Create summer 3D text in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to create airy, summer text with a 3D effect. During the lesson, you will learn how to use the 3D functions in Photoshop to create the basic shape of the text, then combine it with various images to achieve the desired result. So, let’s begin!

Lesson details:

Software Used: Adobe Photoshop CS6

Difficulty: Medium

Elapsed time: 3 hours

The final result.

Materials for the lesson:

Before starting the lesson, download the suggested materials or use alternative sources of your choice.

Materials for the lesson:

Rbno 2.1 Font
Beach
Paradise at my Fingtertips
Cuba, cayo largo (1)
Cuba, cayo largo (2)
Mangsnag beach in KOREA
Sunset
Coconut palm against blue sky
Seagull
Beach ball
Umbrella
Water new
Green Flip Flops on Beach

Some of the proposed materials are not free and can be purchased from Photodune, but you don’t have to buy them; you can always use alternative sources. But, if you want to achieve a better result, you must use professional photos, especially since we will work in high resolution.

Before opening Photoshop, we need to find a beautiful font for 3D text. The author uses the font RBNo 2.1 Black DEMO, which you can download on MyFonts for free. Just click the “Add to Cart” button, complete the process, and you will be given a link to download the font. However, feel free to use any other font you like. The author believes that sans serif fonts are more suitable for 3D text.

Once the font is installed, open Photoshop and create a new document (Ctrl + N). So how are we going to work further with a document with dimensions of 1920? 1080p, our 3D text will be twice as large for maximum quality. Customize your document with a size of 3840 for 2160 pixels and click OK.

Choose a tool Text(Type Tool) and write the word “SUMMER” in the center of the document. Open the palette Symbol (Character) and make the following settings.

With the text layer selected, go to the menu 3D – New 3D extrusion from selected layer (3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer). You will get the following result.

If you’ve never used 3D in Photoshop, you’ll find it a bit confusing. In order to use these functions, you need to open two panels – the panel 3D and panel Properties (Properties). In the 3D panel, you can select various settings of the object with which you want to work (environment, figure, light, etc.), and on the panel Properties (Properties) you have the ability to edit the values of the settings.

And so, open these two panels. In the panel 3D select your text and give it the following settings in the panel Properties (Properties) as shown in the screenshots below. In the editor Contour (Contour) ensure that the option is checked at all points in the contour. Angle (Corner), otherwise you will not get the desired result.

Now enter the following settings for The environment (Environment), Scenes (Scene) and options Current view (Current View). In order for the text to look with the prospect do not forget to set up Current view (Current View) in option Field of vision … (FOV) set the value to 10 mm.

Environment (Environment)
Coordinates (Coordinates)
Scene (Scene)
Current view (Current View)

Finally let’s apply text to the text. Use the settings below to apply parameters and change the color of materials that will be useful to us for highlighting in the next steps.

After the 3D text is ready, you need to render to render the final result (this can take some time), and then the text is rasterized. Since we worked with the document size twice as large as the size of our final document, it is not necessary to render the rendering to the best quality. Now go to the menu 3D – Rendering (3D – Render).

In this step, we will prepare our text for working with images. For this we need three versions of the text.

The first is quite easy to get. Select the rasterized text layer and go to the menu Selection – Color Range (Select> Color Range). Choose a blue color and then create a clipping mask in the menu. Layers – Create Clipping Mask (Layer> Create Clipping Mask). Name this layer “Blue”.

Translator’s Note: Apparently the author was mistaken with the choice of the mask as clipping. My option for this action is Layers – Layer Mask – Show selected area, after which the necessary part of the text and mask will be separated as in the screenshot.

Go ahead. Duplicate the labeled layer and invert the mask. Ctrl + I. Take the tool Brush(Brush) black and paint over the green areas on the label. Now load the selection of the “Blue” layer by holding the Ctrl key and clicking on its mask. Finally, fill the selection with white on the mask. Name this layer “Red + Blue”.

