The goal of this lesson is not so much the creation of the DVD Box, but another acquaintance with the 3D tools in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended and CS4 Extended, and although the 3D window is slightly different, this lesson can be done in both versions.
Step 1. First you need to prepare two images that will be on the front and back of the box. What kind of images these will be, you decide for yourself, I used for this a little modified screenshots of our site, you can look at this lesson and create your own picture. The only condition they must be: Size 370 by 490 pixels Resolution 100 pixels \ inch. Save them so that you can quickly find.
Step 2. Create a new document. 800 by 800 pixels Resolution 100 pix \ inch. On the toolbar, select the menu 3D, create new shape from layer – Cube
You will get such a figure
Rename this layer to “Front side”
Step 3. Now we have a 3D cube, which is not very similar to the box for the disc.
Activate 3D tools to change its shape.
You will have such a tool for managing a 3D object along axes.
Step 4. Now I want to digress a little and show what the different figures on these axes are for. Each of the arrows of this tool is responsible for one axis: Red – axis X Green – axisY Blue – axis Z. When you move the cursor to different parts of the axis arrows, some of them change their color to yellow, which means that one of the controls is activated.
1. If a sharp tip is activated, by holding the LMB, you can move the 3D object along the same axis.
2. When you hover the cursor over the second element – the arc, a circle appears, which shows that you can rotate the object around one axis.
3. The third element (let’s call it a rectangle) is the most interesting for our lesson, it changes the size of a 3D object along one of the axes.
4. Placing the cursor between the two arrows of the axes, a square will appear that allows you to move the 3D object along two axes (for example, when you need up and to the side, but you do not need to zoom in or out).
5. Well, the last element, this is the central cube connecting all axes, controlling it makes it possible to scale the 3D object.
Now that you know why you need controls on 3D axes, let’s try to make our cube look like a DVD Box.
Step 5. Turn your cube so that it becomes your side “In front“. This can be done simply by using ready-made commands in the position window on the toolbar.
Move the cursor to the axes, so that would activate the rectangle on the axis X.
Hold LMB and drag the cursor to the left until this side is 25-30 pixels wide.
Hint: can measure with the tool ruler, or put guides. If you decide to put guides, then do not forget that while you can not move the object in the direction not on one axis, so you can not move it to the guides.
Step 6. Using the position command window, rotate your object with the side “On right”. This will be the front side of our DVD Box, so you need to give it the corresponding rectangle shape. For this you need to put the guides: two horizontal at 145 and 655 pixels. and two vertical at 205 and 595 pixels. Now alternately activating the control rectangles on axes Y and Z (marked with a red circle in the picture) and clamping the paintwork,
stretch to guide along the axis Z, and squeeze to guide along the axis Y. When will you have such a figure
can remove guides.
Step 7. We have given the form, now we will insert the image that you have prepared for the front side of our DVD Box. To do this, in the layers palette, double-click on “Layer 1”
It will open as a new document with the title: Layer 1.psd
Download, in any way convenient for you (copy – paste, drag, etc.), in this document, the image that you have prepared for the front side.
Since the size of your document is 800 by 800 pixels, and the prepared image is 370 by 490, you need to adjust the size of this document to the inserted image. The easiest way to do this is by going to the menu. Image – Trimming …
Putting these settings here
Step8. As a rule, the insert with the pattern on the disc cases leaves a little space on the sides where we see the material of the box, try to repeat it. Navigate menu Image – Canvas size, or click combination Alt+Ctrl+C. In the window that opens, check the box opposite Relative. This will allow us to avoid mathematical calculations, and will give the command to Photoshop, how many pixels to increase the canvas. Deliver: 20 pixels wide and height 20 pix.
Now around your image appeared edging with transparent pixels. Select them with a magic wand, click on the keyboard. ”D” (to return the default colors) and Alt+Backspace (to fill the selection with the main black color). Deselect.
Close the document “Layer 1” , you will see a confirmation window, click Yes.
Step 9. As you can see, the front side has changed, now we need an inscription on the end of the box. Double click on “The material above is the default texture. ” so that it opens in a new document.
Take the tool Rectangle selection, switch style to: Specified dimensions and set the values: Width 30 pixels, Height 510 pixels. Click anywhere in the document. Fill the selection with the main (black) color. Without removing the selection, take the tool Vertical text
change the color to white. Font size 12-24 (it depends on how much you want to write). Put the cursor at the top of the bar and write your text. When the text is ready, deselect, merge all layers and repeat Trimming how in Step 7.
Close the document. The material above is the default texture.psd “
Step 10. Using 3D axes, move your object to the right. To do this, move the cursor so as to activate the sharp tip on the axis Y(in the picture in the red circle), hold the LMB and drag the cursor to the right,
so that your object moves as shown.
Now it needs to be rotated a little. This can be done in two ways. First: Move the cursor to the axes so that the arc on the axis is activated. Y(You will see a yellow bar as shown.)
turn the object a little to the right
Second: Press the “right” arrow on the keyboard, the object will rotate. But I don’t really like this method, as the rotation takes place by jerks by several degrees at once.
Now using the tip on the axisZ and the central square, lift the object up and slightly reduce its size.
Step 11. As you can see, the brightness of the front side is different from the brightness that was on your prepared image. To correct this deficiency let us cover the lighting of a 3D object.
Open the 3D menu.
Select the first light source (in Figure 1), switch the source from infinite to directed (in Figure 2). To make it easier to navigate, turn on the display 3D-Sveta and 3D-base plane (in Figure 3).
Step 12. Now you have a grid on which you can navigate and the visible light source (circled in red in the figure.)
