Marble and rose gold are a popular minimalist trend in design that is found literally everywhere – from home interior to stationery, dishes, etc. In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a text effect of marble and rose gold using simple shapes and 3D tools. Let’s start!
I was inspired to create this effect by the numerous layer styles available on GraphicRiver.
Note: The author used paid materials. In the archive you will find an alternative version of the images to perform the lesson.
1. Create a background and add text.
Create a new document with a size of 1000 x 750 pixels.
At the bottom of the layers panel, press the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) and select Solid Color (Colour). Set the color to # e8e4e1.
We write the text using the Kaiju font, the size is set to 250 pt.
Right click on the text layer and select Convert to Shape (Convert to curves).
2. Create shapes to subtract.
Rename the text layer to “Marble”, duplicate it (Ctrl + J) and name it “Rose Gold” copy.
Take Pen Tool(P) (Pen), set the foreground color to red and switch the drawing mode to the top panel Shape (Figure).
Then we draw a shape covering a part of the text, which will be with the effect of pink gold.
To add a new shape to an existing layer, hold down the Alt key while working with the pen.
Duplicate the layer with the red figures, place the original over the “Marble” layer, and the copy – above the “Rose Gold” layer.
Next, hide the “Marble” layer and the original layer with the red shapes above by clicking on the eye icon on the layers panel.
3. Move the nodal points
Select the copy of the red figure and take Direct Selection Tool (A) (Partial selection).
Now we have to make the red pieces cover only the opposite part of the text.
To do this, we hold down the Shift key and select the reference points on the outer border of the shape, which are not located on the axis, relative to which we will mirror the object.
Grab the selected control points with the mouse and move them to another part of the text.
To correct the details, we can separately move each reference point.
Repeat the process for all letters.
4. Cutting figures
Turn on the visibility of all layer shapes and select the Rose Gold layers and the red shapes above.
Move on Layer – Combine Shapes – Subtract Front Shape (Layer – Merge shapes – Subtract the front shape) and call the resulting layer “Rose Gold”.
Take Direct Selection Tool (A) (Partial selection), click on the button on the top panel Path operations (Contour operations) and select Merge Shape Components (Combine the components of the figure).
Repeat the action for the “Marble” layer and its red shapes.
5. Create 3D layers
Apply to each layer with figures 3D – New 3D Extrusion from Selected Path (3D – New 3D extrusion from the selected contour).
Select both 3D layers and turn 3D – Merge 3D Layers (3D – Merge 3D layers).
6. We work with a 3D scene
To have access to the parameters of 3D objects, we need to open two panels: the 3D panel and Properties (Properties) (both are in the main menu Window (Window)).
The 3D panel contains a list of all the components of the scene and, if you select one of them, we can edit its parameters in the panel. Properties (Properties). Therefore, always pay attention to whether the desired object is selected before editing it.
If activate Move Tool (V) (Move), a set of special 3D modes will appear at the top of the options bar. By selecting one of them, we can make certain manipulations with the object of the scene (movement, rotation, scaling, etc.).
They can also be used to change the current view from the camera.
7. Configure 3D objects
On the 3D panel, select both 3D components with letters and set them on the property panel. Extrusion Depth (Extrusion Depth) by 50 pixels.
Select the “Marble” component and switch to the tab in the property panel Cap (Capital). Install Sides (Parties) on Front and Back (In the front and in the back), Bevel Width (Chamfer width) – by 2% and Contour (Contour) – on Half Round (Semicircle).
8. Create marble material
Select all materials of the Marble component and configure them on the properties panel:
Color values are in RGB format:
- Specular (Highlight color): 217, 217, 217
- Shine (Gloss): 30%
- Reflection (Reflection): 10%
- Bump (Relief): 10%
Choose Front Inflation Material (Material of the front bulge) component “Marble”. On the property bar, click on the texture button Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Replace Texture (Replace texture). Open the texture of marble from additional materials.
To better see the result of the work, choose the component. Infinite Light one (Infinite Light) and install Intensity (Intensity) by 35%, and Shadow – softness (Shadows – Smoothing) – 30%. Then using Move Tool (V) (Move) Grab the light source and move it around the stage until the texture appears.
