Hello, In this tutorial, I want to show you how easy it is to make a funny cartoon drawing! You only need an image of the grass texture, and the rest we will draw: a rainbow, the sky and clouds.
Step 1 – Creating a Rainbow
Create a new document with the size of 400×400 pixels.
There are many ways to draw a rainbow, for example, using the Pen Tool (Pen).
But we will use a different technique, a little easier:
1. With a tool Ellipse (Oval figure) draw a circle in red. Right click on the layer and select Blending options (Overlay options) Stroke (stroke) 1px in size in a light orange color.
2. Duplicate this layer (ctrl + j) – go to Edit – Transform Path – Scale (Editing – Transform contour – Zoom) and set the following settings: for 85% width and 85% height, change the color of this circle to orange
3. Duplicate this layer (ctrl + j), and repeat step 2 (scale again set to 85%) change the color of the circle to yellow
4. Do the same with the other layers. The colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. You should have something like this:
Now select all six layers and scale them (120% width and 140% height).
Now duplicate the layer with the purple circle (ctrl + j) and scale it (height 80%), fill it with white. Re-select all layers, right-click and select Merge layers (Merge layers).
Choose a tool Polygonal lasso (polygonal lasso) and remove the bottom of the rainbow.
To add contrast select tool Burn tool (Dimmer) and darken some areas on the rainbow. Then take the tool Dodge Tool (Clarifier) and add some light areas
Right click on the layer, select Blending options (Overlay settings) and make the following settings.
Now play with the opacity of the layer, I chose 85%, it turned out the following:
Step 2 – Creating the Background
Grass and sky will be our background.
Set the foreground color to # 3dc7ff and the background color to white.
Create a new layer under the rainbow layer and select Filter – Render – Clouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds). Name this layer sky
Using tool Pen tool (Pen) and draw a grass like the photo below. Place this layer between the Rainbow layer and the sky.
Grass color # 2f7b06.
Step 3 – Adding Grass Texture
Copy this beautiful grass texture from Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/). Place this texture above the grass layer. Now hold down the CTRL key and click on the sketch of the layer with the grass drawn. Go back to the texture layer and press CTRL + C and CTRL + V. Now you have the grass texture of the shape we need. Name this layer Grass Texture. Remove the photo with grass from Flickr. Change the opacity of the grass texture layer from 100% to 60%.
Step 4 – Upgrade the Rainbow – Door
Now we will make our rainbow funny. To do this, we will draw an open door and other things. Let’s get started!
Draw with Pen tool (Feather) simple door shape. Name this layer Shape door. Duplicate the layer with the door. (Ctrl + j), go to Edit – Transform Path – Flip Horizontal (Edit – Transform contour – Flip horizontally) and move this layer as in the image below. Name this layer as a layer called Door. Then go to Edit – Transform – Distort. (Editing – Transform – distortion).
Step 5 – Updating the Rainbow – Detailed Information
Now we will work with the Rainbow layer. Press CTRL and click on the thumbnail of the door shape layer, go back to the rainbow layer and press Delete. Now hide the layer with the shape of the door.
Set the base color to b065c2. Select Brush tool (Brush), size 19, 100% opacity and draw a purple area in the middle of the rainbow – see image.
Now go to Blending options (blending options) of the Rainbow layer and add a stroke, color # 201212.
Another detail is added using Eraser tool (Eraser), brush size 7, opacity 100%. Make small holes like the image below.
Now with the help Burn tool (Dimmer) make the colors of the rainbow more intense. (Exposure 8%). Take turns choosing midtones, shadows and highlights. Remember that midtones and shadows make the color more intense, darker, but with the same shade of red, for example. A backlight darkens the area, the color tone is not preserved.
Step 6 – Add Shadow to the Rainbow
Press CTRL and click on the thumbnail of the Rainbow layer. You see that the entire area of this layer has been selected. Create a new layer, call the Rainbow Shadow, take the tool Paint bucket tool (Fill) and fill the selected area with black. Navigate Edit – Transform – Flip Vertical. (Editing – Transforming – Flip Vertically) Move the shadow down, as in the image below, and go Edit – Transform – Skew. (edit – Transform – Tilt)
Blend mode of this layer put Soft light (Soft light), opacity 70% and you get a great shade.
Step 7 – Add Funny Clouds
Select the Custom Shape Tool and draw 4 funny clouds. We do not want to be identical, so we can change their shape using Pen tool (Pen) (as in any vector, you can add, delete, or move reference points), rotate the cloud, and scale it.
Select all 4 layers and merge them. (Ctrl + e)
The color of the clouds is white and for the merged layer I added a stroke, colors # 4a77ae.
Step 8 – Link the Rainbow and Clouds
Select Ellipse tool (Ellipse) and make six ellipses, as in the picture below. After that, turn them in different directions. It is important to choose a style for this form. Blank background, only edges.
Select all six layers and merge them. (ctrl + e)
Go back to the cloud layer and select the tool. Eraser tool (Eraser) size 12px, opacity 100% and erase parts of the cloud, so that the effect is as if the clouds and the rainbow are connected.
Now we have to remove, using the eraser, parts of the ellipses, as in the picture below.
Step 9 – Adding Door Texture
Screw onto the layer with the door. Set the foreground color to # c17e24 and the background color to # 663f0b. Go to Filter – Render – Fibers (Filter – Rendering – Fibers). Take the tool Burn tool (Dimmer), Highlights, Exposure 8% (Backlight, Exposure 8%) and darken some parts of the door. Go to Blending options (Overlay options) and add a stroke, color # 23290d, size 1.
Step 10 – Add Text on the Grass
Now I add text on the grass. The settings are shown below.
Right-click on the text layer and select Rasterize Text. Now go Edit – Transform – Distort (Editing – Transforming – Distortion)
Now we go to Blending options (Overlay options) add Bevel and Emboss (Embossed) with settings:
Also add a stroke with the settings:
Now change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light) 100% opacity. Your result should look something like this:
Step 11 – Adding a Funny Cartoon Character
Browsing the Internet, I found a good set with vector shapes. This is the character I will use. As you can see, it does not have color, and therefore does not match with my image. But with Photoshop it is easy to fix.
Duplicate the cartoon character (Ctrl + j) and name it Character Shadow. Create a new layer below it, press the CTRL key and click on the layer with the shadow. Go back to the newly created layer and use the tool Paint bucket tool (Fill) Fill the selection with black.
Now go to Edit – Transform – Flip Vertical (Editing – Transforming – Flip Vertically) Move it down and place this layer under the layer with our little man.
Now go to Edit – Transform – Distort (Editing – Transforming – Distortion)
Blending mode of this layer set Soft light (Soft light) and opacity 73%.
Step 12 – Coloring the Funny Man
This is very easy to do. Just create a new layer above the character layer, take Brush tool (Brush) size 9, opacity 100%, and color the little man.
Skin color # ffe5a5; shirt # fcb9dd; pants # 0f7a8a; shoes # b96e1d. Use Burn tool(Dimmer) to give depth to the character.
Now change the blending mode of this layer to Multiply (Multiplication) and opacity 100%.
Step 13 – Final Details
For this step, create a new layer on top of all the others. Navigate Image – Apply Image (Image – Outer channel) You will see that the new layer contains all the visible merged layers. This step is completely up to you, your imagination and your taste. Experiment with brightener, dimmer and other tools.
Here is the final image:
I hope you enjoyed the lesson.
