We draw an address book icon in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to create a simple address book icon.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and press Ctrl + N to create a new document. Enter the parameters listed below and click OK.

Then activate the grid View – Show – Grid (View – Show – Grid) and Snap to Grid View – Snap To – Grid (View – Snap To – Grid). First we need a grid with 5 pixel cells, so go Edit – Preferences – Guides, Grid Slices (Editing – Settings – Guides, Grid, and Fragments). In the Gridline Every (Line through each) we enter 5, and in Subdivision (Internal division by) – 1. Set the grid color to # a7a7a7. When finished, click OK.

The grid will simplify your work with small elements. In addition, it can always be turned off with the Ctrl + “key combination. We also need the Info panel. Open it Window – Info (Window – Information).

Step 2

Choose color # ffde17, take Rounded rectangle tool (U) (Rounded Rectangle), on the tool parameter panel, set the Radius to 3 px. Go to the working canvas and create a vector rectangle with a size of 70 x 95 px.

Step 3

Select the layer with the yellow rectangle and activate the tool. Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle). Hold Alt and create a rectangle with a size of 45 x 95 px.
Make sure that the yellow rectangle is highlighted, and activate Rounded rectangle tool (U) (Rounded Rectangle). Hold down the key Shift and create a 15 x 25 px rectangle. Move to the layers panel and rename the current layer to “pageOne”.

Step 4

We continue to work with the “pageOne” figure and change its color to # f3e7cf. Go to the layers panel and double-click on the layer with the folder to open the Layer Style window. Apply Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

Step 5

Activate the “pageOne” layer and duplicate it (Ctrl + J).
Click the right mouse button on the copy and select Clear layer style (Clear layer style). Reduce the Fill of the layer to 0%. Apply layer styles to the copy as shown below.

Step 6

Create a new copy of “pageOne” (Ctrl + J). Select it, drag it to the front (Shift + Ctrl +]), then clear the layer of the layer styles. Reduce the Fill of the layer to 0% and apply layer styles.

Step 7

Set the color to # 0070be, take Rounded rectangle tool (U) (Rounded Rectangle), create a 15 x 25 pixel rectangle and arrange it as shown below.

Make sure the blue rectangle is active, and activate Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle). Hold Alt and create a 5 x 25 pixel rectangle, as shown in the second image below. Double click on the name of the layer on the layers panel and rename it to “page two”.

Step 8

We continue to work with “pageTwo” and replace its color with # f3e7cf. Apply layer styles.

Step 9

Duplicate “pageTwo” (Ctrl + J) and delete the layer styles from the copy. Reduce the Fill of the layer to 0% and apply layer styles.

Step 10

Duplicate “pageTwo” again (Ctrl + J) and delete the layer styles from the copy. Reduce the Fill of the layer to 0% and apply layer styles.

Step 11

Set the color to # 39b54a, take Rounded rectangle tool (U) (Rounded Rectangle), create a 15 x 25 pixel shape and place it as shown below.

Make sure the green rectangle is highlighted and activate. Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle). Hold Alt and create a 5 x 25 pixel rectangle, as shown below. Double click on the name of the layer and rename it to “pageThree”.

Step 12

We continue to work with “pageThree” and change its color to # f3e7cf. Apply layer styles.

Step 13

Duplicate “pageThree” (Ctrl + J) and clear the copy layer styles. Reduce the Fill of the copy to 0%. Apply layer styles.

Step 14

Once again, duplicate “pageThree” and clear the copy layer styles. Reduce the Fill of the duplicate to 0%. Apply layer styles.

Step 15

Using Pen tool (P) (Pen), create a line 25 pixels long and place it as shown below. Make sure the line is active, and go to the top panel. The Fill parameter should be inactive, for the stroke set the color to # 1b2937 and the size to 1 pt. Go to the layers panel, make sure that the line is still active, reduce the opacity to 50%.

Step 16

Duplicate the horizontal line (Ctrl + J). Place all copies as shown below. Select all the horizontal lines and press Ctrl + G to group them. Reduce the opacity of the whole group to 70% and change its blend mode to Color burn (Blackout basics).

Step 17

Set the color to # f26522, take Rounded rectangle tool (U) (Rounded Rectangle), create a shape measuring 50 x 95 pixels and place it as shown below.

Activate Direct selection tool (A) (Partial selection). Select the right upper nodules and pull them up by 10 pixels, then pull down the right lower nodes by 10 pixels.

Rename the layer with the orange shape to “cover”.

Step 18

Apply layer styles to the “cover” layer.

Step 19

Duplicate the “cover” layer (Ctrl + J). Clear copy from layer styles. Reduce the Fill of the copy to 0%. Apply layer styles.

Step 20

For further work, we need a grid of 1 pixel, so go Edit – Preferences – Guides, Grid Slices (Editing – Settings – Guides, Grid, and Fragments) and in Gridline every (Line every) enter 1.

Select color # c69c6d, activate Rectangle tool (U) (Rectangle), create a 1 x 1 pixel shape and place it as shown below. Duplicate the shape (Ctrl + J) to create the letter “A”. Then create the letter “G”.

Step 21

Create four more letters. The letter size should not exceed 3 pixels in width and 4 in height.

Step 22

On the layers panel, select all layers with a small square, click on them with the right mouse button and select Merge shapes (Combine shapes). Apply layer styles.

Step 23

Press Shift + Ctrl + Alt + N to create a new layer, select it and send it to the background (Shift + Ctrl + [). Take Paint bucket tool ( G) (Fill), select the color # c7b29a and fill it with the working canvas. Apply layer style Inner glow (Internal glow) to a new layer.

Step 24

Click the right button on the layer created in the previous step and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object). Apply filter to smart object Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter – Noise – Add noise). Enter the parameters shown below and click OK.

Step 25

Select all the layers with the address book and duplicate them (Ctrl + J). Select the copies and convert them into a smart object. Reduce the Fill of the last smart object and apply the parameters shown below. Rename the smart object to “shadow”.

Step 26

Duplicate the “shadow” smart object (Ctrl + J). Customize the copy layer styles.

Step 27

Duplicate the shadow object again (Ctrl + J). Open the layer styles window and customize them.
