We draw a lady’s fan in Photoshop

Hello! I want to share experiences and talk about how to draw a fan of women in oriental style.

So, let’s begin.

Create a 1000x850pix document.

Make visible rulers (ViewRulers) and expose the guides so that the vertical line halves the sheet and the horizontal one is slightly shifted down. This is the center of our work.

Create a new layer, call it “Wand” and draw a rectangular selection (RectangularMarqueeTool) size 520×10pix (see 1 in the figure). Fill the selection with black. Remove selection (Ctrl+D).

Turn the wand (EditFreeTransform) on (-130), placing it as in the figure (see point 2). The center of rotation must be placed at the intersection of the guides.
Go to the layer style, select Emboss (LayerLayerStyleBevelandEmboss). Settings, see the screenshot.

Copy the layer “Wand” and turn on (-1500) by setting the center of rotation to the same place. And a new layer – you need to move under layer “Wand”.
Go back to the layer “Wand”, copy it again and turn it over to (-17.50). Remember the location of the center of rotation. A copy is placed between two existing layers.

Then another copy … turn, but already on (-160). Next, perform turns with the same angle (-160). Each next wand should be under the previous one. Do not forget about the center of rotation.

More more….
As a result, there are a lot of layers, so select them and group them (LayerGroupLayers). And let’s just call “Sticks” J

The wooden frame of our fan is ready. Let’s go further …
Start drawing the most beautiful part. First do the base with the Pen tool (Pen).
Create a new layer, call it “The foundation”.
Draw a shape in the form of a fan Pen (Pen). The boundaries of the figure should go beyond the sticks. Make a selection (button Loadpathasaselectionin the Outlines panel Paths) and fill with color #e8483c.

Reduce the transparency of the layer “The foundation”.
Selecting the Polygonal Lasso tool (PolygonalLassoTool). In the property panel of the tool, click on the button Addtoselection and create the selection shown in the figure.

It is more convenient to start each triangle from the intersection point of the guides, which we have already used more than once. It is important that the selection goes beyond the fundamentals.
Save selection Layer – Save (SelectSaveSelection). You can assign a name to the selection, and you can save it just like that. The name will automatically be assigned. Alpha one. Remove selection Ctrl+D.

Choose the Ellipse tool (ElipseTool). Create a shape by holding Shift+ Alt, having a center at the intersection of the guides. Create a selection (button Loadpathasaselectionin the Outlines panel Paths).
Being on a layer “The foundation”, push Delete. Here is the result of our manipulations.

Remove selection Ctrl+D. Return 100% opacity to layer.
Next, you need to create a new layer.
Click on the layer window “The foundation”, with pressed Ctrl– get it a selection.
Fill the selection with color #fdeeed on a new layer. Remove selection Ctrl+D.

Create a selection in the shape of an ellipse. (ElipticalMarqueeTool) so that the center is at the intersection of the guides, and the size is less than half of the fan base.

Go to quick mask mode (EditinQuickMaskMode), then we carry out Gaussian blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) with a radius 40pix.
Exit the quick mask mode (EditinStandartMode), invert the selection (SelewithtInverse), click Delete.
Copy the layer to make the white inset brighter. Merge two new layers with a layer “The foundation”. Name leave too – “The foundation”.

Next, work with the Brush tool. (BrushTool). Brushes can download here. Or choose a drop-like paint.
Create a new layer and draw paint drops. Colour # d29b23. The layer is called “Drops”.

Being on a layer “Drops”, click on the layer icon “The foundation”, with pressed Ctrl– we get a selection of this layer.
Invert selection (SelewithtInverse), click Delete. Take off Ctrl+D.
Next, load the saved selection (Select-load selectionAlpha one).

Now we will give volume to the fan and golden glitter to the drops.
Selecting the dimmer tool (BurnTool) with settings:

And shade the layers “The foundation” and “Drops”, as in the figure (step 1).

