Create bright brilliant 3D text in Photoshop

In this special tutorial, which is dedicated to the tenth anniversary of Envato Tuts +, I’ll show you how to create a bright, brilliant text effect using 3D Photoshop tools, brushes and adjustment layers.

I was inspired to create this effect by the numerous layer styles available on GraphicRiver.

Note: The author used paid materials. In the archive you will find an alternative font for the lesson.

1. Create a background

Step 1

Create a new document of 1000 x 1000 pixels with a white background. Paste the gradient background from additional materials above the background layer and, if necessary, adjust its size (Ctrl + T).

Step 2

Move on Image – Adjustments – Hue/ Saturation (Image – Correction – Hue / Saturation), set Hue (Color tone) at 35 and Saturation (Saturation) – at -80.

Step 3

Decrease Opacity (opacity) layer up to 50%.

2. Customize the brush for confetti

Step 1

Writing text using the Sofia Pro Black font. On the panel Window – Character (Window – Symbol) install Tracking (Tracking) at 75. Size is large enough to make it easier for us to work with text.

Step 2

Name the text layer “Text”, right-click on it and select Convert to Shape (Convert to curves).

Step 3

Activate Line Tool (U) (Line), on the top panel of parameters we set the mode Shape (Figure) and Weight (Thickness) – 1 pixel.

Hold the Alt key and draw the lines crossing the text to cut it into pieces.

Step 4

The lines must be at different angles and not intersect with each other.

Step 5

When finished, click the button on the top parameter panel. Path Operations (Contour operations) and select Merge Shape Components (Combine the components of the figure).

3. Create 3D layers

Step 1

Create a new layer, fill it with white color and call it “Sphere”.

Step 2

Take Brush Tool (B) (Brush) and open the panel Window – Brush (Window – Brush). Choose a brush Hard Square 20 (Hard square 20 pixels.). Customize the brush as shown below:

Step 3

Set the foreground color to black, create a new layer and call it “Confetti”. Use a customized brush to draw through the document to draw confetti.

Make sure that none of the confetti elements overlap the other. You may not fill the entire document, as we later transform confetti into 3D objects and will be able to duplicate them to fill in the empty areas.

4. Create 3D layers

Step 1

Select the “Confetti” layer and turn 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer (3D – New 3D extrusion from selected layer). Then select the layer “Sphere” and go 3D – New Mesh from Layer – Mesh Preset – Sphere (3D – New mesh from layer – Grid set – Sphere). After that we apply to the “Text” layer 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Path (3D – New 3D extrusion from the selected contour).

Step 2

On the layers panel, select all the 3D layers and merge them together. 3D – Merge 3D Layers (3D – Merge 3D layers).

5. How to work with a 3D scene

Step 1

To have access to the parameters of 3D objects, we need to open two panels: the 3D panel and Properties (Properties) (both are in the main menu Window (Window)).

The 3D panel contains a list of all the components of the scene and, if you select one of them, we can edit its parameters in the panel. Properties (Properties). Therefore, always pay attention to whether the desired object is selected before editing it.

Step 2

If activate Move Tool (V) (Move), a set of special 3D modes will appear at the top of the options bar. By selecting one of them, we can make certain manipulations with the object of the scene (movement, rotation, scaling, etc.).

They can also be used to change the current view from the camera.

6. Configure the parameters of 3D-objects

Step 1

On the 3D panel, select the component “Text”, then go to the panel Properties (Properties) and install Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) by 100.

Step 2

On the property bar, go to the tab Cap (Capital) and install Bevel Width (Chamfer width) by 5, Contour (Contour) – on Half Round (Semicircle), Inflate – Strength (Bloating – Intensity) – by 25.

Step 3

Select the component “Confetti” and install Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) by 1.

7. Scale 3D objects

Step 1

Take Move Tool (V) (Move) and use 3D axes to separate the strokes from each other.

The arrows at the ends of the axes move objects, a small arc that goes further is responsible for turning, and with the help of a cube you can scale the object. The central cube from which the axes extend is needed for uniform scaling of the object. To perform an action with the axes, simply click on them and drag the mouse.

Step 2

You can also enter numeric values ​​in the tab Coordinates (Coordinates), which is on the property bar.

Push the button Scale (Scale) and select Uniform Scaling (Uniform scaling) to activate proportional scaling.

Step 3

You can return to the scope settings and change its scale at any time. Now we reduce it, pick up the size at its discretion.

8. Moving 3D objects

Step 1

Hide the sphere by clicking on the eye icon next to the component on the 3D panel.

Step 2

Select the component “Confetti”, go to the tab Coordinates (Coordinates) and install X Rotation Angle (Angle of rotation on the X axis) at 90.

Step 3

In the upper right corner of the 3D panel, click on the menu button and select Move Object to Ground Plane (Move the object to the base plane).

9. Create 3D materials

Step 1

Select all the materials of the “Text” component, click on the button opposite the property bar Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Remove Texture (Remove texture).

