or you can immediately apply a mask with a mask to the bust layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue / Saturation (Layer-Adjustment layer – Hue / Saturation), when the window pops up, check the box to create a clipping mask).

Stepeight. Next, duplicate the bust layer, move it on top of the adjustment layers. If necessary, apply clipping masks to each individual adjustment layer again.
Change the blending mode of the duplicated layer to Hard light (hard light) and reduce the opacity of the layer to 25%.

(Translator’s note: after you move the duplicated layer to the top, for each adjustment layer, apply BUTlt +Ctrl +G).

Step9. Next, upload an image with a spiral staircase. Using tool lasso or pen (lasso or pen tool) gently cut the stairs, including the space through which the background image would be viewed (for example: the space between the railing).

Then, apply a layer mask to the “ladder” layer and, using an average black brush (30% opacity), process the upper part of the ladder as if it is dissolved in the bust.

Step 10. Next, apply adjustment layers to the “ladder” layer. Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation), Levels (levels). Apply a clipping mask to each adjustment layer, so that they are applied only to the “ladder” layer.

Also, you notice that the color of the stairs is slightly different from the color of the bust. To fix this, apply a color overlay to the “ladder” layer (See also settings below):

Installations for the correction layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation):

Hue: 0
Saturation: -90
Brightness (Lightness): 0

Installations for the correction layer Levels (Levels):

11 / 0.83 / 255

Layer Style – Color Overlay Settings:

Color (Color): 3d3a34
Opacity: 100%

(Translator’s note: command layer style (layer style) can be called in the bottom toolbar)

Step 11. And now, repeat the last step, but only reduce the size of the stairs and place it in the left part of the bust:

Step12. Next, open the “crumpled paper” texture and tool Oval area (circular marquee tool) highlight the perfect circle, tool Move (move (V) move to our document, place it on top of all layers.

Next, go Filter- Plastic (filter> liquefy). The specific settings at this stage are not so important, we will mainly use the tools wrinkling / bloating pucker / bloat tools along the edges of our texture circle, to create a wavy and distorted shape:

Step13. Then, duplicate our texture circle 2 times, move the duplicates to different places and resize them. Merge all layers with texture circles into one layer and name it “texture circles”:

(Translator’s note: select all the layers with circles and click Ctrl +E)

Step14. Next, apply an adjustment layer on top of your texture layer. Apply a clipping mask to the adjustment layer, so that the settings are applied only to the “texture circles” layer:

Installations for the correction layer Levels (Levels):

8 / 0.92 / 241

Step15. Next, apply different shape shapes using the tools rectangle / arbitrary shape marquee / shape tools). Fill color (d30000). Next, change the blending mode of these layers to Multiplication (multiply). This should give an abstract effect to our composition:

Step 16. Create a new layer and name it “white glow”. Using a radial gradient, from white to transparent, slightly pull the left mouse button over our statue. Reduce the opacity of this layer to 60%. This should give our statue a slightly subtle, but alluring light.

Create a new layer and name it “color glow”. Using a radial gradient, from yellow and red to transparent, slightly pull the left mouse button near our statue. Then, change the blending mode to overlap (overlay) and reduce the layer opacity to about 25%.

Step17 Create a new layer and name it “faces.” Let’s go Editing – perform a stroke (edit> stroke) and set the width to 10px, color # 858585, position relative to the border (location): inside (inside).

(Translator’s note: before you apply stroke,on a new layer using the tool rectangular area (rectangular marquee tool (M)) select our image, and then apply – perform a stroke).

We have turned out beautiful faces:

Step18. Next, apply the last adjustment layer to enhance the contrast of the image:

Installations for the correction layer Levels (Levels):

9 / 0.89 / 232

Stepnineteen. Create a new layer below the “face” layer and name it “vignette”. Using a large, soft, black brush with an opacity of about 30%, process along the edges of our image, creating a vignette effect. This will help to draw the eyes of others to the center of the composition:

And we are done!
That’s what we did. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!
