Create an abstract wallpaper in Photoshop

Today I will show you some simple methods for creating abstract wallpapers for your desktop using brushes and working with blending modes.

Let’s start by creating a new document (Ctrl + N) in Adobe Photoshop 1280px by 1024px (RGB color mode) with a resolution of 72. Use the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) (G) to fill a new background layer with # 44082A.

On the next new layer we will use a soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B), you can create a new layer by pressing the key combination (Ctrl + Shift + N).

Use this brush to paint the background as in the picture below with the color # C22A3F.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and use soft round again here. Brush (Brush Tool) (B) which was mentioned above to continue to paint the background with color # 822957.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and fill it with # 74164D using the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) (G).

Add a layer mask by clicking on the Add layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel and apply the following filter on the mask: Filter-> Rendering> Clouds (Filter-> Render-> Clouds).

Now we need a photo of the model that looks like this, or, if you prefer, you can replace this image with your own.

Remove the background using your favorite tools such as Pen (Pen Tool) (P), Magic Wand Tool (W), Magnetic Lasso (Magnetic Lasso) (L) or even simple Filter-> Extract (Filter-> Extract) and paste it on a new layer in your main document.

Install Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Hard light (Hard Light).

Insert layer mask by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel and select soft round Brush (Brush) black.

We draw on the mask using this brush of different diameters to hide the model layer, as shown in the picture below (you can change the size of the brush with []).

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and select soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B).

Use this brush to paint the background as in the image below. Brush color # F941FF. Place this layer under the model layer.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and again use the soft round brush that was mentioned above to make a dark background around the model. Brush color # 3A0822. Place the layer under the model layer.

On the next new layer, we need to create a selection using the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) and place the layer under the model layer.

Choose soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B) to fill the selection with white color (Opacity of the brush – 15%).

Press Ctrl + D to deselect. We get the following result.

Using the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T), we have to tilt the created layer.

Make four copies of the last layer, using the key combination (Ctrl + J) and using Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T), place the copies as in the picture below.

Now we will group all the layers with lines (hold CTRL to select the required layers and hold down the left mouse button while dragging the selected layers to the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers panel.

Insert a mask on the group by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel and select soft round Brush (Brush) black.

We draw on the mask using this brush to hide the edges of the lines, as shown in the image below.

Install Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Lightening basics (Color Dodge).

Now we activate the tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) (U) draw a square with the color # C83233. Use the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T) to rotate it as in the image below. Place this layer under the model layer.

Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Drop Shadow:

Add Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Click on the color bar to open. Gradient editor (Gradient Editor) and set the colors as shown in the image below. Click OK to close the dialog box. Gradient editor (Gradient Editor).

We get the following result.

Make four more copies of the last layer and select Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T), to reduce each subsequent instance, placing them, as shown
below.

Join the group with all the layers with squares (hold CTRL to select the required layers and hold the left mouse button while dragging the selected layers to the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers panel.

Make sure the group you created is activated, selected in the layers panel, and holding the CTRL key, click on the thumbnail of the model layer to create a selection.

Insert layer mask by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel and press Ctrl + I to cut the squares.

Now we need to erase the squares behind the model, select the soft round Brush (Brush) black and draw on the mask to remove the squares on the left side.

We get the following result.

Using the tool Line (Line Tool) (U) (size – 1 pixel), we have to draw a lot of white rays, the layers should be placed under the model layer.

Install Blend mode (Blend Mode) on Overlap (Overlay) for each layer of the beam.

Now we will group together all the layers with rays (hold CTRL to select the required layers and hold the left mouse button while dragging the selected layers to the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers panel.

Insert a mask on the group by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel and select soft round Brush (Brush) black.

Use this brush to paint on the mask to hide the rays in the immediate area of ​​the model’s hair and face, as well as along the edges of the rays.

Click on the icon Create a new adjustment layer or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Curves to adjust the shape of the curve, as shown, to make some color adjustments.

We get the following result.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and select soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B).

Use this brush to paint the background on the right side of the model, as shown below. Brush color # A5004F (Brush Opacity – 15%).

Create a new layer again and use soft round. brush , To darken the edges of the document, brush with color # 340E21 (Opacity of the brush – 20%).

On the next new layer we choose a soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B).

Use this brush, To make the model’s body lighter, brush color # 8ADE00 (Opacity of the brush – 10%).

Install Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Linear Dodge (Linear Dodge).

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and select soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B).

Use this brush to draw four small circles of white color (Opacity of the brush – 15%). We must make the diameter of each next circle smaller. Place the layer under the model layer.

Install Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay).

Using the tool ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U), draw an ellipse in white.

Install Fill (Fill) up to 25% for this layer and change Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay). Click on the icon Add layer style (Add a layer style) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Internal glow (Inner Glow):

We get the following result.

Make a copy of the last layer (Ctrl + J) containing the ellipse and using the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T), enlarge the copy by moving it slightly to the left. We will change also Blend mode (Blend Mode) on Hard mix (Hard Mix) for the copy layer and also add Shadow (Drop Shadow):

We get the following result.

Now we will group together all layers containing ellipses (hold CTRL to select the required layers and hold the left mouse button while dragging the selected layers to the icon Create a new group (Create a new group) at the bottom of the layers panel. Install Opacity (Opacity) up to 47% for a group.

Make sure the created group is activated, is selected in the layers panel and holding
CTRL key, click on the model layer thumbnail to create a selection.

Insert layer mask by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel and press Ctrl + I to cut the ellipses. Use soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B) black for drawing on the mask, as we did with the rays and squares.

Click on the icon Create a new adjustment layer or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Curves (Curves) to adjust the shape of the curve, as shown, to make some color adjustments.

We get the following result.

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and select soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B).

Use this brush to paint on the waist of the model on the left side as well as on the lower part of the legs. Brush color # 40274E, (Brush Opacity – 10%).

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and select soft round Brush (Brush Tool) (B) to draw a set of stars.

We apply different diameters for the brush and different values. Opacity (Opacity).

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and with the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) (G), fill the layer with white. Insert layer mask by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel and apply the following filter to the mask Filter-> Rendering> Clouds (Filter-> Render-> Clouds).

Install Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay).

Make a copy of the layer that we have (Ctrl + J). Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) above the copy and select both layers in the layers panel while holding the Ctrl key. Then press CTRL + E to Merge layers (Merge Down).

Insert a mask on a rasterized layer by clicking on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel and select soft round Brush (Brush) black (set Opacity (Opacity) up to 20% in the parameters panel).

Use this brush to paint on the mask to hide the top of the layer, around the model, as shown below.

Click on the icon Create a new adjustment layer or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Curves (Curves) to adjust the shape of the curve, as shown, to make some color adjustments.
