In this tutorial, you will learn how to create bright glowing text using 3D Photoshop tools. Let’s start!
I was inspired to create this effect by the various layer styles available on GraphicRiver.
1. Create 3D text
Create a new document with a size of 1300 x 1300 pixels.
Then we write the text in capital letters using the Primal font. Size (Size) set to 90 pt, Tracking (Tracking) – by 30.
Move on 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer (3D – New 3D extrusion from selected layer).
To have access to the parameters of 3D objects, we need to open two panels: the 3D panel and Properties (Properties) (both are in the main menu Window (Window)).
The 3D panel contains a list of all the components of the scene and, if you select one of them, we can edit its parameters in the panel. Properties (Properties). Therefore, always pay attention to whether the desired object is selected before editing it.
If activate Move Tool (V) (Move), a set of special 3D modes will appear at the top of the options bar.
If you select one of them, then with the selected object of the scene you can make certain manipulations (move, rotate, scale, etc.).
We will also use these modes to change the current view from the camera.
2. Set up 3D objects and a capital
On the 3D panel, select the component with the text and install Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) at 15 px.
Next on the panel Properties (Properties) click on the button Cap (Capital) and install Bevel Width (Chamfer width) by 1.
3. Configure 3D materials
Select all materials except Extrusion Material (Extrusion material), and customize them (color values are in RGB format):
- Diffuse (Scattering): 211, 211, 211
- Specular (Highlight color): 180, 180, 180
- Shine (Brilliance): 80%
Select Extrusion Material (Material extrusion) and customize it:
- Diffuse (Scattering): 121, 222, 209
- Specular (Highlight color): 20, 41, 42
- Shine (Brilliance): 80%
Click on the folder icon next to the parameter Illumination (Glow) and choose New Texture (New texture).
In the window that opens, install Width (Width) by 1300 pixels, Height (Height) – 300 pixels and click OK.
As a result, a new file with the specified parameters will open. If this does not happen, go back to the parameter Illumination (Glow), click on the folder icon and select Edit Texture (Edit texture).
4. Create a bright glow texture.
We work in the new file. Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the background layer.
Double click on the copy to apply the layer style. Gradient Overlay (Gradient overlay) with the following parameters:
- Put a tick in front Dither (Dithering)
- Angle (Angle): 0
- In the list of gradients choose a multicolor gradient or you can create your own.
At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the button. Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) and select Levels (Levels).
For the adjustment layer, set the blend mode to Luminosity (Brightness) and Gamma (Gamma) – 0.75.
Save (Ctrl + S) and close the document.
As a result, we got a multicolor bright glow material.
5. Add a background
Take Rectangle Tool (U) (Rectangle) and click anywhere on the working canvas to bring up a window Create Rectangle (Create a rectangle).
Install Width (Width) by 1560 pixels, Height (Height) – 1750 pixels and click OK. Make sure the color of the rectangle is set to white.
Creating a rectangle, apply to it. 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Path (3D – New 3D extrusion from the selected circuit) and install Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) by 1.
On the 3D panel, select the component Current View (Current view), then on the property bar on the menu View (View) find the name of our 3D text (in this case it is colorful).
Select both 3D layers and turn 3D – Merge 3D Layers (3D – Merge 3D layers).
Take Move Tool (V) (Move), select the created rectangle and place it right behind the text using 3D axes.
The arrows at the ends of the axes move objects, a small arc that goes further is responsible for turning, and with the help of a cube you can scale the object. The central cube from which the axes extend is needed for uniform scaling of the object. To perform an action with the axes, simply click on them and drag the mouse.
Select Front Inflation Material (The material of the front bulge) component Rectangle one (Rectangle 1). Set color Specular (Color highlight) at 51, 51, 51 and Shine (Glitter) – 90%.
6. Adjust the lighting
Choose a component Infinite Light one (Infinite Light 1), set Intensity (Intensity) and Shadow – softness (Shadow – Smoothing) by 30%.
Via Move Tool (V) (Move) place the light source opposite the text and tilt it slightly forward.
You can perform the same manipulations on the properties panel in the tab Coordinates (Coordinates) using numeric values.
Next, select the component Environment (Environment), click on the parameter texture icon IBL (Isbi) and choose Replace Texture (Replace texture) to open an image with a white room, which we downloaded at the beginning of the lesson.
Click the texture icon again. IBL (Isbi) and choose Edit Texture (Edit texture).
Add an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Install Saturation (Saturation) at -60, Lightness (Brightness) – by 15.
Save the document (Ctrl + S) and close it.
Install Intensity (Intensity) by 65% and Ground Plane – Shadows – Opacity (Baseline – Shadows – Opacity) – to 0.
With help Move Tool (V) (Move) move the texture until we get the desired result.
Activate Move Tool (V) (Move) and use 3D modes to customize the view from the camera. Make sure that the edges of the rectangle that is behind the text are not visible.
Move on 3D – Render 3D Layer (3D – Render the 3D layer). Rendering can take a lot of time, but you can stop it at any time by pressing the Esc key.
You can also stop rendering to modify the lighting, camera view, or any other settings, and then start rendering the final image again.

We started with creating 3D text, set up materials, and filled the glow texture with a multi-colored gradient to create a bright glowing effect.
Then we set up the stage lighting, as well as the view from the camera, and then visualized the final version.
