We continue to work on the cover for the magazine.
Step 15: Placement of characters
Turn on the visibility of the “Sun” group. Place it as shown below.
Turn on the group “Little Robo” (Little Robo). Arrange it as shown below.
Now draw a shadow to the character Robo. Create a shadow with the tool Ellipse (Ellipse) or Pen (Pen) (P), place it at the very bottom of this group. Set the color to # 000000, reduce Opacity (Opacity) layer up to 50%.
Include groups with other characters and arrange them exactly as shown in the image. Change their sizes, if they are large, click on the group and press Ctrl + T and reduce the size.
Add some more bees to the composition. Select the group with the bee and drag it to the icon Create a new layer (Create New Layer) in the layers palette. This action will create a duplicate group. Right click on the new group and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to Smart Object). We can create a duplicate easier using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + J. Create another copy and place the bees as shown in the image below.
Step 16: Curls
Create a New Group (Create New Group) and call it “Flourishes” (Curl), place it above the group “Bee” (Bee). Draw this simple shape with the tool. Pen (Pen) (P). Use any color.
Duplicate (Duplicate) layer a couple of times to achieve this result.
Apply Gradients (Gradient).
Right-click on the layer with the shape to which you applied Gradient (Gradient). Select Copy layer style (Copy Layer Style), right-click on another layer and select Paste style layer (Paste Layer Style). Double click on the style to open the dialog box. Layer styles (Layer Styles) and apply the following gradient settings. Do not touch Stamping (Bevel). Just adjust Gradient (Gradient).
Repeat the process.
Change the group location.
As you can see, curlicues are located above the sun and mountains. I want them to look like they are coming out from behind the sun. To do this, we need to mask overlapping areas. Add a Layer mask (Add Layer Mask) to the folder and proceed as directed.
Duplicate (Duplicate) group “Flourishes” (Curl). Press the key combination Ctrl + T and right-click on the selected area, select Flip horizontally (Flip Horizontal). Expand a little and place as in this image.
Step 17: Adding Lighting
Let’s add a little lighting behind the sun. Create New layer (New Layer), rename it to “Highlight” and place it under the cloud layer. Set the color, here I used # fff9d5, and with a large soft brush I added some lighting.
Step 18: Texturing – Background
Open the file with halftone textures in Illustrator. Copy this pattern by pressing Ctrl + C.
Return to Photoshop and paste the texture by pressing Ctrl + V. Paste it like Smart object (Smart Object).
Place it under the “Highlight” layer and change its position.
Open Texture 1, discolor (Desaturate) using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + U. And put it in the main file. Place it above the “Clouds” layer. Set the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), and Opacity (Opacity) set to 30%.
Step 19: Texturing – The Sun
Open Texture 2. Create a selection with the tool. Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee). Press Ctrl + Shift + U to discolor (Desaturate). Press Ctrl + L to load the dialog box. Levels (Levels), apply settings.
Now copy the selected area, paste it into the main file. Place it above the “Sun” group.
Change texture blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply). Add a Layer mask(Layer Mask) and mask the rough edges.
Step 20: Texturing – Mountains
Open Texture 3 and create a selection. Discolor (Desaturate) him and go to Levels (Levels) by pressing Ctrl + L. Use the values below.
Copy and paste it into the main file. Place this layer in the “Mountains” group above the layer with mountains (left).
Press Ctrl + T, right click inside the bounding box, select Distortion (Distort). Now change the upper right corner so that it looks like the one in the image.
Change the texture mapping mode to Multiplication (Multiply). Decrease Opacity (Opacity) up to 70%. Apply a layer like Clipping mask (Clipping Mask) to the mountains. Repeat the texture mapping process with other mountains, simply duplicate the texture and apply it as a clipping mask to the corresponding layer. For the mountains on the right, I reflected the texture horizontally.
Step 21: Texturing – Earth
Apply the texture to the ground. We will be guided by the same methodology. Open Texture 4 and discolor (Desaturate) her.
Place it in the main file above the “Above ground” group. This texture is vertical, rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise.
Press Ctrl + T and increase the texture until it covers the whole earth, holding down the Shift key. Then apply it as a clipping mask to the layer with the ground. Change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply).
Now duplicate the texture and apply it to another layer. Just press Ctrl + J to duplicate the texture and place it in the “Below ground” group. Place it directly above the ground layer. Place it so that it covers the whole earth. Now apply it as a clipping mask to the layer with the ground, but since the layer with the ground is applied Layer styles (Layer Styles), this action will not give any results. Instead, hold down the Ctrl key and click on Vector mask (Vector Mask) layer with the ground to load the selection. Now go back to the texture, while the selection is still active and click on the icon. Add layer mask (Add Layer Mask) at the bottom of the layers palette. This action will create a layer mask.
Our image at the moment.
Step 22: Texturing – Plants
Open Texture 5. Select a piece, discolor it and increase the contrast using Levels (Levels). Use the same values as before.
Copy and paste the selection into the main file. Place this layer in the “Bushy plant” group at the very top.
Mask areas beyond the shape of the plant using Layer mask (Layer Mask). Download the selection by clicking on the plant vector mask, return to the texture, click on the button. Add layer mask (Add Layer Mask). Change the blending mode to Darkening basics (Color Burn), set Opacity (Opacity) 80%.
