Create sleek 3D metal text in Photoshop

?The 3D Photoshop CS6 environment with various options and settings makes it easy to create amazing 3D text effects. This tutorial will show you how to create a simple but sophisticated metallic text effect using various 3D settings.

In the lesson used:

  1. Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended
  2. Sail Font
  3. Metal texture from WebTreatsETC.

Step 1

Create a new document 1000×1000 pixels. Set foreground color to # 444343 and background color # 1c1c1c.
Choose a tool Gradient tool (G) (Gradient), in the set, select a gradient consisting of foreground and background colors, gradient type Radial gradient (Radial).

Then click and drag from the center of the document to one of the corners.

Install the font in Photoshop and write the text (color #ccccc, size 330 pt).

Go to the menu 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer (3D – New 3D Extrusion from selected layer). The text layer is converted to a 3D layer. 3D text grid is already available for editing. This is what we will do now.

Step 2

To access the settings and properties of the 3D grid, you need to open two panels. 3D panel and panel Properties (Properties). Menu Window (Window).

The 3D panel has all the components of the 3D scene, and when you click on the name of any of them, you can access its settings in the panel. Properties (Properties). Therefore, be sure to select the name of the item in the 3D panel that you want to change, before you change its settings in the panel Properties (Properties).

Select Move Tool (V) (Move). A set appears on the top panel. 3D Modes (3D Mode). By selecting one of them, you can perform any actions with the element selected in the 3D panel.

Step 3

Select the grid name (your text) in the 3D panel. Then in the properties panel, change Texture mapping (Texture Display) on Tile (Mosaic) and Extrusion depth (Extrusion depth) up to 500.

Click on the icon Cap (Capital) in the properties panel. In settings Bevel (Chamfer) change Width (Width) by 10, select Сontour (Circuit) Half round (Semicircle), Angle (Angle) 90, Strength (Intensity) 2. This will add a small amount.

Select Coordinates (Coordinates) and install X Rotation Angle (angle of rotation on the X axis) by 90. This will rotate the text perpendicular to the plane of the base.

Next, we go to 3D Snap Object to Ground Plane (3D – Snap an object to the base plane)

On the 3D panel, select Current view (Current view) select tool Move Tool (V) (Move) and using various tools in 3D Modes (3D modes), change the current camera view so that it points to the text above.

You can also use 3D axes to rotate and move. The arrow at the ends of the axes is for moving, the curved rectangle is for rotating, the cubes are used for scaling. The white cube in the center is used for uniform scaling of the object (all axes at once). All you need is to click on the desired item and make a change.

Step 4

If you want to change the text, select the grid name (your text) in the 3D panel and click the button Edit source (Edit Source) on the properties panel.

This will open the document with the text and you can make any changes to your text. I will change the font size to 392.5 pt. But when changing the text or its size, the text may extend beyond the document.

To fix this, after the changes we go to Image – Reveal All (Image – Show All)

When you’re done, save the document. File – Save (File – Save) and close it to return to the original.

Step 5

To add additional perspective to the text, select the text grid in the 3D panel, on the property panel, select Deform (Warp) and change the value Taper (Taper) up to 80%.

In the 3D panel, select with Ctrl Front Inflation Material (Material of the front bulge) and Back Inflation Material (Material back convexity), then on the properties panel, change the settings as shown below:

Diffuse(Scattering) – # 391d5b
Specular (Color of the flare) – # bbb08c
Illumination (Glow) – # 080808
Ambient (Lighting) – # 000000

Select Front bevel material (Material of the front bevel) and Back Bevel Material (Material of the rear bevel) and change the settings:

Diffuse (Scattering) – # 391d5b
Specular (Color of the flare) – # c1c1c1
Illumination (Glow) – # 080808
Ambient (Lighting) – # 000000

Finally, select Extrusion material (Material extrusion) and change the settings.

Diffuse (Scattering) – # 1b003d
Specular (Color of the flare) – # c1c1c1
Illumination (Glow) – # 080808
Ambient (Lighting) – # 000000

Step 6

Select tab Environment (Environment) on the 3D panel, then on the property panel, click on the folder icon IBL (Isbi) and select Load texture (Load texture)

Upload texture image ghghghhj.jpg, which is given in the materials for the lesson. Then change Intensity (Intensity) by 50%, Shadows (Shadows) – Opacity (Opacity) 60%, Reflection (Reflection) – Opacity (Opacity) 20% and Roughness (Roughness) up to 2%.

You can change the location of the texture. Select Move Tool (V) (Move), click on the sphere of the medium and drag it to your discretion.

Step 7

Select Infinite Light 1 (Infinite light 1), on the properties panel, change Intensity (Intensity) by 90% and Shadow softness (Shadow Smoothing) up to 60%

You can move the lighting as you like, or use the coordinate values.

Press the button Add new Light to Scene (Add a new light to the scene) at the bottom of the 3d panel and select New infinite light (New infinite light).

In the properties panel, change Intensity (Intensity) to 40% and uncheck Shadow (Shadow)

Set the lighting at your discretion or use the coordinate values.

Step 8

You can also make any changes to the scene settings until you like the result.

When you’re done, go to 3d render (3D – Rendering). This may take some time, but you can stop rendering at any time by clicking anywhere on the document.

After rendering is complete, click on the button. Create new fill or adjustmentlayer (Create a new adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Gradient map (Gradient Map).

Create a gradient using colors. # 3e5678 and # ff9a9e. Change the blending mode of the layer to Overlay (Overlap) and Opacity (Opacity) up to 15%.

And we did it!
