Draw a pencil in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to draw a pencil in Photoshop.

Final result:

Note: The lesson is made in the version of Adobe Photoshop CC, the approximate runtime of 45 minutes, level: beginners and intermediate

Step 1

To start, create a new document. (Ctrl + N) and set the parameters that you see in the screenshot. Turn on the grid (View – Show – Grid) (View> Show> Grid), and turn on the snap to the grid (View – Snap to – Grid) (View> Snap To> Grid).

Set the grid every 5px (Editing – Settings – Guides, Grid, and Fragments) (Edit> Preferences> Guides, Grid Slices) and focus on the Grid. Set the line every (Gridline Every) set to 5, and the point Inner division to (Subdivision) set 1. Set the grid color to # a7a7a7 and click OK.

Step 2

For foreground color set # dcb99b, select instrument Rectangle ( Rectangle Tool) and draw a 15 x 65px shape. Focus on the bottom of this figure, select the tool Pen (Pen Tool) and click on the lower left anchor point to remove it.

Now using the Direct Selection Tool, click on the remaining anchor point and drag it 10 pixels to the right, as shown in the third screenshot:

Step 3

Set for foreground color # ce9367 and instrument Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) draw a shape measuring 20 x 65px. Arrange the shape as shown in the screenshot. Tool Pen (Pen Tool) remove the left lower anchor point.

Tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool) move the remaining anchor point 10px to the left:

For foreground color set the color to # b56230 and tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) draw a shape measuring 15 x 65px. Place the drawn figure as shown in the screenshot.

Choose a tool Pen (Pen Tool) and remove the right lower anchor point, and with the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool) move the remaining anchor point 10px to the left.

Step 5

Choose a color # ffca5a for foreground and instrument Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) draw a shape measuring 15 x 160px. Arrange the shape as shown in the screenshot.

Apply the command to the yellow rectangle layer. Deformation (Edit – Transform – Warp) (Edit> Transform> Warp). From the drop-down list, select the type Lower Arch (Arc Lower), in field Bend (Bend) enter the value 75 and press Enter, to apply new options.

Add a layer style to the yellow rectangle layer. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

For foreground color select color # ff8c15, tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) draw a shape measuring 20 x 160px and position it as shown in the screenshot.

Apply the commands to the orange rectangle layer.Deformation (Edit – Transform – Warp) (Edit> Transform> Warp).

From the drop-down list, select the type Lower arch (Arc Lower), in the field Bend (Bend) enter the value 100 and press the Enter key to apply the new parameters.

Step 8

Add some layer styles to the orange shape layer:

For foreground color choose # c42915, tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) draw a 15 x 160px shape and position it as shown in the screenshot.
Apply the command to the red rectangle layer. Deformation (Edit – Transform – Warp) (Edit> Transform> Warp).

From the drop-down list, select the type Lower arch (Arc Lower), in the field Bend (Bend) enter a value of 75 and press the Enter key to apply the new parameters.

Apply a layer style to a red vector shape. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

For foreground color select # 3b3c40, tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) draw a 15 x 160px shape and position it as shown in the screenshot.

Focus on the bottom of the newly drawn shape and tool. Pen (Pen Tool) remove the right anchor point. Choose a tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool) and move the remaining anchor point 25px to the right:

Make sure the dark rectangle layer is active and select the tool Ellipse(Ellipse Tool). Hold down the Alt key on the keyboard and draw a 20px circle. Apply some layer styles:

Step 13

For foreground color choose # fa6580, select instrument Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool) and on the property bar (at the top of the screen) set the radius value (Radius) 5px.

Now, draw a 50 x 30px shape and position it as shown in the first image.

To the layer with the pink shape, apply the command Deformation (Edit – Transform – Warp) (Edit> Transform> Warp).

From the drop-down list, select the type Lower arch (Arc Lower), in the field Bend (Bend) enter a value of -60 and press the Enter key to apply the new parameters.

Apply some layer styles to this pink vector shape:

For foreground color choose # dfdfe1, tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) draw a 50 x 20px shape and position it as shown in the screenshot.

For this step you need to install the Circus every 1px (Editing – Settings – Guides, Grid, and Fragments) (Edit> Preferences> Guides, Grid Slices).

Focus on the shape of the gray rectangle and select the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool). Select the left anchor point and move it 1px to the left, then select the right anchor point and move it 1px to the right. Function Snap to Grid (Snap to Grid) will facilitate the work.

Make sure that the gray vector layer is active and activate the tool. Ellipse (Ellipse Tool). Hold the Alt key and draw a 52 x 4px shape.

Focus on the top of the gray shape and hold down the Shift key on the keyboard and draw a 52 x 8px shape.

Step 17

Apply layer styles to a layer with a gray vector shape:

Duplicate gray vector layer (Ctrl + J). Right-click on the duplicate and remove layer styles from it. (Clear layer styles) (Clear Layer Style). For a duplicate, set the Fill parameter to 0% and apply layer styles: 30

For foreground color select black and tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) draw a 52 x 4px shape. Move the layer with the black oval shape to the back (Shift + Ctrl + [).

Select all the layers that belong to the pencil and convert them to a Convert to Smart Object (right-click on any of the selected layers and select Convert to Smart Object).

Make sure the smart object layer is active and invoke the command Transform (Ctrl + T). Rotate the pencil 45 degrees and press Enter to apply the transform. Apply layer styles to the layer with the smart object.

Duplicate the smart object (Ctrl + J) and delete the layer styles from the duplicate. Apply layer styles to this duplicate. Color overlay (Color Overlay) with black color:

Right-click on the smart object that you created in the previous step and convert it into a smart object again (from the list that appears, select Convert to smart object). Move the resulting smart object just 15px down and 15px to the right, lower the opacity to 30% and place it in the background (Shift + Ctrl + [). We added a shadow under the pencil.

Step 23

Blur a layer with a pencil shadow filter Gaussian blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 20px. Also apply a filter to the layer with the shadow of a pencil. Motion blur (Filter – Blur – Blur in motion) (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur). Here use the angle (Angle) -45 and Offset 50px.

In this step, create a background. Create new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N) and place it in the background (Shift + Ctrl + [). Choose a tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool) and fill the new layer with a light gray color (# e1ebf5). In the final, apply to the gray fill layer Noise filter(Filter – Noise – Add Noise) (Filter> Noise> Add Noise). The background is ready.
