Vector character

Today we will create a character using vector graphics in PS. For this, Adobe Illustrator would work well, but you can also use Photoshop CS.

Translator’s commentary: Dear compatriots on the great Adobe Photoshop program, the lesson is very interesting and informative, but the author of this lesson did not worry at all about us, poorly described his actions, relying on the screenshots he had made. I will try to describe in more detail his every step. I also want to add that every detail of our character is a separate layer-shape to which you do not need to apply the function “Rasterize the layer”, otherwise the character will cease to be vector.

For a start, as always create a new document.

Now select the tool Custom shape tool(U) (“Arbitrary figure”) to create the initial “parts” of our character: the head, legs and body.
In the screenshot below, the settings for the shape. Only change color to black.

Translator’s comment: Select Ellipse tool (U) (Ellipse tool) and draw a circle, or whatever, depending on who you want to create.

For eyes, use any shape that fits.

Translator’s comment: Personally, I looked at a standard set of arbitrary figures and did not see one that the author used, but maybe I just did not see :). In general, I had to do it myself, from scrap materials.

For the body, draw a circle, see that each shape is on a separate layer.

Now we will work with legs and other parts.
Legs make yellow, so you can see how they should then be in the picture.

Translator’s comment: To quickly change the color of a shape, double-click on the layer thumbnail in the layers palette and select a color.

An interesting figure, looks like a hairstyle.

Translator’s comment: I also did not find such a figure, I chose what I liked.

Next, the author, using Pen (Pen) depicted just such a figure.

Do not forget to look after the balance yellow / black. Reduce or enlarge the image. And now use an arbitrary shape to draw a hand.

When you work with a large number of layers, it is better to distribute them into groups. It will save your time in finding the desired layer.

It is better to create groups for the legs, body and eyes.

You can also define for groups of colors in the layer settings.

Eyes! Some experiments on layer style.

Now we have beautiful and very different eyes.

No need to repeat everything again, just copy the layer style to the other eye.

Transform a little eyes.
The right eye (the character’s left eye) should be smaller and slightly distorted.
Translator comment: I used Distortion (Editing – Transforming – Distortion)

Now the next step, we will do the glare. To do this, we need a selection and other basic techniques.

First head. Select the desired layer, then Tool “Oval area, leave only that part of the selection that we need, as in the figure below.

Further Select – Modify – Contract (Selection – Modification – Compress).

When the selection is done, create a new layer and fill it with a gradient from White to Transparent.

Layer Mask – Fill the mask with a gradient from Black to White.
Remember this scheme, as we need it a few more times.
1. Select. (Highlighting)
2. Contract and Further. (Squeeze)
3. Create layer. (Create new layer)
4. White Gradient fill. (Fill white)
5. Layer mask (reveal all). (Layer Mask (Show all))
6. Black – White gradient overlay. (Overlap gradient from Black to White)

Now the body!

Do the same with the body.

Now it looks better.
Change the blending mode of the shape on the head and on the body.
Linear light (Linear light):

Looks better already.

The author transformed the hairstyle and imposed effects.

*Opacity 49%, Angle 156, Bias 2px, The size 1 pix.

Remember where the light comes from? Now, the same with the figure on the body.
And now is the time to kick.

Modernize the selection.

Create a new layer, fill it with a gradient and use the layer mask as shown earlier.
Overlay Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

*Opacity 47%, Angle 143, Bias 3px, The size 2px

You can still create something on your feet. Let’s practice in design.

*Layer Style – Shadow.

That’s how we did it.

Now, the same with the other leg.

*Inner shadow: Blend Mode Normal, Colour Gray, Angle 50, Bias 3px, The size 0 pix.

Final result.

The author gave this character a name.

And this is my character

Do not worry that you will not get something! Experiment and you will succeed. If anything, ask questions, I will try to answer.
