How to break an egg in Photoshop – Part 2

Today we will learn to draw a terrific broken egg. To achieve the result, the author presented 50 steps in front of you, with the help of which you will learn how to create forms, use gradients and various methods of selection. Be patient and try to create your little masterpiece.

Part 2 – Broken Egg

Step 1. So, only with the help of Photoshop, we have created a wonderful egg! And now we need to break it!

Let’s merge layers into groups. You already understand how to highlight the contents of the layer. Now hold [Ctrl], click on another layer. Do you see? You already have 2 layers selected. You can also do this by holding down the [Shift] and clicking on the first layer that you want to select, and then on the last layer, which will be included in the group. Thus, you get a selection of all the layers that are between the first and the last. After that click [Ctrl] + [G] and all layers will be in the same folder. See how I did it:

Create a new layer for the group Egg and duplicate it.

Now click [Ctrl] + [E] and the group is converted to one layer. That’s what we need! In groups it is generally very convenient to work. In this case, no need to give a name to each layer. Just find the right group and open it. You can also with active MoveTool (move tool) click[Ctrl] + [Click] on the image. This, depending on your personal settings, will move you either to the desired group or to the desired layer.

Step 2. So, I hope that you have the following: groups “Background”, “Whole Egg” and separate layers with a shadow. I remind you that it would be nice to make a copy. Layer Egg, (if you haven’t done it before) before we get to work.
All subsequent steps will be related to the group. Broken Egg
Take the tool Polygonalmarqueetool (Polygonal Selection) or LassoTool (Lasso). Make a selection imitating a small hole at the top of the egg. Just like mine:

Click Delete.

Step 3. Make another selection.

Go to EditTransformRotate (Edit – Transform – Rotate), move the point of rotation to the bottom left corner

And rotate the selected area slightly.

Do the same from the opposite side.

Step 4. And now we’ll add some volume. Take Polygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso) and make a selection as shown:

Fill the selection with color # 97612e. Do not forget to open a new layer and place it under the egg layer. Here is what comes out:

Do the same on the other side. Just imagine how it should look. That’s what happened with me:

Step 5. Highlight the contents on the copy of the “shape” layer ([Ctrl] + [Click] by layer). It turns out the selection. Take Polygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso) and select the mode Intersectwithselection (Intersection with selection). The last selection will be the intersection of the two previous selections. Make a selection on the inside of the egg:

Choose the color # ab6622 and fill the selection. This is what happens:

Step 6. TakePolygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso). We will try to make our egg more stylish. Make a selection, as shown below and click Delete.

Step 7.Select the contents of the layer and use the arrows on the keyboard to move it slightly to the right.

Open a new layer and place it under the previous one. Take Brush Tool (Brush) color- # 553413 and try to create the illusion of three-dimensional image:

Step 8. Go back to the main shell layer. Select it and create a new clipping layer:

From translator: Look at the location of the layers in the picture, make sure that you get the same!
Take GradientTool(Gradient), choose a rather dark color (for example # 553413) and give the image a depth. You can even use the gradient several times, it is up to you.

Move the contents of this layer a few pixels down and to the right:

Create a new clipping layer.

Choose a light shade (# e7e4e2). Take Brushtool (Brush) and process those areas of the shell, which, in your opinion, should reflect the light.

Select any selection tool, move the selection down a little and press Delete

Try changing the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap)

Step 9a. So, we broke the top of the egg. Now there will be nothing new, we just duplicate all the previous steps and break the shell elsewhere:

I think there is no need to explain everything again. See how I do it, and repeat after me. You can use your tools and settings. By the way, this will be very useful to you, since it is time to use your own brains, and not just copy someone else’s work. At the same time, based on this lesson, you can create your interesting work in the near future. Forward!

Step 9b. Go to the layer with the egg. Make a selection and click Delete. At this point we will make a new hole:

Try to modify the shell, highlighting the individual sections and transforming them:

Step 9c. Now we will make the surface of the egg more voluminous. We have already done this, just look at my drawings.