Click the texture button again Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Edit UV Properties (Edit UV properties).
Customize Tile (Mosaic) until we get a suitable result.
9. Reapply the texture of the material.
Select the remaining marble materials, click on the texture button Diffuse (Scattering) and in the list that opens, select the marble texture used in the previous step.
Select the component “Marble” and install Texture Mapping (Display texture) on Tile (Mosaic).
After that you can adjust the UV properties for each material separately.
10. Create a rose gold material
Select all the materials of the component “Rose Gold”, click on the texture button Diffuse (Scattering) and choose Remove Texture (Remove texture).
Use the following settings for materials:
Color values are given in RGB mode:
- Diffuse (Scattering): 238, 107, 77
- Specular (Highlight color): 217, 157, 143
- Shine (Gloss): 70%
- Reflection (Reflection): 35%
- Bump (Relief): 1%
Select the component “Rose Gold” and set Texture Mapping (Display texture) on Tile (Mosaic).
Choose Extrusion Material (Material extrusion) component “Rose Gold”, click on the folder icon opposite Bump (Relief) and choose Load Texture (Load texture). Open the seamless texture of gold from additional materials.
To more clearly see the texture on the 3D-model, you can temporarily increase the value Bump (Relief). Customize UV texture properties Bump (Relief) until we get the desired result.
11. Customize the texture of the relief
Click on the texture button Bump (Relief) and choose Edit Texture (Edit texture).
As a result, a document with our texture will open.
Add an adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Black White (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Black and White) and customize it:
- Reds (Red): 40
- Yellows (Yellow): 60
- Greens (Green): 40
- Cyans (Blue): 60
- Blues (Blue): 20
- Magentas (Purple): 80
Next, add an adjustment layer. Brightness/ Contrast (Brightness / Contrast), put a tick in front of Use Legacy (Use former) and install Contrast (Contrast) at -50.
Save (Ctrl + S) and close the document.
Install Bump (Relief) at 1%.
12. Adjust the stage lighting
Choose a component Infinite Light one (Infinite Light) and place it in front of the 3D letters. On the property panel, you can go to the tab Coordinates (Coordinates) and enter numeric values.
At the bottom of the 3D panel click on the button Add New Light to Scene (Add new light to the scene) and choose New Point Light (New point light).
Choose Point Light (Spot light), set Intensity (Intensity) and Shadow – softness (Shadow – Smoothing) by 30%, tick the box Light Falloff (Light decay), then set the parameter Inner (Internal) at 350, and Outer (External) – at 500.
Place a point source of light above the text and move it slightly to the right.
Choose a component Environment (Wednesday), click on the texture button IBL (Isbi) and choose Replace Texture (Replace texture). Choose a picture with the interior of the additional materials.
Install Intensity (Intensity) by 35% and Ground Plane – Shadows – Opacity (Baseline – Shadows – Opacity) – 30%.
We select the final view from the camera and using Move Tool (V) (Move) move the texture Environment (Wednesday) until we get a suitable result.
This is an important step, on which depends how the reflections and general illumination on the final result will look.
13. Render and adjust the 3D scene.
Move on 3D – Render 3D Layer (3D – Rendering the 3D layer). Rendering may take some time, but you can stop it at any time by pressing the Esc key.
Add a correction layer above the 3D layer Levels (Levels) and transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G). Install Shadows (Shadows) by 5, Gamma (Gamma) – by 1.10, Highlights (Light) – at 237.
14. Add a plant
Move on File – Place Linked (File – Put connected) and choose a picture with a plant from additional materials. If necessary, adjust its size.
Name the “plant” layer and move it to the right side of the working canvas so that only a part of the leaves are visible.
Move on Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) and set Radius (Radius) by 5.
Congratulations, we are done!
At the beginning of the lesson we created several figures, with the help of which we divided the text into two parts. Then they transformed the figures into 3D layers and set up their parameters. After that we created materials of marble and pink gold and set up the lighting. At the end, we rendered the final result and added a photo with a plant.
