In this lesson, you will learn how to create space photo manipulation using effects, color correction, blend modes, and elements in Photoshop. Create your image by experimenting with color and shape.

The final image.
Step 1
Open file jameswhite_canvas.psd in photoshop. Create seven groups in the layers panel and name them as follows: Flares; Highlights; Lines; Model; Orbs; Colour Spheres; Background Colors.
Step 2
In Group Background Colors create a new layer called gradient 1. Choose a tool Gradient tool (G) (Gradient) Hold Shift and create a vertical gradient from brown to blue.
Create a new layer. gradient 2 and at the top of the document stretch the vertical gradient from blue to transparent.
Create another new layer gradient 3, and create a gradient from orange to transparent on the sides of the document. For this layer add Layer Mask (layer mask) and, using a gradient from black to transparent, darken the top and bottom. Set blending mode for this layer. Overlay (Overlap).
Note translator :The author does not give the color code of the gradients, pick up the gradients yourself. Or use my – for a layer gradient one – from # 021f33to# dcc27c. For layer gradient 2 -from # 596f5e to transparent.
Step 3
Open the model image in Photoshop File> Place (File – Post). Apply scaling to the model image. Add a Layer Mask (layer mask). Use a soft black brush to work on the shoulders and neck of the model, changing the opacity of the brush. Set layer blending mode Overlay (Overlap). Put a layer in a folder Model.
Note translator :do not forget to separate the model from the background.
Step 4
Below the model layer, create a new layer called Highlight. Choose a tool (Gradient Tool) (G) (Gradient) radial from white to transparent and create a gradient near the face of the model. Set layer blending mode Soft light (Soft light) and set the layer opacity to 40%. We will use this method to create a twist later.
Note translator :highlighting the author shows where you want to create a gradient.
Step 5
Open the folder Color Spheres. Choose a tool Ellipse tool (U) (Ellipse) and draw a circle around the model’s head (hold the Shift to keep the proportions). Rasterize the layer. On the Layers panel, click. Lock transparent pixels (Lock transparent pixels). Select a radial gradient from black to white and apply a gradient inside the circle. Set the layer blending mode to Overlay (Overlap), Opacity (Opacity) 85%.
Note translator :The author has two identical screenshots, navigate through the screenshot of the next step.
Step 6
Duplicate the circle layer three times and place these layers in the layers panel below the circle layer you created in the previous step. Name the layers from bottom to top. Sphere 1, Sphere 2 and Sphere 3. On the layer Sphere 1 fill the circle with green color on the layer Sphere 2 – brown, on a layer Sphere 3 – linear blue – blue gradient. For all three layers set the blending mode Overlay (Overlap) and opacity of the layer is 45%. Move the layer with the green circle slightly up, the layer with the brown one to the right and down.
Note translator :create a selection layer Sphere 4 and pressing the key Alt, create layer masks on layers Sphere 1 and Sphere 2. The mask will hide the color of the circles on the face of the model, leaving a small arc of color. Cancel selection. On the layer Sphere 3 create a layer mask, select a linear gradient from black to transparent and on the mask, hold down the key SHIFT, drag the gradient line from the beginning to about the middle of the circle.
Step 7
AT Illustrator select instrument Ellipse and create an oval without a fill. Stroke a 3 dot black dotted line with a 2 dash long dash and 5 pt spacing. Copy the oval and paste it into the group. Orbs in photoshop. Name layer Track 1.
Translator’s Note :This step can be done in Photoshop.
Create a new layer, select the tool. EllipseTool (U) (Oval) in mode Paths (Outlines), create an outline of the oval and stroke the outline with a black hard brush 3-5 px, having previously adjusted the interval in the brush settings. Put this layer in a group Orbs.
Step 8
With active tool Move Tool (Move) position the layer with a dotted line around the model’s head. For this layer, add a layer mask and a black soft brush to erase in some places (vary the opacity of the brush) and behind the model’s head. On the Layers panel, click. Lock transparent pixels (Lock transparent pixels). Choose a beige-red-black gradient and apply on a layer with a dotted line. Duplicate the layer name Track 2 and turn.
Step 9
Now let’s place some balls around the hair. First create a new layer, then select the tool EllipseTool (U) (Oval) and create a small circle. Rasterize the layer. On the Layers panel, click. Lock transparent pixels (Lock transparent pixels). Choose a tool (Gradient Tool)
(G) (Gradient) radial black and white and apply to the circle as in step 5. Set the blending mode Overlay (Overlap). Duplicate the layer several times, scale and place around the head and on the dotted paths.
Step 10
Open group Lines, select instrument Line tool (U) (Line) width 5 px and draw a line at the level of the upper edge of the eyes of the Model. Set layer blending mode Overlay (Overlap) and opacity up to 75%. Duplicate the layer and slide down. You should have five layers with a line. Add a mask to the group and with a black soft brush on the mask hide some of the lines in the eye area.
Translator’s Note: To move the duplicate of the layer with the line, hold down Shift and press the arrow on the keyboard up or down, thereby moving the line 10 px. Set the group’s blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) and lower the opacity to 60%.
Step 11
Duplicate group Lines and merge into one layer Ctrl +E. Next, we go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur (Filter-Blur-Blur according to Gauss). Set the blur radius to 8 px. The opacity of the layer is up to 90%. This will give a beautiful glow to the lines.
Step 12
In Group Highlights create a new layer and name it White. Choose a tool Gradient tool (G) (Gradient) radial from white to transparent and create a gradient at the ends of the lines, as in step 4. Also create a small gradient on the Model’s right eye. Set the layer blend mode with gradients to Overlay (Overlapping) and opacity up to 70%.
Step 13
Below layer White create a new layer and name it black. Change the color of the gradient from black to transparent and create gradients in some places to enhance shadows in dark places. This will add depth to the overall scene. Concentrate on the hair, eyes and lips to reveal the details. Set the black gradient layer to blend mode Overlay (Overlap) and opacity of the layer 34%.
Step 14
Open the file called jameswhite_flare in photoshop File> Place (File – Post), which you will find in the downloaded archive for the lesson and place it in the group Flares. Set layer blending mode Screen (Lightening / Screen). Next, we go to Image–Adjustment-Hue / Saturation(Ctrl + U) (Image-Correction-Hue / Saturation). Check the box Colorize (Tint) and install Hue (Color tone) to 45, Saturation (Saturation) to 85. This will give the glare a pleasant yellowish tint. Duplicate the highlight layer several times, scale and place copies on the canvas at your discretion.
Step 15
Create a new layer above the group. Flares and fill with brown color. Set layer blending mode Soft light (Soft light) and opacity up to 50%. This will add a warm golden hue to our work. Experiment with different colors and choose what you like.
Step 16
I added text to the work, as I think the words decorate the design. You can add any text you like, if you want to use mine, then open File> Place (File – Place) file jameswhite_text.eps and place it at the bottom of the work.
At the end, add a mask to the group. Color Spheres, select a gradient from black to transparent and mask circles to highlight the Model.
We are done!