Step 9e. Open a new layer.

We will break the egg from the side.

Fill the selection with color # a05f20 and add gradients to the shade # 583a1c.

Do not forget to create a clipping mask.

Move the gradient a little to the right, go to the attached layer (see my picture). Take a light shade and process the edges of the shell. Once again make a selection, move it the way you have moved the gradient before and click Delete. You should have light lines along the edges of the surface:

This is how it looks now:

Step 10. Now there are two holes in the shell. You can do more, but do not overdo it. Now we will try to connect the holes in the shell. That is, we will make some cracks. TakePolygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso) and start making a selection. Make sure the lines are a few pixels wide. Change the direction and shape of future cracks. If necessary, enlarge the picture. This will allow you to make the lines more accurate:

Step 11. Create a new bound layer and make a selection.

Click [Shift] + [Ffive] and fill the selected area with the color # 322416. Deselect:

While the crack looks too primitive, it lacks volume. But we will fix it. Go in FilterLiquify (Filter – Plastic)

Press T to activate the tool Turbulencetool (Turbulence)

Use the following brush settings:

Achieve the same result as in the picture:

You can also work with the tool. Puckertool (Folds). He is also in the filter Liquify (Plastic) (but don’t get too carried away):

These details that we have contributed are in fact very important for the overall type of work:

Step 12. Do not forget about the lighting. Choose a light tint of the type # f7ce9e, set the following brush parameters: opacity 25%, fade – 50%. Take a small, stiff round brush and start painting. Zoom in and focus on the arrows in my drawings:

Step 13. And now we will add one small nuance. On the base layer with the egg, make a selection in the shape of a triangle and press [Ctrl+ C] (copy). With this, we will copy only what is inside the selection to the new layer.

Click [Ctrl + V] or Paste (insert). Thus, you will transfer the contents of the selection to a new layer.

Now go to ImageAdjustmentsBrightness/ Contrast (Image – Correction – Brightness / Contrast) and, as it were, separate the triangle from the rest of the surface.

You can also play with Levels (Levels).

Now on the new layer add a little shadow to it. Take Polygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso) and make a selection as shown in the image below: Watch only where your light falls from. Take the Gradient and fill the selection with a dark color:

Deselect and blur slightly with filter. GaussianBlur (Gaussian blur).

Remember that as a house is built of bricks, so our work consists of heaps of small details. Try to be extremely careful.

Step 14. And now repeat the previous steps and make some more cracks and triangles on the shell.

Now take the tool again. Polygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso), mark a fairly large area and click Delete. Do not forget that you must have an active core layer with an egg:

Step 15. In the next steps, we have to create that part of the shell that has broken off the egg. Let’s call this part of the work “Breakaway Shells” Maybe it sounds not very nice, but it is clear what we have to do now.

To begin with, we will give the egg more volume. In step 2, I asked you to make a copy of the egg layer. I hope you listened to me. Now select the contents of this layer. [Ctrl] + [Click]. You can see that you get a selection of the entire form, located on the main layer.

Now with the help Polygonallasso, modeintersectwithselection (Polygonal lasso in the Intersection mode with selection) select the part we need:

Open a new layer and place it under the main layer Egg. Fill the selection with color # 7d4b1a. Create another selection that mimics the inside of the egg.

.Click Delete. You can also use the filter. Liquify (Plastic), it will make drawing more interesting.

Step 16. We will now add shadows to this layer. Create an attached layer. Choose color # 543516. You can use color and darker. Experiment with gradients

Create a selection of the inside of the shell. Open a new layer, choose a very light shade. Move the selection and click Delete. In short, do everything that we did in the previous steps.

If the color is too bright, reduce the transparency to 40%.

