Create an inscription from coins in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create an inscription from 3D coins using basic Photoshop shapes and 3D tools. Let’s start!

I was inspired to create this effect by numerous layer styles on the GraphicRiver website.

1. Create basic shapes.

Step 1

Create a new document of 1500 x 950 pixels. Take Ellipse Tool (U) (Oval), check that the top panel is set to Shape (Figure), and create a circle. After this we call the layer “Coin”.

Step 2

Take Custom Shape Tool (U) (Arbitrary figure) and inside the circle add any figure from the set with laurel wreaths.

Step 3

Via Direct Selection Tool (A) (Direct Selection) you can select and delete the anchor point of any part of the laurel wreath that you do not like or instead of which you want to add text.

Step 4

Experiment with the shape of the wreath until you get the most satisfying result for you.

Step 5

In the center of the coin we write a number using the tool. Text Tool (T) (Text). You can choose any text settings, depending on the type of coin.

In this case, the font used is Bodoni MT, size 120 pt, Tracking (Tracking) -60.

Step 6

Add more text in the part of the wreath where we removed the extra shapes. This time the font used is Poppins, size 20 pt, Tracking (Tracking) 200.

2. Add text to the work path.

Step 1

Draw another circle for the second coin, name the layer “Coin” and add any shape from the set of ornaments in the center.

I recommend giving meaningful names to each layer created. This will simplify the work and allow you to keep the layers panel in order.

Step 2

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the circle for the coin and reduce (Ctrl + T) the copy so that it is in the center of the original. On the top panel, configure the copy settings: disable Fill (Fill), click on the button for selecting the type of stroke and select More Options (Other options).

Select the point stroke and set it up as shown below.

Step 3

Again take Ellipse Tool (U) (Oval) and on the top panel we switch the drawing mode to Path (Circuit).

Create a round work path around the central ornament, then we will add text on it.

Step 4

Take Text Tool (T) (Text), click on the work path and write the text.

In this case, the font used is Indira K, size 17 pt, Tracking (Tracking) 10, we also write all words in capital letters.

Above, you have learned a few ideas about using tools for creating coins. Do not be afraid to experiment with different shapes, settings and fonts to get your unique result.

3. Create 3D layers

Step 1

Next to each layer with the figure apply 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Path (3D – New 3D extrusion from the selected contour). Then we apply to each text layer 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer (3D – New 3D extrusion from selected layer).

Step 2

Select all the 3D layers in the layers panel and go 3D – Merge 3D Layers (3D – Merge 3D layers).

4. How to work with a 3D scene

Step 1

To have access to the parameters of 3D objects, we need to open two panels: the 3D panel and Properties (Properties) (both are in the main menu Window (Window)).

The 3D panel contains a list of all the components of the scene and, if you select one of them, we can edit its parameters in the panel. Properties (Properties). Therefore, always pay attention to whether the desired object is selected before editing it.

Step 2

If activate Move Tool (V) (Move), a set of special 3D modes will appear at the top of the options bar.

If you select one of them, then with the selected object of the scene you can make certain manipulations (move, rotate, scale, etc.).

We will also use these modes to change the view from the camera.

5. Group 3D objects

Step 1

Select all the 3D components of the first coin in the 3D panel, in the upper right corner, click on the menu button and select Group Objects (Group objects).

Step 2

Group the components of the second coin.

We call groups as you wish. In the lesson we will create gold and silver coins, so the groups can be called “Gold” and “Silver.”

6. Configure 3D objects

Step 1

Select the circle objects of each coin. Then set the properties panel Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) by 10.

Step 2

Select the remaining components of the gold coin and set Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) by 3.

Step 3

Select the remaining components of the silver coin and set Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) by 2.

7. Adjust the capital

Step 1

On the 3D panel, select the circles of each coin and activate the tool. Move Tool (V) (Move) to allow access to 3D axes.

The arrows at the ends of the axes move objects, a small arc that goes further is responsible for turning, and with the help of a cube you can scale the object. The central cube from which the axes extend is needed for uniform scaling of the object. To perform an action with the axes, simply click on them and drag the mouse.

Step 2

Select the circle of the gold coin and on the properties bar at the top click on the tab Cap (Capital) to add coin borders.

Install Sides (Parties) on Front and Back (In the front and in the back), Bevel Width (Chamfer width) – by 5%, Angle (Angle) – at -23 and Contour (Contour) – on Cove-Deep (Deep groove).

Step 3

We choose a laurel wreath and the text “1999” of a gold coin, we set Bevel Width (Chamfer width) by 10% and Contour (Contour) – on Half Round (Semicircle).

Step 4

Select the text “10” gold coins, set Bevel Width (Chamfer width) by 25% and Contour (Contour) – on Half Round (Semicircle).

Step 5

Select the circumference of the silver coin, go to the tab Cap (Capital). Install Sides (Parties) on Front and Back (In the front and in the back), Bevel Width (Chamfer width) – 10%, Angle (Angle) – at -17 and Contour (Contour) – on Cove-Inverted (Inverted contour).

Step 6

Select the point contour of the silver coin and set Inflate – Strength (Bloating – Intensity) by 20%.

