We draw a butterfly in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to use tools. PenTool (Pen), Gradient (Gradient), Brush (Brush) and transformations create a voluminous butterfly.

Final result:

Step 1. Create a new document size 1280x1024 pixels with white background color. Create a new layer, select the tool. PenTool (Pen) (contour mode) and draw the contour of the following form:

Click Ctrl+Enter To convert the created contour to the selected area, select the tool Gradient (Gradient), type – radial. In the gradient editor, set the following colors:

Draw a gradient from top to bottom, as shown in the screenshot.

We have the basis for the upper wing of the butterfly.

Step 2. Create a new layer, again using the tool. PenTool(Pen) create the next contour.

Take tool Gradient (Gradient), type – linear.

Draw a gradient from bottom to top.

Lower the Opacity of the layer to 50%, add a layer mask and erase the specified area.

Step 3. Create a new layer using the tool PenTool (Pen) Draw a few contours on the lower wing of the butterfly.
Stroke these outlines using a hard stroke. Brush (Brush) 3 pixel color ffadd6

Note translator. Adjust the brush settings in this way, switch to the tool PenTool (Pen), draw a contour, right click on it and select StrokePath (Outline the contour), specify the Brush tool for the stroke (Brush).

Change the blending mode of this layer to SoftLight (Soft Light), The opacity of the layer is 50%.

Step 4. Create a new layer using hard Brush (Brush) white in size 32 and 12 pixels draw spots at the bottom of the wing.

Step 5. New layer again, keep using tool PenTool (Pen), draw contour for the upper wing of the butterfly. Transform it into a selected area, fill it with a tool. Gradient (Gradient), type – linear.

Draw a gradient from left to right.

Step 6. New layer, again with the tool PenTool (Pen) create the next contour.

Transform it into a selected area, fill the area with a tool Gradient (Gradient), type is linear, then lower the Opacity of the layer to 80%. Apply filter Filter > Blur > GaussianBlur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 0.3 pixels. Add a layer mask using soft black Brush (Brush) erase the specified part.

Step 7. New layer using tool PenTool (Pen) draw the contour of the next shape on the upper wing, click Ctrl+Enter to convert it to selected area. Fill the area with a linear Gradient ( Gradient) with the parameters as in step 6, lower the Opacity of the layer to 40%.

Step 8. Create a new layer, draw with the tool PenTool (Pen) next contour, convert it to selected area. Fill this area with linear Gradient (Gradient) with the parameters again as in step 6.

Lower the Opacity of the layer to 60%.

Add a layer mask and erase the next part.

Step 9. New layer using tool PenTool (Pen) create the contour shown below, convert it to the selected area.

Fill the area with white (tool PaintBucketTool (Fill)), lower The opacity of the layer is up to 20%.

Step 10. Create a new layer, draw the next contour and convert it to a selection.

Fill the selected area with color fac7f5, Lower the Opacity of the layer to 20%. Add a layer mask and erase the bottom.

Step 11. New layer using soft white Brush (Brush), Opacity of the brush 60%; paint over the shape created in step 9.

Note translator. Place this layer above the layer created in step 9 and add a clipping mask to it.

Step 12. Create a new layer, take a soft Brush (Brush), color fee0f7, size 270 pixels, paint in the specified area of the upper wing.

Step 13. New layer, choose soft Brush (Brush), Colour f686d3, Opacity of the brush 40%, draw in the specified area.

Step 14. New layer using tool PenTool (Pen) create multiple contours.

Stroke these outlines using hard Brush (Brush) 3 pixels in size, color 9e0450. Change the layer blending mode to SoftLight, Opacity 80% layer.

Step 15. Create a new layer, draw circles on the upper wing using a hard Brush (Brush) 18 pixel color 9e0450. Change the layer blending mode to ColorBurn (Blackout basics) The opacity of the layer is 100%.

Step 16. New layer using hard white Brush (Brush) 12 and 18 pixels in size, draw white circles on the upper wing of the butterfly, lower the Opacity of the layer to 80%.

Step 17. Select on the layers palette all the layers with parts of the butterfly wings. Click Ctrl+G, to merge them into a group of layers. Click on the group with the right mouse button and select Duplicate Group. Flip a copy of the group horizontally – call Freetransform (Free Transformation) (Ctrl + T), right-click and select Flip horizontal (Flip horizontally).

Step 18. Now we will draw a butterfly’s head. Create a new layer, create a selection in the form of a circle in the middle between the wings of the butterfly, use the tool for this Elliptical MarqueeTool (Oval area). Fill the area Radial Gradient (Gradient) with the specified parameters.

Step 19. New layer, use tool Elliptical Marquee Tool (Oval area) to create a selection in the shape of a small circle (butterfly eye). Fill the area Radial Gradient (Gradient).

Duplicate this layer, flip horizontally, move to the opposite side of the head. We painted butterfly eyes.

Step 20. Create a new layer using the tool PenTool ( Pen) draw the outline in the shape of a smiling butterfly mouth, then stroke this outline using a hard Brush (Brush), Colour 71085a.

Step 21 Create a new layer using soft Brush (Brush), color 71085a, paint the spots on the butterfly’s cheeks, change the layer blending mode to SoftLight (Soft Light), The opacity of the layer is 100%.

Step 22 Draw a mustache butterfly. To do this, create a new layer using the tool PenTool (Pen) draw the outline of the desired shape.

Stroke the contour using hard Brush (Brush) 3 pixel color 71085a. Place this layer below the butterfly head layer.

Duplicate the mustache layer and flip horizontally, move the copy to the opposite side of the butterfly’s head.

Step 23 Create a new layer using hard Brush (Brush), color 71085a, draw the tips of the antennae of the butterfly.

Step 24 Create a new layer below the butterfly head layer. Create a selection area for the butterfly’s neck, as shown below.

Note translator. Use the tool PenTool (Pen) or Elliptical MarqueeTool (Oval area).

Fill the selected area with radial Gradient (Gradient) with the parameters as in step 19. So we drew the butterfly neck.

Step 25. Create a new layer using soft Brush (Brush), color 71085a, draw a shadow from the head.

Step 26. Create a new layer and place it below the neck layer. Using tool Elliptical MarqueeTool (Oval area) create a selection for the butterfly body, fill the selection with the color fd6fdd.

Step 27. Create a new layer below the neck layer. Using soft Brush (Brush), color 71085a, paint the shadow of the neck.

Step 28. Create a new layer, paint a bright highlight on top of the butterfly body, use soft white for this. Brush (Brush).

Step 29. New layer using soft Brush We draw a butterfly in Photoshop (Brush), Colour c814a1, paint along the edges of the body of the butterfly, change the layer blending mode to Soft Light, The opacity of the layer is 100%. So we add the effect of volume.

Step 30. Create a new layer, place it below the body layer. Using soft Brush (Brush), Colour 71085a, Opacity of the brush 40%, draw the shadows from the body of the butterfly falling on the wings.

Step 31 Create an adjustment layer Selectivecolor (Selective color correction).
Specify the following values on the tabs for the specified colors:
Reds (Red): -79, 40, 0, 0
Magentas (Purple): -63, -12, 20, 0
Whites (White): 0, 0, 0, 30

Finally, select all the layers with butterfly parts on the layers palette, click Ctrl+T to trigger the transformation and turn the butterfly.