Right click on the light control tools, it will open three tools (in version CS 5, axes can be used).
Using that you need to move and rotate the light source, so that it shines in the center of the 3D object, while also illuminating the end side with the inscription. In this case, I can not give you exact instructions, it all depends on your image and skills with the mouse. The result should look something like this.
Now you need to pick up Diffuse, Illuminance Center and Intensity. This is best done in such a sequence. I got these parameters like this: Dispersion 90% Illumination center 45% Intensity 1.1.
You may have different parameters, it strongly depends on the color and brightness of your image. Now you can turn off the display of 3D light and 3D plane of the base.
Step 13. In the window stories take a picture and immediately put it as a source for archival brush.
Step 14. Go back to the layers palette and make two copies of your 3D layer. Rename one copy to “Reflection”. The second in “The wrong side. Make it your main layer “Front side”, was the top. Leave it visible and unplug the rest.
Hint: To leave only one layer visible with one click, hold down Alt and click on the Layer 1 eyelet.
Step 15. If you now enlarge your image a little, you will notice that the upper part of our box is a ladder.
To remove this, go to the 3D menu, and switch the quality to: Final ray tracing. We’ll have to wait a little while processing takes place, at this time you can’t do anything in Photoshop, otherwise the tracing will stop. When you notice that the top edge has become smoother and can no longer look like a ladder, it can stop processing just by clicking the mouse.
Now rasterize the layer “Front side”, for this click rmb on “Front side”, and select the command Rastrirovat 3D.
Step 16. After tracing, the image on the front of the box completely blurred and lost sharpness. To return him to a normal look, we use the picture taken in Step13. Take the tool Archive brush (Y), Hardness 100%
By changing the size of the brush, carefully, without affecting the edges of the box, restore the image.
Step 17. Activate the layer “Wrong side”, turn on its visibility. Base layer visibility “Front side” for now disconnect. Take the tool “Turn 3D object ” using arc on axis Y , turn it straight. Now you need to replace the image with the one you prepared for the back side of the DVD Box. To do this in the layers palette in the layer “The wrong side , double click on “Layer 1 ”,
as in the seventh step of this lesson, it will open in a new document. Load into the opened document, the image that you have prepared. Insert it so that it replaces what was, but did not block the black stroke. Close the document “Layer 1” . Rasterize the layer “The wrong side .
Step 18. Turn on visibility for the layer “Front side” (but the layer must remain active Wrong side)
Take the tool Move (V), Move the inner side of the fabric to the left, so that it would overlap quite a bit with the first layer
Activate Free transformation(Ctrl+T). Reduce the layer “The wrong side to about 95-97 percent.
Step 19. Activate the layer “Reflection”. Repeat the beginning of the seventh step of this lesson, open in the new document “Layer 1” with the image of the front side of the DVD Box. Activate the free transformation (Ctrl + T) and apply the command: Flip Vertically. Close the “Layer1” document. Repeat these steps with “Material on top”, to reflect the inscription on the end of the box.
Step 20. Choose a tool Pan 3D an object .
Now using this tool, either a sharp tip on the axis “Z” move “Reflection” down so that it would touch its upper side, with the lower side of the “Front”.
As in Step 12 of this lesson, open the 3D palette and change the direction of the light so that it illuminates “Reflection”. Rasterize the layer “Reflection”.
Step 21 Turn off layer visibility “Reflection”. Activate the topmost layer “Front side”. Take the tool Clarifier with these settings: Range: Shadows. Exposure : 100%. Brush size: 10pix. Stiffness: 0%. Draw a line through the brightener from point 1 to point 2
To give the visibility of the rounded edges of the box. Pass the clarifier with less intensity on all edges of the front side. Then turn on the visibility of “Reflections”, treat with the clarifier the edges of the layer “The wrong side and “Reflection”.
Step 22 Create a new layer. Call it “Background” move it to the bottom of the layers palette and fill with white. Double click on the “Face” layer, call up the blending options. Apply Shadow with such parameters: Opacity 75.Displacement: 70. Swipe: 10. Size: 60. (These parameters may differ from those shown. It all depends on the brightness and size of your image.)
Now you need to remove the shadow where it should not be. This can be done in several ways, I will show you one. Place the cursor exactly on the sign of the overlay parameters on the “Face” layer. Right click and select the command: To form a layer. In the window that opens, click OK.
Now the shadow has become a separate layer,
and using Eraser You can delete it where needed.
Step 23 Merge layer Shadow with a layer Wrong side (Ctrl+E). Create a copy of this layer. (Ctrl+J) . Activate Free transformation(Ctrl+T), apply the command: Flip Vertically. Move the image of this layer down so that its top edge touches the bottom edge of the Wrong layer. In the layers palette, move this layer. “The wrong side of a copy”, so that it would be located between the layer “Reflection” and a layer of “Background”.
With the active layer “The wrong side is a copy, load layer selection Reflection (Ctrl + Cry on the miniature of the layer “Reflection”). Press Delete on the keyboard, it will delete everything that fell into the selection on the layer “The wrong side is a copy (otherwise it will disturb you in the next step). Deselect (Ctrl+D).
Step 24 It remains to give a reflection of transparency. To do this, add a layer “Reflection” mask the layer, take the gradient from black to white and drag it across the layer mask from bottom to top. If it seems to you that the reflection is not transparent enough, you can reduce the opacity of the layer to 50-70 percent.
Repeat this step with the “The wrong side is a copy. ”
Your DVDBox is ready.
I hope this tutorial has helped you learn a little new about the possibilities of using 3D, in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended.