Step 7

Select the text and ornament of a silver coin and set Bevel Width (Chamfer width) by 5% and Contour (Contour) – on Half Round (Semicircle).

8. Moving 3D objects

Step 1

To see only the materials of the scene components, at the top of the 3D panel, click on the button Filter by: Materials (Filter by: Materials). Select all materials, click on the texture button Diffuse (Scattering) on ​​the property bar and select Remove Texture (Remove texture).

Step 2

Using the axes, adjust the position of the 3D objects.

Step 3

You can also go to the tab Coordinates (Coordinates) on the property bar and enter numeric values.

Step 4

You can switch between different types to view coins from different angles and make sure that everything is in place.

Step 5

Once again, make sure that the coins are completely finished, as it will be much more difficult to correct something later.

9. Create materials of gold and silver

Step 1

Select all the materials of the gold coin and create the gold material using the following settings (the color numbers are in RGB format):

  • Specular (Color of the flare): 241, 224, 155
  • Shine (Glitter): 50%
  • Reflection (Reflection): 50%

Step 2

Select all the materials of the silver coin and create the silver material using the following settings (the color numbers are in RGB format):

  • Specular (Color of the flare): 222, 223, 205
  • Shine (Glitter): 50%
  • Reflection (Reflection): 50%

Step 3

Choose Front Inflation Material (Material front bump) gold coin, click on the folder button opposite Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Load Texture (Load texture). Open the image “2.jpg” from the set with metal seamless textures.

Step 4

Click the texture button again Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Edit UV Properties (Edit UV properties).

Step 5

Configuring parameters Tile (Mosaic) and Offset (Offset) until we get the desired result.

Step 6

Click on the texture button Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Edit Texture (Edit texture).

Step 7

Add Fill Layer – New Fill Layer – Solid Color (Layer – New fill layer – Color) and select the color # f5cb71. Change layer blend mode to Linear Burn (Line dimmer).

Step 8

Select the remaining materials of the gold coin, click on the texture button Diffuse (Scattering) and in the list that opens, select the texture under the number “2”.

Step 9

Choose Front Inflation Material (Material front bump) silver coin, click on the texture button Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Load Texture (Load texture) to re-open the image “2.jpg”.

Step 10

Apply this texture to the rest of the silver coin materials.

10. Create relief material

Step 1

Choose Extrusion Material (Material extrusion) gold coin, then click on the folder icon next to the parameter Bump (Relief) and choose New Texture (New texture).

Step 2

Set the width and height of the document to 100 x 100 pixels and click OK.

Step 3

When a new document opens, duplicate the layer Background (“Background”).

Step 4

Double click on the copy of the layer to open the window Layer Style (Layer style), and apply Pattern Overlay (Overlay pattern). Choose a pattern with vertical lines of 10 pixels.

Save (Ctrl + S) the file and close it.

Step 5

Select the circumference of the gold coin and set Texture Mapping (Display texture) on Tile (Mosaic).

Step 6

Choose again Extrusion Material (Material extrusion) gold coins and go to the UV-properties of the parameter Bump (Relief).

Step 7

Apply the same texture Bump (Relief) with settings for material extrusion silver coin.

11. Create Object Instances

Step 1

Select both groups with silver and gold coins, click on them with the right mouse button and use Instance Object (Create Object Instances).

Instances of objects are, in fact, regular copies that inherit the parameters of the original, for example, the settings of materials, and are automatically updated when changes are made to the original.

Step 2

We add the word “Original” to the names of groups with original coins, so as not to get confused in copies. You can also hide the originals and save them as backup copies.

Step 3

Next we begin to form the text of the coins. Select a copy of the group with a gold coin and tab Coordinates (Coordinates) set X Rotation Angle (Angle of rotation on the X axis) at 90.

Step 4

In the upper right corner of the 3D panel, click on the menu button and select Move Object to Ground Plane (Move the object to the base plane).

We make the same manipulations with a silver coin: adjust the angle of rotation along the X axis and move it to the base plane.

12. Create text using groups of coins.

Step 1

Select the group and use the 3D-turn the coin to begin to form the text.

Step 2

If you will use the tab Coordinates (Coordinates), do not forget that you can enable / disable the parameter Uniform Scaling (Uniform scaling).

Step 3

Next, we continue to duplicate coins and transform them to create letters. For convenience, you can type the desired word in any sans serif font and navigate it.

The copying process can take a lot of time, as you constantly have to change the camera angle. Also, do not forget to move each coin to the base plane and adjust its location so that they do not intersect each other and the base plane.

The work can be simplified if you first place the coins next to each other, rather than stacking them, then add new copies on top, but make sure that all the coins lay horizontally.

Of course, it’s up to you how to create text and place coins. It all depends on the end result you want to get.

Step 4

Do not forget to group the coins of each letter so that the 3D panel is in order.

Step 5

Create all the necessary letters and for a more interesting result add around a few extra coins.

13. Add a background.

Step 1

Open the image with the boards, copy it and paste above the 3D layer with coins. Name the texture layer “Surface” and go to 3D – New Mesh from Layer – Postcard (3D – New mesh from layer – Postcard).