Add texture to other plants using the same technique. Apply any texture or simply duplicate and apply the previous ones.
Step 23: Adding Halftone Patterns
Create a new layer in the “Flourishes” group. Choose a tool Brush (Brush), set large Radius (Radius). Choose a nice pink color or # f00ebfa. Draw a point.
Go to Filter (Filter) – Registration (Pixelate) – Colored undertones (Color Halftone). Apply these settings. Change the blending mode to Overlap (Overlay).
Mask areas that extend beyond the curlicues. Hold Ctrl + Shift and click on all three. Vector masks (Vector Mask) groups to load a merged selection. Now click on the halftone texture and click on the button. Add layer mask(Add Layer Mask).
Now Duplicate (Duplicate) layer with a halftone pattern. Click on Masked layer (Layer Mask) and press Ctrl + I to invert Layer mask (Layer Mask). Click on the layer thumbnail, press Ctrl + Shift + U to discolor the layer. Press Ctrl + I to invert the layer. If the effect is not strong enough Duplicate (Duplicate) layer a couple of times.
Add another halftone pattern. Create New layer (New Layer) in the “Mountain” group. Set medium gray and add point. Apply a halftone pattern with the same settings as before. Follow the steps you see below.
Create black and white (black and white)Gradient ( Gradient). Apply a halftone pattern. Place it in the “Below ground” group. Place it above the ground layer. Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft Light). Mask unwanted areas by loading the selection from the layer with the ground.
Step 24: Add Custom Items
Open the file in Illustrator provided below. Copy and paste the figures into our file as Smart Object (Smart Object). You can apply to them Layer styles (Layer Styles). Once you finish working on them, group them into the “Custom elements” group. Place the group above the “Flourishes” group.
Step 25: Adding Paint Texture
Open the image 22.png from the “Drips and Spray Paint Pack”. Place it in the main file.
Use Layer mask (Layer Mask) to erase areas where paint appears too strong. Decrease Opacity (Opacity) up to 30%.
Duplicate (Duplicate) texture with paint. Press Ctrl + T, right-click inside the bounding box and select Flip Vertically (Flip Vertical). Place it at the bottom of the image. Select two layers and press Ctrl + G to group them, and rename the group to “Paint Texture”.
Download Drippy Spray Brushes. Create New layer (New Layer) under the group with the bees, take the brush in the form of a spray. Add stains. Change the blending mode to Hard light (Hard Light).
Step 26: Header
Now add a header. I chose the name “Artkind”. Create New group (New Group), titled “Title”. Place it at the very top of the layers palette. Choose a tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type) and type the text. To create your text, I used the font Myriad Pro family. You can choose any similar font. But always limit yourself to 2-3 fonts. Return Guides (Guides) to make sure the text does not go beyond the safe zone.
Ctrl + click on the text layer, go to menu Allotment (Select) – Modification (Modify) – To expand (Expand). Extend the selection by 9 pixels. Create New layer (New Layer) under the layer with the title and fill the selection with #ffffff or white color. Rename this layer to “Stroke” (Stroke).
Create New layer (New Layer) above the “Stroke” layer (Stroke). Paint it with a large soft brush of bright green color. Now apply this layer as a Clipping Mask to the “Stroke” layer. Change the blending mode of the “Stroke” layer (Stroke) to Light replacement (Lighten)
Step 27: Title Bar
Draw this shape with the tool Pen (Pen) (P) within the “Title” group. Add a caption.
Download brushes “Grungy Film Brushes”. Add a Layer mask (Layer Mask) to the title bar. Press D to set the default colors. Take any brush from the set offered. Paint over edges Masked layer (Layer Mask) to give the line a grunge look. Take a large soft brush and paint over it in the center of the title bar. Look at the image.
Step 28: Text
Create New group (New Group), called “Text” (Text) under the “Title” group. Add stripes. Add text in the upper bands.
Add month and year. I used the font Myriad Pro Condensed.
Copy and paste the barcode from the source files into the “Text” group. Place it as shown below.
Add some text with the tool Text (Type).
Add a separator. You can easily create it in Illustrator.
Step 29: Finishing Touches
Now add a vignette. Create New layer (New Layer) under the “Text” group (Text), called “Vignette” (Vignette). Take a large soft brush of color # 000000, paint over the edges of the document.
Change layer blending mode to Overlap (Overlay). At the bottom of the effect is a bit strong. Add a Layer mask (Layer Mask) to hide the effect.
Spend black and white (Black and white) Gradient (Gradient) inside the mask. Make sure the white is at the top.
Create New layer (New Layer) above the layer with the title. Add a nice pink color with a soft brush. Apply this layer as Clipping mask (Clipping Mask) to the layer with the title. Take the tool Eraser (Eraser). Choose a grunge brush from the “Grungy Film Brushes” set. Erase a little.
Download the selection of the layer with the contour of the sun (sun) and click on the layer with the title, click on the button Add layer mask (Add Layer mask). Look at the result.
Add a grunge effect to the stripes. Add a mask. Use grunge brushes to erase.
