In this tutorial you will create a very interesting fantasy collage. Work with adjustment layers and masks, as well as light and shadow.
Here is the image that we will create.
To work, we need the following images: To take some of them you need to register on the deviantart.com website. Registration will take you a couple of minutes, for that you will have access to a huge selection of clip art for your works.
Materials for the lesson:

Right click on this layer and convert it to Smart object (Convert to Smart Object) / Call Free transformation (Free Transform) Ctrl + T and rotate the mount vertically. As an example, see the image below. Name this layer “Island”.
Step 5. Now we will add five adjustment layers and for each of them we will need Create clipping mask \ CreateClippingMask (RMB by layer and select this item). The first adjustment layer will do Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) Brightness 5, Contrast 64. Create a clipping mask for this layer.
Step 6. Add an adjustment layer Color balance (Color Balance), to do this, click on the icon of the adjustment layer in the layers palette. Create a clipping mask for this layer and use the following settings.
Step 7. The next adjustment layer we will add will be Photo filter (Photo Filter). Also enable this layer for this layer. Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask), use the settings as in the screenshot. Put the blending mode (blend mode) for a layer Overlap (Overlay) and lower opacity (Opacity) by 50%

Right click on this layer and convert it to Smart object (Convert to Smart Object). Then the menu Filter – Rendering – Blick (Filter> Render> Lens). Use the settings in the screenshot below.
Around the highlight, the lighting in the sky took a strong red tint, in order to fix this, go to the menu Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Curves), right-click on the layer and select the option Create clipping mask. Settings for Curves, see below.
Step 43 Now we do it, let’s go. Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness / Contrast (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Brightness / Contrast), here create clipping mask not necessary, set the layer settings as in the screenshot. Fill the layer mask with black, select a white soft Brush (Brush) and create some rays. To better understand this process, see the following image.
Step 44. Download cloud brushes or download an image of clouds using the link indicated at the beginning of the lesson, create a new layer above the rest and draw clouds on it as shown in the figure below. Set the blending mode for this layer. Lightening (Screen).
Step 45. Now we do it, let’s go. Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness / Contrast (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Brightness / Contrast). In the layer options, enable Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask). Use the settings as screenshot below. Then we go like this: in the menu Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Color Balance (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Color Balance). In the layer options, enable Create clipping mask and set these settings as shown below.
Step 46 Repeat the previous two steps, place the second layer with clouds just to the left and below (see the figure below), combine the two layers with clouds and the four adjustment layers that you created for the clouds into one group Ctrl+G and name the group “Clouds”.
Step 47. Add another dragon to the main document. Right click on this layer and convert it to Smart object (Convert to Smart Object). Take advantage of Free transformation (Free Transform) using the key combination Ctrl+T. Shrink the dragon and position it as shown. Then go to the menu Layer – Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All). Take black, soft Brush (Brush) and swipe along the edges of the wings of the dragon, so the effect will be like the wings shine from the bright light. Put the Blend mode (blending mode) for this layer Linear light (Linear Light). Now we go Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness / Contrast (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Brightness / Contrast). In the layer options, enable Create clipping mask. Use the settings as screenshot below. Combine these two layers in a group and name it “Dragon 3”.
Step 48 Add the fourth dragon to the main document. Right click on this layer and convert it to Smart object (Convert to Smart Object). Take advantage of Free transformation (Free Transform) using the key combination Ctrl+T. Shrink the dragon and position it as shown. Then go to the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) and use the settings as in the screenshot. Now again the menu Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur) and set the settings as in the screenshot.
Install blending mode (blending mode) for this layer Linear light (Linear Light) Now we go Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Brightness / Contrast(Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Brightness / Contrast). In the layer options, enable Create clipping mask. Use the settings as screenshot below. Combine these two layers into a group and name it “Dragon 4”.
Step 49 In this step, we will add a flame to the first dragon, escaping from its mouth. To do this, take any image with fire or use the link at the beginning of the lesson, cut the appropriate element and using Free transformation (Free Transform) Ctrl+T , insert it near the dragon’s mouth.
Step 50. Create a new layer above all the others and use soft, white Brush (Brush), draw a few lines over the fire. Double click on the layer to call Layer styles (Layer Style) and use the settings as shown in the screenshot below.
OuterGlow – External glow,InnerGlow – Inner glow.
Well, that’s it, our flying island is ready. Working with corrective layers is very interesting and useful and I hope you have had the opportunity to practice using them in this lesson. View in real size here.