Duplicate the “Blue” layer and hide its mask (Shift + click on the mask). Now go to the menu Selection – Color Range (Select> Color Range) and create a selection of red. Make the mask visible again and fill the selection with white. Deselect Ctrl + D and invert the mask. Name this layer “Green”.

We have to do a little more work on the text. Create a new layer with a clipping mask above the “Green” layer and using the tool Stamp(Clone Stamp Tool), clear the remnants of blue on the green.

Now that our 3D text is ready, we need to create a beautiful beach. To begin, create a new document 3840×2160 pixels just like last time.

Open the image with the beach, drag into your document and apply distortion in the menu. Editing – Transform – Distort (Edit> Transform> Distort).

Duplicate the beach layer, flip it horizontally in the menu Editing – Transform – Flip Horizontally (Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontal) and position it on the right side. Add a copy layer mask and hide with a black brush on the beach area to create a single image.

Now place the Paradise at my Fingtertips image in your document, reduce it to about 60% and drag horizontally to about 200%. Using the layer mask, use a soft brush to hide the excess area marked in red in the screenshot to merge the bottom with the background. Add two adjustment layers Color balance (Color Balance) and Curves (Curves). Additionally, the author has created a new layer with clipping mask in the mode Multiplication (Multiply) and darkened the edges on the left and right with a soft blue tassel. Once finished, group the created layers into a group. Ctrl + G and give it the name “Sea”.

Open two images Cuba, cayo largo 1 and Cuba, cayo largo 2 and place them so that their horizon matches your background. Use the same technique as we did in the previous step to gently merge the layers together. Then group them and hide the lower part of the layer under the mask as shown in the screenshot. Name the group “Sky”.

Add two adjustment layers to the created group. Color balance (Color Balance) and Curves (Curves) to brighten the sky and give the image a view of the Caribbean.

Hide both groups and open the image. Mangsnag beach in Korea. Place it in your document on the left, duplicate and flip horizontally. On a new layer using the tool Stamp (Clone Stamp Tool) clean the sand. Do not forget to set the parameter in the top stamp settings menu Active and lower (Current Below).

Add a new adjustment layer at the top. Gradient map (Gradient Map) and set the following gradient. Group the layers that you were working with now and give the name to the “Sand” group.

Make all groups visible. Add a mask to the “Sea” group and hide a part of the foam on the sand, as well as add a layer style to the group to improve the contrast Shadow (Drop Shadow). Settings below.

Add adjustment layers to the “Sea” group. It will be Color balance (Color Balance) and Curves (Curves).

Let’s add the sun in the sky. With a soft brush on the new layer, draw three spots superimposed on each other, starting with a large blue, then medium blue, and finally a small white. Set the blending mode to this layer. Screen (Screen).

Repeat the same steps, but this time make the spots bigger and outside the “Sky” group. Now group these layers and name the group “Light”.

To make the sun more beautiful, we will add its bright reflection in the sea. Download the Sunset image, separate the reflection in the water, discolor it Ctrl + Shift + U and darken with Curves (Curves). Now transform the layer by compressing it and set it to blending mode. Screen (Screen).

Now that we have 3D text and a background with the beach, we need to combine them. Create again a new document, but this time its dimensions will be 1920? 1080 pixels and name it “Hello Summer”. Go back to the document with the beach and convert all the layers into one Smart object (Smart Object). To do this, select all the layers and groups, right-click and select Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object)). Now duplicate this smart menu Layers – Create a duplicate layer (Layrs – Duplicate layers) and select the “Hello Summer” document. Layers with 3D text also duplicate in the “Hello Summer” document.

Using Free transformation (Free Transform Ctrl + T), reduce everything up to 50%.

Now place a smart “Beach” object in the layers palette with a clipping mask over the “Red + Blue” layer. Since the beach layer is a smart object, if necessary, it can always be edited.

