Drawing an Easter Egg in Photoshop

Easter is coming soon and in today’s lesson, I will show you a simple way to draw an egg in Photoshop. The egg is made from scratch, and it will be created as a vector shape, which allows you to change the size without losing quality.

The lesson will take a little time. You will be able to use the received decor in your greeting cards and flyers.

Materials for the lesson:

Step 1

Open a new PSD file, 500×500 pixels. Add color # 8bd5c8 as a background layer fill. Create a new layer on top of the background. Activate the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) and draw a simple oval shape in yellow. Name this layer “Egg” (Egg).

Step 2

Let’s change the shape of the oval a bit, making it more like an egg. To do this, activate the tool Convert anchor point (Convert Point Tool). Click on the top of the ellipse. You will have guides. Move them so that the upper part of the egg becomes more acute. Also use the CTRL key when working with anchor points. Pinching CTRL you switch to the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool). In order for the transformation to be uniform you can use the auxiliary Mesh (View – Show – Grid).

Continue to change the shape of the oval. Using Convert anchor point (Convert Point Tool) convert the pivot points that are on the left and right side of the egg.

Step 3

As you can see, the egg looks completely flat. We will fix it using Layer Style (Layer Style). Double-click the “Egg” layer to open it. Layer Style (Layer Style). Go to tab Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) and use the gradient with two yellow tones. If you want, of course you can use other colors: red, green or any other.

Also add Internal glow (Inner Glow):

And then Inner shadow (Inner Shadow):

Step 4

The egg is ready for decoration. For decoration I will use wonderful romanian ethnic patterns.

Create a new layer on top of the previous ones and name it “Decoration” (Decoration). Open and save to the folder of patterns you need. Set the foreground color to white. Activate the tool Arbitrary shape (Custom Shape Tool). Draw on the new layer the shape of the future decoration.

It is necessary to change the shape of the pattern for the “Dressing” layer. Switch to Editing – Transform – Warp (Edit – Transform – Warp). You will see a white dot. Just drag it down.

Translator’s Note: type of deformation – Arch.

Right-click on the name of the “Decorate” layer and convert it to Smart object (Convert into Smart Object). Then go to Layer Style (Layer Style) and add Stroke Outside (Stroke), color – black, size 2-3 pixels .. Lower Opacity (Opacity) layer up to 30%.

Step 5

Now “impose” the pattern on the egg. Hold key CTRL and click on the thumbnail of the “Egg” layer. Go to the Dressing layer and add Vector mask (Add Layer Mask) by clicking on the icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

You see that now only the area on the egg is visible from the decoration.

Step 6

If your Easter egg will be on the surface, then you need to add a shadow or reflection.

Group the two layers related to the egg. Duplicate the group and convert it to Smart object (Convert group to smart object). Flip a copy vertically. Activate the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) and create a selection with rounded corners at the base of the egg. Add to layer Vector mask (Layer Mask) and lower the opacity (opacity) to thirty%

Step 7

We are done! Now it’s up to you. You can experiment and add small cracks in the egg, as well as other Easter attributes of the decor.

I hope you liked the lesson! You can also use me already made. blanks for your Easter cards.