Step 2

Set the following values ​​for the selected materials (color values ​​are in RGB format):

  • Diffuse (Scattering): 122, 95, 22
  • Specular (Color of the flare): 224, 219, 208
  • Shine (Brilliance): 80%
  • Reflection (Reflection): 20%

Step 3

Expand the Sphere component and select its material. Remove texture Diffuse (Scattering) and customize:

  • Diffuse (Scattering): 72, 35, 140
  • Specular (Color of the flare): 191, 189, 185
  • Shine (Gloss): 70%
  • Reflection (Reflection): 10%

Step 4

Select the materials of the component “Confetti”, delete the texture Diffuse (Scattering) and customize:

  • Diffuse (Scattering): 128, 128, 128
  • Specular (Color of the flare): 235, 229, 229
  • Shine (Gloss): 70%
  • Reflection (Reflection): 10%

10. Split a 3D object into parts and save the view from the camera.

Step 1

Select the component “Text” and go 3D – Split 3D Meshes (3D – Split 3D extrusion). As a result, parts of the text will become separate 3D objects.

For the convenience of working with text, you can hide the Sphere and Confetti objects.

Step 2

Next, we have to choose some parts of the text and slightly rotate each at different angles. It’s okay if they overlap each other, this is also part of the effect.

Step 3

We select the appropriate view from the camera and make sure that the component Current View (Current view) is selected.

Then on the property bar in the menu View (View) choose Save (Save), write the name of the species and click OK.

As a result, in the 3D panel and in the menu View (View) will add our new camera view. Having finished working with the composition, we will be able to set the desired view from the camera with one click and render the finished scene.

11. Create instances of 3D objects.

Step 1

Click the right mouse button on the sphere component and select Instance Objects (Create Object Instances).

The result is a copy of the object associated with the original. Any changes we apply to the original will automatically be displayed on the copy.

Step 2

Create as many instances of the sphere as needed, and place them around the scene.

In order not to be confused with a large number of components on the 3D panel, select all copies of the sphere and click on them with the right mouse button, in the menu that opens, select Group Objects (Group objects).

Step 3

Repeat the same with the object “Confetti” and cover them with the entire horizontal plane of the scene. To get a more dynamic result, any instance can be moved, rotated and scaled.

12. Adjust the stage lighting

Step 1

Choose a component Infinite Light one (Infinite Light), on the property bar set Intensity (Intensity) by 50% and Shadow – softness (Shadow – Smoothing) – by 30%.

Step 2

Via Move Tool (V) (Moving) or coordinate panel adjust the position of the light source.

Step 3

Choose a component Environment (Wednesday), on the property bar, click on the texture icon IBL (ISBI), choose Replace Texture (Replace texture) and choose a picture with a sofa.

Step 4

Install Intensity (Intensity) by 80% and move the picture until we get the most successful option.

If necessary, you can return to the parameters of light and environment to adjust their settings and position.

13. Add a depth of field and render the 3D scene.

Step 1

Choose a component Scene (Scene) and on the property bar in the menu Presets (Sets) choose Hidden Wireframe (Hidden frame).

Step 2

Then choose Current View (Current view) and install Depth Of Field (Depth of field) by 3. Play with the settings Distance (Offset) until you get the appropriate option.

Step 3

Select component again Scene (Scene) and set Presets (Sets) on Default (Default).

Step 4

Finish, go 3D – Render 3D Layer (3D – Rendering the 3D layer). Rendering will take some time, but you can stop it at any time by pressing the Esc key.

When everything is ready, right-click on the 3D layer and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object), so as not to accidentally spoil this layer.

14. Apply general correction.

Step 1

Add a correction layer above the 3D layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – brightness/ Contrast (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness / Contrast). Click on it with the right mouse button and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask), then set Contrast (Contrast) at 15.

Step 2

Take Brush Tool (B) (Brush), select the Hard Square 20 brush and customize it:

Step 3

Above all the previous layers, add a new one, call it “Confetti” and draw some confetti around the label.

Step 4

Double click on the “Confetti” layer to apply the following layer styles:

Add Bevel Emboss (Embossed):

  • Size (Size): 16
  • Gloss Contour (Gloss contour): Rolling Slope – Descending (Wavy slope)
  • Put a tick in front Anti-aliased (Smoothing)
  • Highlight mode (Backlight mode): Vivid light (Bright light)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 70%
  • Shadow mode (Shadow mode):
  • Opacity (Opacity): 0%

Then add Gradient Overlay (Gradient overlay):

  • Style (Style): Reflected (Mirror)
  • Angle (Angle): 29
  • Choosing a Gold Gradient Pipes X3

Step 5

Now with the help Eraser Tool (E) (Eraser) we can get rid of the extra confetti.

15. Add a Curves Adjustment Layer.

Step 1

Above all previous layers add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and in the settings window we raise the central part of the curve slightly higher.

Step 2

Selecting the mask of the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and turn Image – Apply Image (Image – External channel).

Install Source – Layer (Source – Layer) on Merged (United) and Channel (Channel) – on Blue (Blue), then Target – Blending (Target – Overlay) – on Linear Blur (Line dimmer) and click OK.

Step 3

Change layer blending mode Curves (Curves) on Luminosity (Brightness).

Step 4

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) layer Curves (Curves) and the central part of the curve is omitted just below.

Step 5

Above all previous layers, create a new one, call it “Color Contrast” and press Shift + Alt + Ctrl + E to merge all visible layers on it.

We convert this layer into a smart object and switch the blending mode to Soft Light (Soft light).

Step 6

Move on Filter – Other – High Pass (Filter – Other – Color Contrast), set Radius (Radius) on 1 and click OK.

Congratulations, we are done!

At the beginning of the lesson, we created a simple background, the text, divided into parts, and set up a brush to create confetti.

Then they transformed all the layers into 3D-objects, set up their parameters and added materials.

After that, we adjusted the lighting and rendered the finished scene. In the end, we added a confetti effect and several adjustment layers.