Set the “Blue” layer Fill (Fill) at 15% and set the following layer styles to it. Settings below. Duplicate the “Beach” layer and make it as a clipping mask to the “Blue” layer.

Merge the “Green” layer together with its auxiliary stamped layer. Discolor it Ctrl + Shift + U and change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply). Duplicate the “Beach” layer once again and place it below the “Green” layer in the layers palette. Then load the selection of the “Green” layer and add a copy mask with the beach.

Now add two adjustment layers with clipping masks for the “Green” correction. It will be Curves (Curves) and Colour (Solid Color).

Also for a copy of the beach, add a correction layer with clipping. Curves (Curves). On the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) add a blur with a radius of 25 pixels.

Now darken the protruding edges of the text. Duplicate the “Green” layer and place it above all layers. Change his blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply) and erase areas with external extrusion. On the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) add a blur with a radius of 5 pixels and attach to the “Green” layer also a layer with a beach with a clipping mask.

Now our 3D text is ready. Duplicate the “Beach” layer once again and rasterize it in the menu. Layers – Rasterize – Smart Object (Layer> Rasterize> Smart Object). On the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) add a blur with a radius of 50 pixels. Add adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), group all the text layers together and name the group “Summer”. Do the same with the background layers and name the group “BG.”

Add a shadow to our text to make it look like it’s in the sand. Duplicate the “Summer” group and merge it. Click the icon at the top of the layers palette. Keeps pixels transparent (Lock Transparent Pixels) and fill the layer with # 8A725F in the menu Editing – Run Fill (Edit> Fill). Move the layer down.

Unlock the transparency of the pixels and the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) add a blur with a radius of 15 pixels. Transform a layer, squeezing it vertically, erase the top part and place it under the “Summer” group in the layers palette.

Repeat the procedure again, but set the blur radius to 3 pixels. Group both layers and name the group “Shadow”.

In the next steps, we will start adding different images to our composition in order to make it more interesting. Let’s start with palm trees. To separate it from the background, use the tool. Magic wand(Magic Wand Tool) and click on the background. Do not pay attention to the clouds and islands, we will fix it. Add a layer mask and use the black brush to remove the extra areas as shown below.

Leave the layer mask active and open the panel Properties (Properties). Click the button Edge mask (Mask Edge) and paint the sky around the leaves. Set the value radius (Radius) 0.6 pixels value Smooth out (Smooth) 1 and turn on the option Clear colors (Decontaminate Colors).

Now convert the palm tree layer to Smart object (Smart Object), duplicate it in your main document and reduce to 64? 44%. Rename the layer to “Palm Tree” and hide the right lower palm area under the mask. When a layer is transformed into a smart object, you can transform it as many times as you like without losing quality.

Since the main source of light in our composition comes from the sun in the center of the text, we will make the inner shadow of our palm. To do this, create a correction layer. Curves (Curves) with clipping mask to the palm. Invert the mask of the adjustment layer and process the right side of the tree on it. Apply filter Smart Sharpen (Smart Sharpen) and place the layer in the group with the same name. You can also reduce the effect of the filter on the mask so that the leaves are not too sharp.

Add a beach ball to our composition. It must be separated from the background and can be done using the tool. Ellipse (Ellipse Too), which will create a mask. Now convert the ball layer to Smart object (Smart Object), move to your document and flip horizontally. Apply layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow) and, if you wish, add a shadow, as you did earlier for the text in the sand.

Download an image with an umbrella, open it in Photoshop. Separate it from the background by removing the handle extending beyond the umbrella. Convert the umbrella layer to Smart object (Smart Object) and move to your document. Tool Brush (Brush) with a slight stiffness, with the SHIFT key held down, draw a straight pole to the sand in gray. Apply a layer style to the pole. Stamping (Bevel Emboss).