Step 17. Now go back to the copy of the whole egg layer. Highlight it by clicking [Ctrl] + [Click]

Go back to the current egg layer and click[Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Click] You should have this selection:

Then use the tool again.Polygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso), modeIntersectwithselection (Polygonal selection in Intersect mode with selection):

You can copy and paste the contents of the selection, or go to SelectInverse (Select – Invert) and click Delete. However, in the second case, you will need to make another copy of the original layer with the egg.

Slightly turn:

Step 18. Now we will make the inside of the “broken” shell. Make a selection of the original Egg layer. On a new layer fill it with a dark color.

Go in Edit > Transform > Warp (Edit – Transform – Warp) and fit the two layers under each other.

You can do the same with the outside.

Do not be afraid to change our object. If it seems to you that everything does not look very beautiful, do not forget that we work with a document of very large size, and some of the shortcomings will be invisible when we reduce it.

Try to achieve depth and volume of the image. Clipping masks will stand you in good stead.

You can darken the part that I have highlighted. Gradient (Gradient) or BurnTool (Dimmer).

At the end, unfold the padded part of the shell as follows:

Step 19. We ended up with a big shell, now it’s time to make small ones. The following steps will be dedicated to this. We will need to scatter small pieces of shell around the egg. Now we make our brush. Create a new document with dimensions of 328 by 400 pixels. On it create several quadrangles of different sizes.

Use for this tool Polygonallassotool (Polygonal Lasso), fill with black. Then go to Edit > Definebrushpreset. (Editing – Define Brush). The brush is ready. Just give it your name. After that, you can close the document without saving.

Step 20. Now we need to adjust the brush. Go to the brush settings and set the following parameters:

Step 21 Well, almost everything is ready. Take the color # 9d5e25 and gently draw around the egg. Do not forget to change the size of the brush. At the beginning of the lesson, I explained how to do this very quickly.

All our little shells are on the same layer. Now click [Ctrl] + [Click] and select them. Choose a black color, for example, # 704219, create a new layer under the one on which you made the selection. Fill it with black and slide it down a little. The image after this should be more voluminous:

Use the tool Dodgetool(Brightener) so that the shells do not look too uniform

We used dark color to add volume, now we will add a bit of a light shade. Imagine that our shells are floating in space. We have already done this in this lesson. See how I did it :.Newlayer > selection > paintwithlightcolor > moveselection > [Delete]. (New layer – selection – light shade – move selection – Delete).

Now we repeat this step again. Just make more flying egg shells.

Step 22 We are almost done. It remains to fix a few minor errors. It is necessary to remove part of the shell on the main layer of the shell.

Here is the final result:

Step 23 Now, at the very end of our lesson, we will add some egg white. Take the tool Pentool (Pen). Choose a very light, but not white shade, such as # f7f5f3. We will try to create an effect as if the protein flows from cracks and holes in the egg. I did it like this. The Pen Tool made many points and modified each of them using the tool. ConvertPointtool (Conversion). This gave our future squirrel uniformity.

As you can see, our form consists of many small points. Using the tool ConvertPointtool (Conversion) I was able to change each of them.

This is what happened:

Do not forget that our egg falls, so make sure that the protein flows upward, not downward:

Some more fixes:

If you prefer, you can rasterize this layer, but this is not necessary, as we continue to work on the bound layer.

Step 24 Open a new layer, create a clipping mask. Choose a completely white color and paint a few highlights on the squirrel with a brush.

Now in a darker color, draw the shadows:

Almost done:

Add some more shadow, repeat this step several times.

Rejoice – a little bit is left and the form is ready

Be very accurate, do not take your time for this part of the work.

Step 25. That’s all. Now sprinkle the protein around the egg. Let the spray fly in all directions! See how I did it:

You can also change the color of the shadow under the egg and make the overall color solution a bit more contrast or bright. Experiment for this with Adjustments.

And I also want to say goodbye:
Hope you learned something. If yes – I’m happy. I tried to explain everything, but if you did not understand something, I would be happy to answer your questions.