Step 2

Choose Current View (Current view) on the 3D panel and on the property bar on the menu View (View) find the name of the 3D layer.

Step 3

Select both 3D layers and merge them together.

Select the component with the texture of the tree, set X Rotation Angle (Angle of rotation along the X axis) by 90 and move it to the base plane.

After that, slightly change the position along the Y axis, up to about 0.1, so that after rendering, there are no problems with the display.

Step 4

Select a component with a tree texture, in the upper part of the properties panel, go to the tab Mesh (Grid) and uncheck Cast Shadows (Overlay the shadows).

Adjust the position and size of the texture so that it covers the area around the text. After that, if necessary, you can adjust the UV-properties of the texture Diffuse (Scattering) or open the texture file in a separate window and apply Image – Reveal All (Image – Show All) to make sure that the scaling did not affect the quality of the texture.

You do not need to fill the entire document with the texture, because later for the final result, we still cut off a part.

Step 5

Select the wood texture material in the 3D panel, delete the texture Opacity (Opacity), if there is one, and adjust other parameters:

  • Specular (Color of the flare): 210, 196, 164
  • Shine (Glitter): 50%

14. Create relief from scattering texture.

Step 1

Click on the folder icon next to the parameter Bump (Relief) and choose Generate Bumps From Diffuse (Create a relief from a diffuse texture).

Step 2

We adjust parameters in a window Generate Bump Map (Create a relief map) and click OK.

Step 3

As a result, we get a more realistic effect.

Before adjusting the lighting, be sure to choose the final location of the camera.

15. Adjust the lighting and render the scene.

Step 1

Choose a component Infinite Light (Infinite Light) and install Intensity (Intensity) by 50% and Shadow – softness (Shadow – Smoothing) – by 30%.

Step 2

Via Move Tool (V) (Move) move the light source until we find a good location, or use the tab Coordinates (Coordinates).

Step 3

Choose a component Environment (Wednesday), click on the texture button IBL (Isbi) and choose Replace Texture (Replace texture). We find the image with a room of additional materials.

Step 4

Install Intensity (Intensity) by 90% and using Move Tool (V) (Move) choose the most successful placement of the texture.

Step 5

Click on the texture button IBL (Isbi) and choose Edit Texture (Edit texture) to open the texture in a separate window.

Add an adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue/ Saturation (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue / Saturation). Install Saturation (Saturation) at -60, save (Ctrl + S) the file and close it.

Step 6

Move on 3D – Render 3D Layer (3D – Rendering the 3D layer). Rendering may take some time, but you can stop it at any time by pressing the Esc key.

After rendering, right-click on the 3D layer and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object) in order not to accidentally change the layer.

16. Apply General Color Correction

Step 1

Add an adjustment layer Vibrance (Juiciness) and install Vibrance (Juiciness) at -5.

Step 2

Add an adjustment layer Selective Color (Selective color correction) and customize it:

Reds (Red)

  • Cyan (Blue): 7
  • Yellow (Yellow): 10
  • Black (Black): 10

Yellows (Yellow)

  • Magenta (Purple): 3
  • Yellow (Yellow): -10
  • Black (Black): 10

Neutrals (Neutral)

  • Cyan (Blue): 3
  • Yellow (Yellow): -1
  • Black (Black): 1

Blacks (Black)

  • Cyan (Blue): 3
  • Yellow (Yellow): 5
  • Black (Black): 15

Step 3

Add an adjustment layer Brightness/ Contrast (Brightness / Contrast), switch the layer blending mode to Luminosity (Brightness) and set Contrast (Contrast) at 30.

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves), switch the blend mode to Luminosity (Brightness) and set the opacity to 35%, then give the curve an S-shape to increase the contrast.

Step 5

Add a fill layer Solid Color (Color) and choose black for it. Change the blending mode to Soft Light (Soft light) and reduce the opacity to 43%.

Step 6

On the layer panel, click on the thumbnail of the fill layer mask; Brush Tool (B) (Brush), set the foreground color to black and use a large soft brush to draw the text to create a quick vignette effect.

Also on the property bar, you can reduce the parameter Density (Density) to get a softer result.

Step 7

Add an adjustment layer Color Lookup (Color search) and on the property bar install 3DLUT File (3DLUT file) at 2Strip.look.

Then we switch the blending mode to Soft Light (Soft light) and reduce the opacity to 30%.

Step 8

Add another adjustment layer Color Lookup (Color search) and install Abstract (Abstract) on Gold-Blue.

Switch the blend mode to Lighten (Replace with light) and reduce the opacity to 50%.

Step 9

Using tool Crop Tool (C) (Crop) cut off the excess. If necessary, you can disable the option Delete Cropped Pixels (Delete pixel data outside the frame) on the top options bar.

Congratulations, we are done!

At the beginning of the lesson, using various shapes and text layers, we created coins.

Then they were transformed into 3D layers, customized and added materials. After that they duplicated the coins and distributed them so as to create the outlines of the word.

In the end, we set up the lighting, rendered the scene and added some adjustment layers to get the final result.