We process these layers separately because each requires its own degree of darkening.
In the process, you can replaceRange to shade the light (Highligtts) with an exposure (Exposure) 15%
Invert selection (SelewithtInverse) and work on …
Little smiley to keep the spirit … J … shade the following areas (step 2).

Without removing the selection, we begin the clarification using the Clarifier tool. (DodgeTool). We work the same way on two layers: “The foundation” and “Drops”. You can use the settings shown in the screenshot (step 3).

Invert the selection again and lighten the following regions (step 4).

Deselect Ctrl+Dand look with a “fresh look” – maybe somewhere, something needs to be corrected and do not delay, do it! J
On his fan, to layer “Drops” I applied the following settings: Image – Correction – Hue / saturation (Image – Adjustment -Hue / Saturation ) with values Saturation (-40) and Brightness / Contrast ( Image – Adjustment -Brightness / Contrast ) with values Contrast (+45).
Merge layers “The foundation” and “Drops”Ctrl+E.
Open the folder “Sticks” and place the Base so that the right wand is on top.

Using Pen Tools (Pen) and (DirectSelectionTool) and draw just such a ladder. For this it is more convenient to reduce the transparency of the Basics. The sticks should remain inside the contour. When correcting points, maximize images for easy operation.

Being on a layer “The foundation”, create a selection (button Loadpathasaselectionin the Outlines panel Paths), invert it (SelewithtInverse), and click Delete.
Begin to create fan shadows.
Create a new layer with the name “The shadow of the basics.”
Click on the layer icon “The foundation”, with pressed Ctrl– get it a selection.
On the layer “Shadow of the Basics” fill the selection with black. With the help of Free Transformation (EditFreeTransform), we achieve the location of the shadow, as in the figure.
Then apply a Gaussian blur filter (FilterBlur– Gaussian blur) with the value – 6pix. Blend Mode – Multiply (Multiply), opacity (Opaticy) – 60%

Draw the shadows from the fan sticks.
Here is not so simple. The rods in the fan are one above the other and their shadows on the surface look different (objects are at different heights from the surface). We will try to create this effect.

Option 1: create a shadow from each stick, blur it, change the transparency, according to its position.

Option 2: Make a copy of the group “Sticks”, remove from there the layers with the base and the shadow of the fan, merge all the layers in the group (LayerMergeGroup).
Click on the layer icon “Sticks” with pressed Ctrl, to get a selection of this layer.
Delete layer “Sticks” – we no longer need it.
Create a new layer named “Shadow of sticks” and put it under a layer “The foundation”. Then fill the selection with black.
And here the most difficult – with the help of the Deformation (EditTransformWarp) it is necessary to achieve the location of the shadow as shown.
I used the second option. In the screenshot, I reduced the layer transparency “Shadow of sticks”, to be seen better.

Apply Gaussian blur filter (FilterBlur– Gaussian blur) with the value – onepix, set the opacity (Opaticy) – 50%
Next, increase the blur (using the tool BlurTool) and transparency (using the Eraser EraserTool) for the shadow from each wand, in the direction indicated by the arrow.
After that, remove the guides (ViewClearGuides).
That’s what happened.

Let’s underline the faces of the fan.
Using Pen Tools (Pen) and (DirectSelectionTool) draw a contour on the edges of the base. In the properties panel of the tool, press the button Addtopatharea. During operation, the image is better to enlarge.

Create a new layer above “Basis“.
Customize the Brush tool: color – # ba413c, brush diameter 3pix stiffness (Hardness) – 100%
Run the command to add a stroke (Strokepathwithbrush) by clicking the corresponding button in the Outlines panel (Paths).
Set the blending mode Multiplication (Multiply), opacity (Opaticy) – thirty% Remove the protruding parts and reduce the transparency of the faces on the light part of the Foundation with the Eraser (EaserTool).

Merge fan layers.
That’s the end !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done, right? But the result is worth it!
To my work I added a background, and a lace with tassels. How to draw a lace you will learn by studying this lesson.

And these are two more fans, as an example.

Good luck to all!