Upload an image with a seagull, do the same with it as before. Work with the light, which should be more on top and shadows. It should not be perfect, since the gull will be sufficiently reduced in size for the main document.

Now add the text that says “Hello”. The author uses the Shelby font, which you can buy here. You can also use any font of your choice. Add a layer style to the text. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

In this step, we will add spilled water to the sand. To do this, use the spray shape, which you can download on the Internet. Place the shape in your document, transform it into the menu. Editing – Transforming – Perspective (Edit> Transform> Perspective). Put the Fill (Fill) layer at 0% and apply layer styles.

Stamping (Bevel Emboss)

Color overlay (Color Overlay)

Download the Water new image and place it in perspective above the spray layer. Load the splashes and, while standing on a layer of water, add a mask, so you cut off the extra water. Now discolor the water Ctrl + Shift + U and darken with curve correction. Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) 20%.

Repeat the process, adding another small spray. The author placed these layers in a group and, for ease, added layer styles directly to it.

To better inscribe our letters and make them more interesting, add some spilled sand to the surface. Download the image of the sand, for convenience it is better to immediately in PNG format and set the following settings to it – style Stamping (Bevel Emboss) and two adjustment layers Color balance (Color Balance) and Curves (Curves).

Draw some grains of sand on the surface. To do this, select a small hard brush, open the brush settings panel (F5) and set the settings using the screenshots below. Tool Pipette(Eyedropper Tool) select the color of the sand for drawing sand. Draw them on a new layer and apply a layer style for contrast. Shadow (Drop Shadow).

Repeat this process as much as you see fit.

Using the same technique, add slippers next to the letter U and name the group “Sandals”.

At the moment we already have such a job.

It looks good enough, but we can still improve the work. In this step, we will add several adjustment layers to help combine the different elements in the composition. Add the following adjustment layers as in the screenshots below. For correction Gradient map (Gradient Map) change the blending mode to Overlap (Overlay) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 50%. Do not forget to mask the adjustment layer Color balance (Color Balance) with a soft black tassel to remove the effect of the correction so that the leaves of the palm tree remain green. Now group all the layers and name the group “Adjustments”.

Photo filter (Photo filter)

Color balance (Color Balance)

Curves (Curves).

Gradient map (Gradient Map)

Another great way to improve your final image is to add a soft vignette effect around the edges. To do this, create a new layer and fill it with black. Choose a tool Rectangle selection (Rectangular Marquee Tool), select the center of the document and delete this area. On the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) add a blur with a radius of 40 pixels and change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (Multiply). To improve the picture, the author created two layers above the vignette and painted it with colors selected from the inscription.

Translator’s Note: The author does not indicate the details of the settings for the layers with the selected color. You can use for them the blending mode Color (Color) and opacity 40-50%.

At this stage, the author decided to reduce the sea a little. Therefore, I selected all the “Beach” layers and scaled them in height to 65%. If you also want to repeat this, do not forget to detach the layer from the mask by clicking on the corresponding icon between the thumbnails, then the transformation will not affect the mask.

We are almost done. The author proposes to add some noise to the work for unity in the composition. To do this, create a new layer and fill it with 50% gray in the menu Editing – Run Fill (Edit> Fill). Now go to the Filter menu – Noise – Add noise (Filter> Noise> Add Noise). Set the value Effect (Amount) by 2%. Name the layer “Noise” and change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft Light).

Finally, add a little bit of sharpness to the image. Select all your layers, right-click and select Merge layers (Merge Layers), hold down the Alt key, then you will get the merged layer at the very top. Now go to the menu Filter – Sharpness – Smart Sharpen (Filter> Sharpen> Smart Sharpen), enter the required values and click OK. Remember to save work. If you want, you can reduce the picture to 50% to get rid of all the flaws.

Your layer palette should look like this.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have completed this job. In the process, you learned how to create 3D text in Photoshop, how to combine 3D text with photos in order to create a summer illustration that you can use for a wide range of tasks.
